Well I'm a farmer and not having a Rottweiler on the top 10 is not right. Hes a city boy and is not taking into account small animals. Chickens lambs ect. They have to be good with all livestock.

I have a Lapland reindeer herding dog and a Karakachan. Both are excellent in our extreme heat, wild hogs and dumped pit bulls. We have sheep, ducks and quail. Both are good herders and guardians. We are active at lakes and parks but primary job is as a police dog. Good prey drive, utility skills and do not wander. I've always had GSD's as K9 partners and herders at home but, these two really fill the want list as well

@@springfieldkakaruk2346 I have a male gsd and two months ago I kept hearing the cows getting spooked. So I though it was just coyotes so it was no big deal. But one night I heard footsteps on the porch human footsteps . So I grabbed my double barrel shotgun with a flashlight strapped on and I had my hand cannon in my pocket so I put some body armor on my dog and we set out and started searching the property we checked the barn the coop the pig pen and finally the pastor. And we both saw someone sneaking around in the pastor so I shined my flashlight that I had on the guy and sicked my boy on em and let me tell you! I have never seen a man run so fast in my life XD . Me and my dog chased him through some woods until he stumbled and my dog brought him down we called the cops and he got arrested. And thing is I put a sign up saying that farmer shoots then I wrote in red letters to kill then the other part said that dog on premises

Blue heeler makes a awesome homestead dog too. No mastiff size but holy cow can they take a beating all day and not ever slow down. Little tanks of dogs.

They are great dogs but they really need a stimulating job; not just hanging out around the farm in case they need to protect it, they were bred to herd and be active... But I agree for an all around farm dog they are awesome!! The smaller herding breeds are my favorites but people need to know what they are getting into when they get one; with proper training and lots of stimulation they are the best dogs ever, but if people get them because they're cute and expect them to just hang out they are in for a surprise when they occupy themselves in a destructive fashion...

@Jordan I have a border collie and even at 10yo she always wants to be doing something 😋 I've also had a corgi jack russel cross who was the smartest dog ever but so sneaky 😂 the smart herder plus spunky terrier was quite a cross would recommend to anyone with patience and a sense of humor + lots of energy... It's really sad what is happening with shady corgi breeders now that they are so popular... My top personal dog breeds in no particular order would be Border Collies, Pembroke and Cardigan Welsh Corgis, Shelties, Mini Australian Shepherds, Australian Cattle Dogs, Swedish Vallhunds, Icelandic Sheepdogs, Norwegian Buhunds, Schipperke, and Finnish and Swedish Lapphunds... Basically herding breeds under 50lbs, they are a manageable size to take places (I love taking my dog hiking), but also smart and tough enough to keep up with whatever you're doing... I can't see myself ever being without a smaller herder or ever wanting anything else. Like you said they can be tough; after all Karelian Bear Dogs are about 50lbs and they hunt bears and other large game so size is not always indicative of protection ability... Just because a dog is huge doesn't make it a great protector and just because a dog is smaller doesn't mean it can't protect

I have had herding dogs most of my life. ACDs entered my life in the later years. My male lived up the road( I live in desert rural area). He was not my dog.he was 7 months old and I was sitting on my porch. He heard the rattler as soon as I did. He was there, by the time I walked down the stairs( place was not fenced then). He put his body between me and the rattler. He has fended off coyotes. Fought wild dogs twice his size to protect HIS livestock and me. A meth head broke the lock on my gate one night, my boy surprised the hell out of me. They will HEEL!( bite ankles, normal for them. I would NEVER recommend this dog without a job. All of mine will stop eating to go to “work”...

Blue heelers are way up the top for complete obidience if the trainer is up to the job. Amazing dog. Only destructive if you allow that behaviour a proper owner will not have that issue

I've had my corso for a few years, shes definitely my baby she's an amazing companion. Somehow we were recently adopted by a female min pin puppy... She's very brave. My corso is on top of everything that happens in my home and property, she was dumbfounded when the puppy showed up. My husband told me to leave them alone I was scared what Sasha (corso) was going to do you the puppy, but he said she'll know its a puppy... it took a few weeks, but now the puppy curls up on top of Sasha and naps with her, Sasha will let the puppy eat 1st, and I pretend to get mad at the puppy and Sasha gets in between me and the puppy and and she'll lay down and show me her belly... It's the cutest thing ever. If the puppy is outside and wants to come in Sasha will cry and cry until her puppy is safe with her... Corsos are amazing, and min pins are seriously out of their minds!

Excellent vlog as always. The Australian cattle dog, although no mastiff in size, makes an excellent homestead dog also. What they lack in size they gain in intelligence and willingness to work. Thanks for sharing.

heelers are the most underestimated dog out there , controllable , biddable , fiercely loyal , and able to shred to pieces coyotes, among other things ..... this is not a dog i want pissed off at me ....... on the flip side they are also kind gentle and calm and smarter than collies

UzeHerName totally agree. I had a Blue Heeler as my first dog at 19. He was by far the most fearless, loyal, active and intelligent dog I’ve owned. I could not tire this dog out. Since then for the past 30 years Ive had Staffordshire Bull Terriers and despite the ignorant, bad wrap this breed has copped, the Cattle Dog in my opinion was a far more tougher, active and loyal guard dog.

Charles Boston totally agree. I had a Blue Heeler when I was 19. It’s not the dog in the fight it’s the fight in the dog when it comes to homestead dogs and he was incredible in every aspect. Highly intelligent, loyal and would lay down his life for you.

I love my Cane Corso! Great, affectionate, strongly bonded dog with family! Not a big barker, which I like, but when he does make noise there's a good reason for it. SERIOUSLY protective of family, home and property; No Training Needed! He's bigger than what you mentioned for males in your video; he weighs 130 pounds. I love him soooo much!

Great video! You produce some very well informed material. My Dad would talk a lot about a German Shepherd that he had owned back in the 60s. He owned an acreage and that dog was the best. He would tell stories that any visitor had to stay in their car until my Dad or his first Wife would say it was ok for that person to be on their property.

Glad I found this vid. I have a kangal/gsd mix and shes the most intelligent, creative and funny dog I’ve ever owned. Completely independent thinker like the kangal but extremely loving and snuggly like the German. Hard as hell to train cuz of her aloofness but she learns things immediately. Just a word one time with context and she understands, doesn’t even need repetition to learn. I have owned many many large breed intelligent dogs in my life but this one has completely blown away what I could have imagined dogs were capable of.

Central asian shepherd should make the list 100% but your top 10 is good

I would consider central asian shepherds and caucasian shepherds just as good as Tibetan shepherds. I would only recommend Tibetan and Caucasians if you live in colder climates with 4 or more months with winter conditions.

Dogo's are amazing dogs, loving & protectors, great with kids when raised around family. great hunting/ running down prey, need lots of room to run. 1 of my favorites

All these are great breeds, but no boerboel, rottweiler, cucasian shepperd, bullmastiff of central asia shepperd. I would say this category calls for a top 15 at least with all the great guard breeds out there.

Great video! Thanks. #10 on your list looked exactly like a rescue we once loved. He was the most amazing, slobbery Lassie ever. Fiercely protective of our entire family, including the other dogs and also our property. We once had a problem because he would go visit our neighbor, ring the doorbell and wait for his great to arrive. Because of that though, he claimed their property as territory as well. So he would try to protect their house from their grown children. He had to be walked on a leash after that. Lol

Lived on a farm my whole life, still do. The most important trait for a dog that has 3000 acres to traverse: endurance. Because of this the most USEFUL breeds we have had on the farm are: #1 german shepherd #2 australian cattle dog #3 Australian shepherd #4 rottweiler #5 border collie This breeds know how to go go go and never quit working, never need to slow you down or take a break.

@@elijahfoster5943 they are bred more for sheep. While they can herd cattle they are more prone to injury. They are probably the smartest, but the last one you would want to get kicked.

In 1919 my grandfather was given a one year old German Shepperd by a co worker. The man and dog had just come to Canada after WW1 . My mum told us the dog lived until 1942. She added she was not like Shepperd's of today , but smaller with shorter hair.

My brother has a Great Pyrenees and he is just as you say. We live on either side of the same 100 acre farm and the dog watches over my wife and I just as he does my brother and his wife. Someone had abandoned the dog and my brother rescued him, it took a week or so to settle in but he is the sweetest, most protective dog. We aren’t bothered by coyotes so much anymore.

Agree with most breeds listed and excited to see Dogo Argentino included here. Dogos are super smart and all around awesome. IMO, missing form this list are Central Asian Ovcharka and Caucasian Ovcharka. These guys have great guarding abilities.

Great video I liked all the dogs that you mentioned but I got to say I was surprised as everyone else in the comment section that the Boerboel was not mentioned. I thought that the barbel was going to be the number one dog on this Homestead list. The awesome work once again keep up the good work! And I think it would make a great video to explain the difference between a kangal and the antonian Shepherd those two dogs get confused a lot a lot of people think they are the same breed because they come from the same country most people don't understand their from different parts of the same country so they were bred differently!

The Boerboel was designed exactly for this. Mine, not even trained, saved my life in a home invasion here in South Africa. They were bred to guard homesteads and farms in South Africa. Ask the dog whisperer who's favorite dog became the "Boerboel" Once you have a Boerboel you will NEVER go back! I've had many dogs in my lifetime and, hands down, the Boerboel wins when it comes to guarding the home. They love to run and they need a huge property to chase and run on. If you do get a Boerboel, make sure you get an athletic build and that they are not too heavy for speed and health reasons as the Boerboel loves to run. Yes, you will fall in love. They become your children, and they are the BEST most intelligent dogs EVER!

Owned and trained German Shepherds, grew up with them on a ranch, the sizes you mentioned are AKC standard which represents show lines which are always very small in comparison to most working lines, I have never had a male German Shepherd less than around 90 pounds and have had ones up to 120. I would throw in working line Belgian Malinois and Dutch Shepherds on that list.

This is a great video of the best protection dogs for a homestead, but a good homestead dog is more than a protector. I would love to see a top 10 functional farm dog breeds video as in dogs that can do many farm jobs such as protect, pest control, herding, hunting etc..

Beauceron #1. Never stops working the perimeter. Smart enough to know when and how to respond. Most mastiff type dogs I have seen lack the discernment ability and stamina for a large property.

@@averageguruenjoyer6938 wrong! Boerboels are far from dog aggressive, they are farm dogs that work with other dogs. Dogo, presa and kangel's have been used for dog fighting. He has even said this in other vids, which is why Im surprised they are on his list. It's his opinion but I think he missed the mark with some of his selections.

You could easy make a top 20. It's of course what you preffer best in a breed. I agree on the Boerboel. I also miss the Dogue de Bordeaux, Bull mastiff, Rottweiler in there. But it's also personal and what fits best with you and your environment what you preffer in a dog.

Fila Brasilero is a great watchdog originated in Brazil they are a cross of Mastiff and Bloodhound. I have one that is very protective, loyal and very Alert when Strangers are around. I think that this breed of dog isn't well known for its abilities but should be. Got mine for Protection and she hasn't failed me yet!

Hi. Thanks for the great job. The Komondor (the Hungarian sheepdog) can also do the job. The Central Asian Shepherd Dog (Alabai) or the Boerboel too. All the livestock guardian dogs from Central Asia are field-proven, bred to protect the livestock from large predators, often with no man's assistance.

I have had three johnson american bull dogs. by far my favorite breed. 1. training is a must. basic 2 week boot camp, and then do an off leash 2 week about one year later. Also, socialize socialize socialize!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! very early and introduce to all your friends and family because about the 2 year mark they get set in their ways and boundaries.... cheers

The Rottweiler was originally a Roman cattle herding dog, and we all know they make great guard dogs. The Rottweiler would be a good choice for a homestead.

My grandfather bought a “trained Fila”. She was 200 pounds plus and mean! I was 10 years old and forgot to not run around her. She chased me down and tossed me around like a rag doll. It took my grandfather and my grandmother a good 2 minutes to get Mary “fila” off of me. She just ripped my pants and bruised me up a bit. I don’t think she was really trying to hurt me. A dog that size can do some damage!

I've owned a Dogo Argintina and He was amazing and now I have a Cane Corse which at 6 months she is sitting at 85lbs. Also both dogs wish someone would break in to my house and on that same token I take both my Akita and Cane to the dog park 3 times a week

I have a Boz sheppard she is like the Great Pyanese an livestock guardian dog. There are also Akbash, I have one of these as well. Like the Boz sheppard and the Pyranese they are great dogs. These dogs are from Turkey. There is also the Marema from Italy, also a livestock guardian dog (LGD).

Honestly the Kangal is just a variation of the Anatolian Shepherd dog local to a small part in Anatolia. That the AKC treats them as 2 different breeds is bullshit (the AKC itself is not really a good dog organization in my opinion). The FCI (which is more reliable, in my opinion) treats them as one.

This is a sore spot for a lot of people, but I absolutely agree. Anatolians are a landrace breed(which is not a commonly understood term), and a Kangal is really just a regional variety of that.
