A few days before he died we heard about his new album being released on his birthday. My older daughter, who had just turned 13, said, "I've GOT to get that album!" I knew she liked him; I didn't know how much. It killed me to tell her when I heard the news; she was gutted. She still has a black star on her violin in tribute.

everyone's talking about labyrinth, but merry christmas mr lawrence is, in my opinion, one of the best films ever made, no only was bowie's performance breathtaking, the soundtrack, the other actors, the script, and the setting were perfect, and the film really deserves more recognition. for me, watching the film marked the ending of my childhood. also, bowie's character was from south africa, not new zealand.
@tootsiebellevue1298

Yes I agree it deserves more recognition, maybe a re-release at the movies. Having watched this on the big screen as a Bowie fan was such a memorable experience, his portrayal was quite stunning and made me realise that not only was he breathtakingly handsome but was also an incredible actor as well as a music legend. I recently found the Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence soundtrack in an op-shop for just $1, I had forgotten just how beautiful it really was.

@magnuskallas
@magnuskallas Жыл бұрын
Talking of The Prestige... With all respect, I have a bad feeling the writers of this piece didn't truly study Bowie. For instance, The Hunger (1983) didn't happen "a few years" after Thin White Duke / Station to Station (1976) era. And Bowie was essentially playing an inventor in The Man Who Fell To Earth (1976), combining Thin White Duke with Thomas Newton's character and vice versa. Heck, Station to Station album art is taken straight from the film. And the next album, Low (1977) again used a shot from the film. In that light, Bowie playing Tesla was rather an obvious casting choice.

A great list that's provided me with some new films to look for to enjoy some awesome David Bowie performances! Thanks Watchmojo! Honestly though, I was thrown for a loo with Nicolas Tesla, I had NO idea that was David! Aside from his very good performance, his makeup and clothing were just perfect you can say, though I'm sure his closest fans caught sight of him quickly, I had no clue it was him in that role.

Thank Mojo for this fanatic video (like always) as Bowie has been a true inspiration and my beloved hero. I've loved him, his music and his movies since I was 10 (now I'm 18) falling in with my hero with his performance in Labyrinth. I agree with several others who have commented saying how brilliant The Man Who Fell To Earth is' and it's quite a master piece and one of his very best; but as Labyrinth is what has brought me into the world of Bowie madness for me I would have chosen it as the performance for the number one spot and then The Man Who Fell To Earth as number two.

I wasn't surprised that David Bowie was cast as Andy Warhol. He actually knew the man and even had a song on Hunky Dory about him. And I'm fine with Thomas Jerome Newton being the #1 slot. My parents talked about "The Man Who Fell to Earth" incessantly. It was an image from that film that was used for the album art on "Low." "Labyrinth" may be the Bowie film I hold dearest to my heart because of my age, but I am content with "The Man Who Fell to Earth" being regarded as his best role. He was always amazing at being the Other.
