You mentioned the dog in RE4.. For me, one of the best dogs in a game is Hewie from Haunting Ground. You find Hewie suffering from a collar and once you release him, Hewie becomes your protector. He isnt afraid of anyone chasing you, he helps you escape once your captured near the end and you can even find a ball to play fetch. (Playing helps him learn to respond when you command him, so remember to scold and praise as needed) Without Hewie, young Fiona would have suffered a fate far worse than death. And since you are a completionist... there's even a costume you get for letting Hewie die. and that is heart breaking to get. You have to abuse him through the whole game so he'll die at a certain spot (kicking him, always scolding him... and when he outright starts attacking Fiona, you know you are on that path). That triggers the games worst ending and unlocks a costume. Hewie is the best Dog.

Dogmeat is the goodest boy. I loved him so much that I downloaded a mod to make him invincible and immortal because I didn't want him getting hurt. And even then I still gave him armor and every time I find dog food I put it in his inventory. I'd be mad that he wasn't here, but Lesser Dog is here, so I guess we're gucci.
