The WORST departure from the book was Jamie not crying over the photographs of Brianna and then immediately telling Claire about his son, William. Completely destroyed the sense of despair he had endured over their time apart and dismissed Brianna in favour of his son.

it also helps create a bit of a conflict later on Voyager when Claire finds out from John Grey, and she is very jealous of him.

I'm one of those show fans who hasn't read the books, I'm glad the video allowed us to read the Brianna-photos passage, which is beautifully written and far more emotional than it was in the show. BTW being a printer by trade at that point, Jamie would have great technical interest in how those were printed, it being far beyond 18th century capabilities, literally inconceivable to him. To Claire and to us they're just photos, to Jamie they would be astounding.

Sandra, I felt the same at first until I saw, when reading the books, one of the chapter headings that read, and I quote "THE deepest feeling always shows itself in silence". But you are right about the son part, they should have left it where it was in the book, later on. They didn't spend enough time on Brianna. Im pissed about the whole son scenario anyway. I wonder what Claire really thought about him having a son, they only talked about the blackmail part. And that was the most rediculous thing I ever heard. Never did understand what the actual blackmail was, and he spent the whole night with her??? Yea right. MURTAGH! I don't think he's dead, and haven't the faintest idea why I think that. Do women have gut feelings? Also never did like the gay storyline either. Willie is growing up to look exactly like Jamie, what then. Just wished Lord John had picked someone besides Jamie. I'm sorry but everytime he's around Jamie it gives me the creeps the way he looks at him for everyone to see, especially when Claires not around.He better watch that when Willie's around, he's growing up too.Dont get me wrong, I have no problem with gays " to each their own" just not Jamie.

I very much agree with this statement especially. Jamie should have shown more joy for having Claire back than what was shown in the show. Completely ruined the reunion for me. Especially bringing William into the picture so early. Bringing in his "infidelity" sort of with Geneva Dunsaney. I understand the need to shorten the script too, but that's going too far as far as I'm concerned.

One of the scenes from the books that made me really sad that the left out in the show was the reunion betwee Claire and Fergus, it was a really emotional moment in the books and in the show it was basically "Oh, you're not dead. Cool."

When I read that part in the book I felt like it wasn't that big of a moment and then Claire and Fergus don't meet again for ages and when they are in the same scene together again he isn't portrayed as excited to see her or anything. I'm literally up to that bit in the books at the moment. I was pretty underwhelmed by their reunion in the books.

@@lindatimmons3675 Eh, he's a douche in the show as well. He should have divorced Claire if he didn't want to be with her any more. He told her she had to let go of the past, yet he was allowed to go out fucking other women because she didn't love him any more? It would have saved them both so much time had he just divorced her. Then, after Bree turns 18, he basically threatens to take her away from her mom, despite him not being her actual dad? He was a dick.

In the show, the only thing that pissed me off about Frank was that when Claire offered him a divorce (after finding out about his girlfriend) he didn’t want one because he claimed that Claire would take Bree away from him... but when *he* asked for the divorce 15 years later, taking Bree away was exactly what he was going to do!

He had his affairs, married status, job & "family." Narcissists will use somone untill they no longer suit their needs. He even lied to his mistress about Claire not wanting a divorce for years to avoid leaving & losing everything... If he truly loved Bree, he would have told her the truth. About the Divorce, the move, the girlfriend & an offer to live with them. I don't remember Bree even meeting the girlfriend..Do we really think she would be keen on sharing a home with him & Bree? I think what people are refusing to consider is that the level of detail in the books can never be equaled on film/TV simply because it would lengthen the show so much as to be unreasonable and expensive to produce, as much as we all would like to see the books recreated 100% faithfully. It's just not feasible. You need to enjoy the books for what they are - which is phenomenal, of course, and enjoy the show for what it offers, and leave it there.

These clips were departures from the book as opposed to leaving story lines out. Yes, most readers do get that you can't put everything into the show. It's when things are twisted around that fans are more likely to be agitated.
@Buffy8Fan
@Buffy8Fan 4 жыл бұрын
@@magpiegirl3783 And I get that also, but being a purist when stories go from one medium to another is illogical as there can be numerous factors from money to actors not being available to writing decisions to network interference and so on that cannot be avoided involved with why the changes are made (As an example what are fans going to do now when Laura Donnelly starts to do her new HBO show and will it affect her role as Jenny on Outlander). From the perspective your talking about its amazing how many people should of hated GoT by the time S3 started. With all that and more it seems odd to complain about the changes to the point of threatening not watching, as some have.

Lisa T. Diana Gabaldon is getting paid by the production. It’s in her best financial interest to give them her blessings or to at least publicly pretend to be. One of the differences that was huge for me was the return of Roger after being rescued from the Mohawk. In the TV Show, everyone is happy and it seems to be no problems with that but in the books, Bree takes a lot of time to accept what he did and he has to stay away from here until she decided that she forgave him. Anyway, it ended up well but still, this is important for their relationship! And of course, letting Murtagh alive in the TV show was very strange !!

Honestly that doesn't bug me as much as them breaking up in the 1960s and him still following her to the 1700s. That INFURIATED me so much more. I really liked in the books the letter she sent him when she was supposed to be visiting that tipped him off she went and did that. Instead of being super fairly pissed at him for interfering with her life like that, she's both happy to see him and mad because "what if we can't go back now I didn't intend to stay damnit Roger!" and its way more believable that they're willing to get married in the books compared to just how mean they were to each other in the show. Compared to that, everybody being chill with him needing a couple of days to decompress after all the unexpected trauma and process both his unexpected fatherhood and the fact that he is a lil to blame for Bree being hurt like that, is pretty understandable. Especially since he spent the last 9 months under the impression that Bree did this to him on purpose coz he kept her parents death a secret. Also, my two favorite moments of Season 4 are when Jamie just beats the actual hell out of him when he shows up on the Ridge like "heeeeyyy, I finally found it. How's my wife doin?" it's so deeply satisfying in a tragically funny kinda way. And the second is later when Jamie comes to get him and is like "so uh, this is a huge 'my bad' situation and I was absolutely mistaken when I did this and sent you here and my daughter's BIG MAD at me about it coz...well yeah" and Roger just collapses like "oh thank Christ I didn't think I'd fucked up *this bad* or that I'd fall in love with someone who would respond like this." is pretty well acted too.

TV series cuts so much of Lord John! Some of the changes have been good. I'm glad they made Mr Willoughby less cartoonish for example. But I too felt they dropped the ball with Claire and Jaime's reunion. Same with Fergus meeting Claire again. Something between the book and what we got would have been better. I think they also screwed up a bit with Bree. I like Sophie Skelton, so it's nothing against her. Dropping the whole lizzie with Pneumonia arc and having Bree collapse near Laoghaire's home both served to undercut just how capable Bree had been in getting to the colonies in the book.

I was waiting for someone to mentions Willoughby, I thought that was one of the best changes. I like him in the book because he is such a mixed bag, providing considerable challenge and inconvenience but also some good fortune and skill. Knowing that they won't have time for all of the detail in the show, I'm glad they didn't overstretch themselves trying to show him as an irresponsible drunk and have that be the takeaway from the only Asian character in the series. I agree about the reunions too, but I haven't seen all the show seasons yet.

Just 10? I have 30 written down just off the top of my head. Aside from one episode, the story IS told from Claire’s POV. These are not chronological. : Tamis Baxter does not exist in the books and that screen time would have been far better spent on Claire helping Losgann deliver a foal, an act that led to Colum giving Claire a jet rosary that Jamie subsequently used to save Claire at the witch trial. On the show Willie remembers Mac the groom. In the show Jamie knows the part Loaghaire played in almost getting Claire burned as a witch. In the book, Claire saves Jamie’s hand at Eldridge Manor with the help of Macrannoch, awake, with Jamie’s sense of humour in full display, and Jamie removes the signet ring brand the JACK put on him, not something Jamie did to himself. Murtagh, Jamie and Claire escape to the coast where they boarded the Cristabol to go to the abbey run by Jamie’s uncle Alexander. Jamie develops a terrible fever and very much wants to die. Claire once again saves him, using opium, the smell of lavender (Jack’s favorite sent), a knife , and, as Jamie describes it later as “fornication of his demons”. They spends weeks at the abbey. And Jamie always believed Faith was conceived the first time they were intimate without the dark cloud of Jack. In the book Jamie is not arrested by redcoats, but by the Watch, having been betrayed by Ronnie MacNab, who was subsequently murdered by the other men of Lallybroch. The Watch were never invited guests at Lallybroch and we only see Horrocks the one time. Neither Claire (who would not have a clue how to find where Sandringham is staying) nor Jamie and Murtagh visit Sandringham, there is so dual, Jamie isn’t in a fight with the MacDonalds, amd isn’t banished from Leogh, anymore than Dougal is. While at sea I search of the Bruja and it’s important cargo (a kidnapped Ian), the Artemis is boarded by the Bruja, and Claire is seriously injured, not some scratch from a tree, but a slash “from oxter to elbow”, Yi Tien Cho puts 42 stitches in Claire’s arm using the acupuncture needles to dull the pain. They end up with a black slave who they rescued from the ocean who had seen Ian on the Bruja. In the Mohawk village to rescue Roger, Ian doesn’t just choose to stay for no reason, he has met Mohawk woman (Works With Her Hands, who Ian calls Emily) and wants to stay because he loves her. Somehow the show writers have forgotten Brianna is an MIT engineer and reduce her to little more than a breast for Jemmy. Roger, who was the youngest professor at Oxford at the time he travelled is painted in the show as some idiot. The eye exam Claire gives him (with a reading chart done in Shakespeare lines instead of random letters) proves that Roger has a perfectly logical, medical reason he shoots so badly, and Claire tells him he can tell the sharp shooters that he (has the eyes of a hawk, as hawks have the same kind of vision. At NO point, until the birth of Amanda does Roger EVER want to return to the future. Jamie asks him on a number or occasions and her ensure all concerned he wants to stand by Jamie’s hand. The show wasted 3 gemstones that will desperately needed after Amanda is born. The ridiculousness of Jamie fighting a Indian dressed as a bear, instead of what ACTUALLY happened, which is he fights a live bear. And all the stuff with the Natives at the beginning of the season is all in the show writers imaginations, none of that happened in the book. Nor was the Mueller family murdered by the Natives. The hernia repair happens to John Quincy Myers on Jocasta’s dining table, not at the theatre, and certainly not in the presence of George Washington who Jamie and Claire do not meet until book 8. The amount of money Geiliss had stolen from Arther was 10,000 pounds sterling not 1,000. The amount agreed upon to pay Laoghaire? 1200 pounds sterling, not 20. And Claire doesn’t get her beautiful Highland wedding ring until they return to Leoch. Is that 10?

In the books, which I just started after the season 5 finale, I am now just starting book 6, I like the communication. The communication between Jenny and her knowing more about her son. Really irritated that they left out the letter from Ian Sr. to Jaimie about keeping Ian in the colonies. It was so heartwarming to know that as scary as it must sound to Ian Sr, he knows his son well enough to know it's the only place that can provide him opportunities. Even if it means he likely will never see him again. On the show, it kind of feels like from Jenny's POV, they just absconded with her son and they rarely touch base again. She is so much more of a character in the books. They all are, that's why I decided to finally read them.

Yeah, I totally agree. Caitriona has been pretty vocal about how Claire wouldn't be with Frank if he was a total wanker, which I agree with. Also there is such a tendency in storytelling to villainize the man you don't want a character to be with. But in the real world, it usually doesn't work that way. The guy you wanna leave is usually a nice guy, and that's why it's a hard decision. I think making Frank more likeable is more true to real life.

I've read the books but my parents haven't. I had to explain how much of an _absolute asshole_ Frank is in the books compared to the show, and conversely how much more unlikable and unreasonable Roger is in the show compared to the books. That and I'm still mad at the omission of "My god, you're huge!" / "Well whose fault do you think that is??!" when Bree and Jamie first meet. I wish the confrontation between Bree and Laoghaire would have happened at Lollybroch right in front of Jenny and Ian the way it did in the books. I was also SO hoping for the birth of Bree's son to be like it was in the books. Poor Jamie was so out of sorts trying to comfort her! Reading Jamie and Claire's parting at the stones in Dragonfly in Amber was the first time I ever legitimately _cried_ reading a book. I was practically bawling.

Book Frank was vocally anti-adoption when he and Claire had trouble conceiving before she "traveled", for Claire that really stung. But he did a 180 in the books and adored Bree at first sight. I don't think he knew for sure about his own infertility until years later. Another book thing was the Frank/Claire age gap. In Voyager Claire mentions him being in his late 40s when Bree's 3 months old, so Claire's just 30-31. Claire married Frank at 18-he was a professor where her great-uncle was head of the dept. IIRC, Claire wasn't Frank's student, but that's how they met. Never hated Book Frank but he was very much a guy born in 1901 or so. Even without the time travel, IMO Claire/Frank would've grown apart, before she "traveled" she had moments of chafing at being the demure professor's wife type. I preferred the book's take on their relationship, both before Claire traveled and after her return. The marriage was strained but very much real, they still shared a bed and Claire spent years being suspicious about Frank hooking up with various younger women at the university. Echoes of how Claire/Frank met, plus Claire cheated with Jamie, and Frank could always tell how much more she loved Jamie than him.
@jjdrama

I don't remember Frank being particularly unlikable in the book, I think your 'guy born in 1901' sounds accurate. To me, the fact that he loved Brianna is the most defining aspect of his character. Her wanting to study history to be like him also speaks volumes about the kind of father he was. Finally, he may not have been enthusiastic about his wife becoming a doctor in the 1950s, but it simply would not have been an option for a woman married to an intractable husband. To be born at the turn of the century and help in child-rearing so your wife can become a doctor? That's pretty damn good if you ask me.

Not only Jamie and Laoghaire’s wedding didn’t last (🎉🎉)...it was never valid in the first place - because Claire didn’t die, which means that by marrying Laoghaire Jamie committed bigamy which makes his marriage to the bi*ch automatically invalid. I think the tv show made Frank that way in order to emphasize the difference between him and Black Jack Randall - upon their first Claire understands very quickly that Black Jack is not her husband and that’s due partly to Jack’s behaviour being so much different from Frank’s.

Brandi Thomas lots of tv and movie productions change ages and appearances of characters, either to fit the actors they’ve chosen or to make things onscreen “more sexy” or “appealing” to the target audience. People back in the 1700’s seemed to age faster, than today.... A 50 year old Jamie, for example, would have looked much more like a man in his 60’s or 70’s would today. (Think seriously sun-damaged skin, overall bad health from bad nutrition and “battle” or “hard(er) labor damage.” ) For more realism, the show should have aged them just a bit more. (Even with the current makeup and slightly lighter wig - with barely any obviously visible grays - Jamie doesn’t really look more than someone in his late 30’s... just like actor Sam Heughan’s actual age.) But.... I understand, they’re trying to keep things “more sexy.” 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think there was also a small detail changed that changes everything: Black Jack and his brother Alex look a lot alike... like so alike that Claire first thinks she is in front of Black Jack when she meets him. I think, even though it would have been complicated for the actor to play three different roles, that it should have been played by Tobias Menzies. For Claire and Jamie, it was very important because, not only is Black Jack a sort of demon haunting them, he is also the face of Claire's husband, Frank. The first closest and most familiar person Claire has ever had since her uncle and it is the first face she meets when she travels and then, that familiar face turns into the face of a monster but she doesn't completely loathe her husband after her first travel because it was also the face of a pious and gentle man like Alex Randall. The same face covers three different personas she has met and she has to deal with it from three different ways... But with Alex who's played by a different actor... all the grief she feels when she looks at Jack, Alex and Frank is gone...

Oh Alex. I'm still crying over his death. Such a nice and innocent guy... I do agree that they should have done it more like in the books, with Claire fainting at the sight of Alex, beliving he is Jack. Also they could have highlighted the dilemma with Franks/Jacks/Alexs appearece. But on the other hand I understand they didn't take Tobias for that role. It wouldn't have fitted - besides the fact that he would have had played a much younger version of himself. And as I remember, she and Jamie only think from the distance he's Jack. In addition Alex isn't a "double" of Frank like Jack. Laurence Dobiesz portrait Alex perfectly and, I mean, he looks like a younger brother of Tobias anyway. But I understand your thoughts. I also would have liked it, if they made the first sight a shocking one. Talking about Jack. Another big thing they changed for the series, was Jack beating Alex up after he died. Never understood why they showed this, wasn't Alexs death supposed to be a scene, where Jack shows his "human" and vulnerable side and not his brutality.

Love Murtagh, but again, why this weird storyline with Jocasta...kind of spoils a different plot line, just for the character to still go nowhere. Bree isnt strong enough, Roger is whiney, Ian too wet...although since his return it looks a bit more promising, Fergus and Marsali lines almost non existent! Claire has no sense of humour and hasn't got the earthiness of the book character, it's been expunged, and Jamie has become very mono dimensional, again, no sense of humour showing. I'm watching Outlander now (a little bit late) and I felt SO disappointed when they get back together after 20 years of suffering and missing each other... I was holding my breath!!!! And then... Nothing. "Oh you're here, cool. I have a meeting now, would you mind?" 🙄 I just couldn't believe it. The writing until that point was so good, how could they ruined THE most important scene ever!????

The only thing that annoys me... Is that Claire and Jaime don't really age. Sure... 20 to 40 isn't that big of a difference, but when you're 50 you can't really look like you're 30. And yes I know people are gonna say: ''But they look good for their age in the books as well''... but they don't even have a wrinkle! Getting older doesn't mean you need to look ugly. And you can never be ''too pretty to age up'' as the producers say.

Lisa Maria van Harmelen I bet, this has everything to do with keeping things “more sexy.” Make them more “age correct” and the sex scenes may not look as appealing to a (presumably) “only youthful enough looking actors/characters should be having sex on screen” kind of audience. (Reminds me of The Tudors, where both.... Henry VIII and Charles Brandon were played by much younger and better looking actors, even toward the end when both men were actually “old and fat.”)

I never heard about the books until I started watching the show (am reading them now), so I'm definitely not in the camp that says the books are better. It's certainly not true that books are ALWAYS better than the screen adaptation, but it's called adaptation for a reason. If you know a lot will have to be cut out (especially with books that are so long) then it should go without saying that other things will have to be changed to make the TV version make sense. Maybe people wouldn't be so disappointed if they watched it for what it is. I'm finding it fun noting the differences, but I would rather watch the show. Some people will never even read the books, and I think the show runners have done a great job balancing that with the super high expectations of the readers.
@englishatheart
@englishatheart Жыл бұрын
You and many others need to understand that adaptations are created mainly based on the fans of the source material. If a book is utterly loathed, it is highly unlikely that it will be adapted. And, as a writer and lover of books, when I watch an adaptation, I want to see the source material brought to life on screen, not the director's "vision" of it. And I would hate seeing my own creation butchered. If someone can't stay true to the source material, they shouldn't make an adaptation. Create something entirely new instead, with different characters and a different title. I understand that some things will be left out, but most adaptations leave out important things or change things unnecessarily, which there is no excuse for. To act like it's wrong for fans of the source material to want to see said source material adapted faithfully is just ignorant, as there wouldn't be an adaptation if it weren't for the fans of the source material.

I've only read the first book, but I seem to remember that at the end of the book they didn't have issues of being intimate after Jamie's rape and that was the weirdest plot point for me because it was a big deal in the first couple of episodes in season 2 (could be wrong though, it's been a while) I also remember book fans being upset at Brianna not meeting Jenny when she first arrived in the past (because the actress wasn't available), is that true?

huh? the first book has months of Claire nursing Jamie back to health after he was tortured. They completely skipped all that in the show. Alatarielle I agree. Jamie’s recovery went much faster and “seamless” in the show. But I guess, the production felt they’d want to get back to “the sexy” faster... since a “properly executed recovery” would involve less “sexy” and more “stressful” emotional and physical healing. (Let’s face it, many producers are men that were probably not looking forward to any “non sexual therapy” a man like Jamie would probably need. “Sexy” is probably more their speed.)

There’s soooooo much that I disagree with here. Of course, you can’t fit these novels into a show, the show would be impossibly long. But Murtagh was not an insignificant character, at least not to me. I get he died early on but he still was very important. The fact that Laighaire (I might be misspelling that lol) and Jamie’s wedding was never a good one seems to be not mentioned...I could go on and on...I tried to love the show, but I can only like it, because it just can’t compare to the books!

Frank in the series, and Tobias Menzies's portrayal of him, is SO much better than the book. It gave me a lot of sympathy for the man. As for Claire's POV there are many points in the later books where Claire has no view...storylines of Lord John, Bree, Jamie etc that are clearly not in her POV. Murtagh's non-death is a sore spot for me as it is much more interesting IMO to see how Jamie goes through life without the major Father figures he grew up with. True Murtagh is missing from most of Jamie's post-Culloden life but the moments Jamie goes through mourning Murtagh, his grief changing through time (as grief does), his memories of Culloden resurfacing, those are great parts of the books.

There are a lot of things that are different. Some are down right STUPID! One of the worst mistakes they made was at the end of season one and rolls into season two. The last few chapters of book one was set in France. When he (Jamie) escaped from Wentworth prison, he and Claire went straight to a monastery in France. By the end of the book, he is much better and he and Claire are reconnected and having SEX! The series screwed that up royally. They were NOT close and they were not having sex. It was such a departure from the book that irked it me. I haven't rewatched that part of season one and two since. Writers were on their own little train that went off the cliff.

I've been frustrated at the many ways the show has deviated from the books. I know the books are 'huge' but to remove scenes from the book to then invent ones for the screen? doesn't make any sense. However, current circumstances have made me a little more understanding (although still not impressed) - in the UK we have Captain Tom Moore (100) who has raised millions for the NHS walking 'laps' around his garden. The generation of 'just get on with it'. Life has changed so much and I think the show's creators whilst making tremendous efforts to get the historical facts and looks right have failed abysmally in getting the characters right. The age you live in colours your view of things. My biggest gripe is that the writers have failed to keep the 'essence' of the characters and have looked far more at formulaic episodes than telling this beautiful story. Can't end this without saying 'poor Roger'. He had an awful time in the books but his onscreen life is even worse because they've changed him into a whiny 'I want to go home', can't do anything right sort of person when he was really much stronger than that. One tiny example - onscreen Jamie tells him he must kill Stephen Bonnet and Roger can't see himself taking a life. Book Roger asks Jamie to teach him to fight because he knows he must kill Stephen Bonnet.

There are two changes on this list that make me sad. 1. Bree giving birth for the reasons mentioned in the video. It would have been so moving! 2. Jamie’s reaction to Bree’s photos. The book reaction seems much more likely to seeing a photo the daughter you’ve never met. Not that Sam didn’t kill it in that scene anyway and the bikini thing is from the book just a later point. I like the fact that he immediately tells Claire about Willie in the show unlike in the book. The Laoghaire thing I can live with because in the show Jamie seems to marry her more for a ready made family than herself and she was young when she did that. People can grow. Also I always thought it odd in the book that Claire never told Jamie what she did. I agree about Frank being a more likeable character in the show but also Tobias Menzies is just so DAMNE charismatic.

Why are there so many shows that feel it is important to criticize the differences between the books and the series? Let's face it, they are both excellent and if the books were to be followed word for word, there would have to be a lot more episodes which would, most likely, run the costs up so much that we would probably only get a few less seasons thus condensing them even further. We should be happy we get what we do!!!!

Jamie told her before it happened that she could change her mind which was what he wanted and she said no. So no , I don't think it was rape, what she got was her own fault, she just said no when it was too late. What would you men do in that very same circumstance.? Truthfully?
