Love to hear and see the playthrough of all of these, but it is very difficult to really rank them. I personally started using Hertz drums lately. Very versatile and loads of sound options, so while the preset used here might not sound better than some other virtual drums, you can find or make the preset that does. Same goes for all of these of course, you can make most of these sounding very natural or totally artificial. Good thing is that we are spoiled for choice to pick what we feel works best for us.

Great video. Personally, I'd swap Ultimate Heavy Drums and Fotis Benardo Drums. It's true that UHD sounded better for this song, but Fotis Benardo Drums is the best library I've tried, and I've tried many. They say it's focused on realism, and I agree, Stigmatized Productions really nailed that part, adding so many articulations and samples for velocity control, and a powerful internal mixer plus raw unprocessed samples, you can go nuts, fun for years. On the other hand, when I tried UHM I was a bit disappointed after all the hype, the toms tend to sound robotic even with a good programmed midi, and the velocity control is kind of limited. The kit sounds great and the visuals are far better, though. In conclusion, I'd choose FBD any day. With a good mix, you can get way better results, but I get many people prefer something very mix-ready so they can tweak just a bit and forget about it. I'd also recommend Bogren Trivium Drums. It's one of those set-and-forget kits, and a one-trick pony, but very well done. Though it's not for any metal genre, I actually use it for modern melodic punk.
@DuFFuLАй бұрын
I think the reason I actually tried UHD was for the simplicity. I can certainly agree that FGD certainly sounds a bit more realistic and certainly has better in-built features, I feel that for me UHD just really suits my sound. I think at the end of the day the most important aspect of any drum plugin is, how well does it sit in "your" mix? I think every single plugin on my list is amazing and I could certainly use any of them and I have but, Ultimate heavy drums just suited my tones and style that little bit better than all the rest. This is what I love about metal. So many different genres and flavors and they can all work so well for different people!
@peptoattackАй бұрын
@@DuFFuL Yeah! Sure thing. This is obviously your opinion and your taste, it would be impossible to make a video like this in an "objective" way. You did score some objective points, but in the end, it's your soul in this list. And like I mentioned, I do get why people prefer stuff that it's just easy to make it sound good. I like the extra effort of messing with different options and features, but I guess I'm the minority here. Again, great video!

@DuFFuL2 ай бұрын
You could easily make a Frankenstein kit by simply adding all your favorite drum plugins and them muting the kit pieces you don't want to hear. I often do this when I want extra cymbals on a kit that doesn't have many. Like EZdrummers Post metal kit. It only has so, I will add Steven slate just to use the cymbals as extras. Map them to the right place on the Midi map so they are not clashing with the cymbals from EZ and done. Works perfectly!

Interesting list and cool to hear all these different kits. I don't know how it is with your top 3 kits, but I do wonder how versatile they are. One thing I love about Toontrack stuff is how you can create your own sounds and change up the factory presets, so that you don't sound like everyone else and their mother. I will look into that.
@DuFFuL4 ай бұрын
I love toontrack stuff. Its why EZdrummer was on this list. I don't have superior drummer, and I know with that you can control every aspect of the kit but not so with EZdrummer. Ezdrummer is very limited in the way you control reverb especially. I'm not saying that this list is about not sounding like everyone else. Its more just about the plugins themselves. For example, it can be quite a challenge to get EZdrummer to sit in a mix quickly whereas my top 3 are not (for me anyway). The top 3 also have more built-in options such as EQ, Compression and transient settings built directly into them. You will notice that EZdrummer was the only one to get a top score for looks. It always looks amazing. But say for example the Death Metal EZX. I love that expansion but always found it has way too much reverb over the toms and kick, it sounds great on the snare but I have no control to simply turn the reverb down on everything except the snare. The reverb affects the whole kit. Not cool.
@DEADLINETV4 ай бұрын
@@DuFFuL I totally hear what you're saying! And in all honesty, I do miss that in a lot of EZX's and also SDX's. And I can imagine a lot of people are looking for that. Also a more contemporary sound, again, with nothing but respect for the Toontrack stuff. Having said all that, EZDrummer does offer the option to send each fader to a separate output so you can add your own reverb and it even comes with the Original Mix with even more individual control to use with different outputs) for more mixing options. So if in DeathMetal reverb is an issue, it can be tackled. I personally love reverb and EZDrummers uses good sounding reverb, so I'm usually OK. But, look into that!

@@DEADLINETV hey man I’m not disagreeing with you at all. Toontrack stuff is amazing. I have been using ezdrummer since the first one released and I own a lot of the EZXs. I really do believe ezdrummer is an amazing product. If you go back though my video you will see how many reviews I’ve done of ezdrummer and its expansions and I’ve always spoken very highly of them. Good list! However, I strongly disagree on the Modo Drum. I've been using it's full paid version for extreme metal production and e-drum practice for a couple of years, and loved it from the get go. You have to use the right kit though, as some of the kits there are not for metal at all. It's pretty strongly processed, but still natural, sounds really good in the mix, no machine gun effect, nice organic cymbal swells. I actually play it on my e-drums though an audio interface real time with a double bass pedal. Not sure what issues you've run into with it. - Another drum program I highly recommend is the good old BFD3. Also sounds very nice, realistic, large kits choice, but less processed than Modo Drum or EZ Drummer and such. Much more on the raw signal side, so you'd have to work more to make it mix-ready. Has nice realistic cymbal swells as well, and is also very good for real-time e-drum practice. - I also like Steven Slate Drums 5 overall, but it's swells are stampy, you can hear samples repeating.

It would be really great to hear some of your stuff and see how you implement Modo drums into your mixes. No matter how hard I try, I just can't gel with it at all. To my ears it sounds absolutely fake and unnatural. I could hear it being good with an Ekit for everyday use as a kit but for mixing I feel they really missed the mark on that one. Is there anywhere I can listen to your music and your use of Modo Drums?
@greymatter8005 ай бұрын
@@DuFFuL It might be a matter of sound preferences to some degree. I like your taste in sound production, the full-bodied chunky groovy sound (and riffs) - that's my thing :) I haven't published the new material yet, still work in progress. But as for the metal drum kits in Modo, I recommend "Djentelman" (as a base, and then mix 'n' match individual pieces with other kits to your taste). The "Metal" kit seems good as well, but I haven't tried it out yet, as my older original version of Modo Drum doesn't have it (needs a paid upgrade). I still tweak the settings in Modo to my taste, but overall it was easier to make it sound "album ready" in the mix than BFD3 or Steven Slate Drums 5. I also like that Modo uses sound synthesis along with samples, so to my understanding, each new hit is a bit different. But now you got me interested in the MDL Tone Ultimate Heavy Drums though :)
@DuFFuL5 ай бұрын
@@greymatter800 I did use the Djentlemen kit in my previous video about modo drums when I did an in-depth review of it and it still sounded horrible to my ears. To me it just doesn't sound natural all and even when it does start to sound even a little bit good, it is so far below the other plugins in sound quality that I just don't bother. Especially for the amount of work and processing you have to do to get to that point. Plugins should save you time and enhance your mixes, not make you fight with them. @@DuFFuL Oh, all right - I didn't know you had a full Modo Drum video. Just watched it and actually like your mix and Modo Drum sound there :) To my ears it sounds more heavy, thick and punchy. Yes, the drum plugins in this list have a different processing paradigm with scooped mids, softer, less punchy bass and crystal highs. They are also an equally excellent option depending on the sound you want to get. Again, purely a matter of taste and preference. Cheers!

@@DuFFuL Even if you can have a multi out, sound are in most case already process... Unfortunately most of drum VST are ""pre-mixed"... so most of them you cannot working the RAW sound of it. That' s why for me Ugritone was so important.

I just watched the demo for Heavyocity Damage Drum Kit - sounds very interesting and different, more in the Slipknot-y drum area. Have you tried it, and if so, what is your opinion?

@@DuFFuL Sure, you are welcome! Look forward to your review of this plugin if you have a chance to make one! (btw just in case, it's currently on sale at Pluginboutiqe - I'm not affiliated with any of them :) )

why don't you do a best of Cymbals, which vst has the most realistic ones ?
@DuFFuL4 ай бұрын
@@dougb3854 actually that is a damn good idea! Cymbals are such a big thing and no one really considers how important they are in a plugin. Thanks for the great idea man!!

do any of these come mix ready? I thought i heard MDL does in a way.
@DuFFuL5 ай бұрын
I would say all of them come somewhat mix ready but saying that is kind of hard because, mix ready depends on a lot of factors including guitar tone, bass tone, and a bunch of other factors. But yes, all of them are mix ready out of the box.

no love for Superior Drummer? Also missing Kurt Ballou 2 from Room Sound. The articulations and mixing engine put it above mixwave for me. I don't mind MDL but the lack of snare articulations grind my gears. No rimshots. Come on. Cheers and thanks

I can only go off the ones I actually own. Unfortunately, I don't own superior drummer. I will check out the Kurt Ballou one for sure though! Thanks for the suggestion!!

ML Drums is my favorite (just my opinion). But they all sound really good. Brooks Wackerman , my least fav (though he's a killer drummer).

@DuFFuL does the job well, the creator answered one of my emails, I asked him for the mapping he sent me a recording to download it on my daw and ask me to send it back next thing he send me the mapping isn't that awesome for a small donation that he asks

@@jcalzada74 For sure. It's really great when dealing with smaller companies and creators of plugins. They are so much more helpful and personal than some of the larger companies!!

I would really love the Superior Drummer 3 a go one day. Many times, I've thought about buying it but just never taken the plunge. I've honestly nothing but great things about it.
