Thought crossed my own damned mind...🤔 Look, I'M put off by weird starchy globules suspended in my beverage (just LOOKING at Orbitz makes me dry heave), but bubble/boba tea has a long & proud (?!) culinary legacy.

Orbitz was awkward because the balls were so small. At least with bubble tea, you can easily chew the tapioca balls or pop the juice. Similar to Vio, I don't it was something that Americans could quite wrap their heads around. It felt like little squishy bits in your mouth. It wasn't bad; just weird.

@@Slade951 As an Asian myself, I have drank many interesting drinks, including coconut water from the Philippines with coconut bits in it, in fact I find it tastes better than the western brands of coconut water. Yes, I have also drank basil seed drinks, grass jelly drinks and nata de coco drinks, too.

I liked Orbitz when I was in my teens, and my mom's revolting reaction made it all the better. But from what I remember it was basically like drinking that syrup in canned fruit straight with tiny pieces of Jello. It wasn't the worst thing I've drank. It was just very sweet and lacking flavour. I much prefer Mama Chia drinks that have chia seeds that naturally form a jelly coating when put into liquid.

Speaking as someone who was a Canadian teenager when it was released and discontinued the original Orbitz wasn't actually bad and a friend of mine was mixing cola and cold coffee like nearly 20 years before Coca-Cola Blak even existed.

I think it was around the time my dad died that I saw in stores in the United States. I just thought it was the coolest thing ever, and I was always happy when my mom bought it for me. I think I would have had it been eight or nine, because my dad died when I was nine.

Boba/Bubble Tea is big tapioca pearls at the bottom, not little orbs of jelly floating around in a drink. You can chew the boba or tapioca pearls because they are quite big while with the Orbitz you had to swallow them with the liquid, and I'm guessing to most that feeling was unpleasant and probably triggered gagging or coughing fits due to how it felt when that tsunami of jelly balled drink hit the back of the throat.

The 90s wasn't a time where companies could flaunt sugary things. A candy based (and candy tasting) soda was something that people walked away from (except for kids; I remember loving the stuff). NOW, when we have KFC releasing a chicken sandwich with donut buns, this sort of drink would probably sell a lot better.

I have to wonder if Orbitz was going for something like the basil seed drink I still occasionally buy at the Chinese supermarket. Little floating black seeds in a viscous syrupy drink. I've tried most of the Lester's Fixin's drinks, although haven't actually seen the ranch dressing one. Surprisingly, the more-or-less normal sounding ones like pumpkin pie and PB&J were disappointing. The buffalo wing one was okay, the bacon is pretty good, and the sweet corn is totally awesome. Someone at WatchMojo now needs to go back and check out UCC black coffee in a can with a twist-off cap. I love it iced. BTW, are they still selling Zima?

It was a bad idea at the time. In the mid-80s, juice flavored drinks like Slice and Sunkist were really popular because people were trying to walk away from certain types of sugary drinks, specifically colas (let's ignore the obvious issue with sugar content). In the early 90s, Lifesavers soda was trying to compete with Fruitopia. But the problem was that the marketing made it *very* clear that they were selling liquid candy to you (and that's exactly what it tasted like too) and in the health conscience 90s, where people were willing to drink Tab Clear in order cut calories, this wasn't going to fly.

The stuff in the box was intended to be reheated. It was room temperature coffee, in a box. It failed because it doesn't do anything better. Coffee in a box wasn't faster because it needed to be reheated. It wouldn't taste any better than a freshly brewed pot (which takes about the same amount of time to make) because it's been sitting in a box. TL:DR; there was no point to the product existing. It wasn't any faster not did it taste any better than using a coffee maker. The only ready-to-drink coffee I've seen at the grocery store is the iced coffee in the refrigerator cases. They are intended to be consumed cold. You don't have to put one of those coffees in the microwave before you can drink it.

I think there were a few other beverages like Orbits that came out around the same time - their gimmick was that they gave you "carbs" to help you recover energy. This was almost exactly the same time when the Atkins diet started to become a big thing so the drinks never stood a chance.

You cannot crack on Orbitz. That was the shiiiiit when I was a kid. When school was done and we’d get off the bus, we’d rush to the little mini store we’d pass by and get our favorite flavors. And I’d run to the candy section and grab a few Spice Girls lollipops!!! Jesus I’m showing my age 🤦🏽‍♀️

Pepsi AM may have been something I would have drunk in college (I used to wash down Vivarin with Jolt Cola). I think the mistake was in marketing it as a morning drink, rather than for finals study sessions. Orbit was weird but OK. Actually, in CA, there are various tea places that serve something called "boba" or "bubble tea" that have . . . I think it's tapioca balls in the drink. I didn't care for it myself but other people seemed to like it. Also, something I actually LIKED making for myself? Getting jello, chopping / smushing it up into little pieces and throwing it into a glass of cold 7-up or Sprite. In Japan, I had this weird combination of ice-cream soda and jello that I actually liked. I liked watching the little bits of jello rise and fall with the bubbles and the odd combination of the jello texture with the carbonated drink.

There was this Anti Energy drink that some friends and I used to drink like 10 years ago called Drank. I think was supposed to imitate the drink Purple Drank which was the drug Promethazine mixed with Sprite that was drunk at a lot of parties.

Orbitz was awesome. I was very sad when it got discontinued. As for the comment about "finding jelly balls in your drink"...um, the bottle was clear so you knew exactly what you were getting. It was not a surprise.

Someone gave me the ranch soda before as a joke at Christmas and it almost turned into a fight until they showed me it was a real soda

I did not know about most of these except for Coca Cola Black (though I bought the glass bottle ones back in high school and they tasted alright). If the people who created the Tru Blood Beverages had made them more as beverages instead of a "Collector's Item" and possibly make them a bit tastier, folks would probably be buying them more often

My husband had an Orbitz in the 90's and he is still talking about how awesome it was.
