I Wonder Why-Dion and The Belmonts There are some more but those are the basic songs I like nad love. By the way, Tonite Tonite by The Melokings is my favorite. It's just that I forgot to put it at number 1 and was too lazy to fix it, and no, It's not a typo, it's how it's spelled in the song. Actually come to think of it, it might be a 60's song, but I'm not sure. I'll include it on the list in the 60's video.

An underrated song that was popular in the 50s in my opinion that I found from looking at Billboard Hot 100 #1 hits is Santo and Johnny's Sleepwalk from 1959 which rarely seems to get mentioned in lists of 50's songs for some reason. Definitely sounds ahead of its time. Otherwise not a bad list . Also there is an older video for Mack the Knife.

What? No Doo-wops? No Frank Sinatra? No Bebop or Cool Jazz? No popular standards? Maybe nobody on Mojo was living in the USA in the 1950s. It's a good list but mostly confined to one musical style,except for Darin and Cash. It was a great innovative decade for many types of music,and the technology:45s,LPs,and vinyl stereo would dominate for a few decades.

Jailhouse Rock (By far the Heaviest Song of the 50’s and another note, - Elvis started recording in 1953 and his Rockabilly Style started in 1954) 2. Johnnie B Goode (The piano player for C.Berry says that he was the true writer of this song...) 3. Heartbreak Hotel (Elvis again-Nothing ever sounded like this tune at the time) 4. Hound Dog (Elvis’ idea for this tune was so explosive and set the rock n roll phenomenon) 5. Don’t Be a Cruel (Yes Elvis again-Most artists of that period claim this as there favourite tune) 6. Fun fact: Rock Around The Clock was used in Blackboard Jungle, a movie meant to make sure kids were respectful and didn't become delinquents. They used the song to say that this is what will make your kids bad, and the song became an instant hit from that. Kids couldn't get enough. Had they not used it, it wouldn't be nearly as well known as it is/was.

Neon Roses Yep, Frankie had huge hits in the 50s and so did Rosemary Clooney, Pat Boone etc, all of which would certainly qualify as 'defining' music of the 50s. Also there was the most influential country singer/songwriter of all time - Hank Williams. The 50s wasn't all about Rock & Roll, just the same as the 70s was certainly not all about Punk or the 60s all about hippies or The Beatles.

Impossible task to select the most important rock songs of the 50s, but I don't have a problem with ANY of these, and think they are a good cross-section. I lived those days as a young kid with limited radio exposure to these hits way up in Canada where song-play was VERY selective by lots of old fogey station managers. Congrats! Will subscribe!

The 1950s were a great deal more varied in music than you indicate. Looking at top ten songs of each year, two artists have six: Perry Como and Elvis Presley. Those with three are Eddie Fisher, Les Baxter, Pat Boone, Patti Page, and Rosemary Clooney. With two are Bobby Darin, Dean Martin, Doris Day, Gary Crosby & Bing Crosby, Jo Stafford, Kay Starr, Mario Lanza, Nat King Cole, Percy Faith, Perez Prado, Sammy Kaye, Teresa Brewer, The Fleetwoods, The Four Aces, The Weavers, and Tony Bennett. I have to also include two very popular pieces of music that influenced me greatly: Beethoven Symphony No. 5, Arturo Toscanini conducting the NBC Symphony Orchestra, radio broadcast of 1951 (I heard it live then); and Dave Brubeck, Take Five, 1959. The 1950s were also a scary time for some, with nuclear war considered imminent and racism widespread and common, not just against African-Americans either.

Those eras had a lot of singles, I agree, but the names were so out there, it's really hard to find them.

There's probably too little video footage of artists before that decade. Also, before the 50's people weren't as concerned with music as they were with, let's say... the world wars and everything in between...

The 1950s are a nice decade for songs. But I think the 1960s - 1980s are the best decades when it comes to music. :)

To me, Elvis is #1. He revolutionized rock n roll with his voice, attitude, songs, dance moves, movies, and Jailhouse Rock was only one of many of his hit songs in the decade. He defined the decade, not just songs.

Jerry lee Lewis, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, Johnny Cash and Elvis are the most amazing musicians to date. Jerry’s piano skills are impeccable. Eddies twangy guitar and rebellious rockabilly mix of country and rock is extraordinary. Buddy’s smooth voice and amazing singing and guitar playing ability is the work of a genius. Gene was not the most famous star but his attitude and incredibly rebellious music will go down in history. Johnnys country talents are infamous and eternally incredible. Elvis was the King and has yet to be topped in popularity and talent to this day.
