I've been to my fair share of away games in Germany, and always been struck with the atmosphere and the fans' behaviour. My first time was away at Schalke, and sitting in a bar with a couple of other United fans when a whole group of local fans walked in. Normally, as we all know, in the UK that would almost certainly mean trouble. They clocked us, and came straight over, and sat down uninvited at our table. They wanted to know why we weren't drinking schnapps, and informed us that we were really missing out, before shouting us a round of schnapps, followed by another. No trouble, lots of laughs. Brilliant night, brilliant fans.

Saaame. I was like, damn those Germans are honest, huh? But really, I think you're more likely to see this fair play in the Bundesliga than Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, etc, etc.. I'm American and I watch soccer. People make fun of Americans and Americans make fun of soccer. But the thing is: faking fouls and faking injuries is highly dishonorable in our sporting culture. It's beginning to change... for the worse. But if someone fakes a foul (and especially if someone fakes an injury!) in American football, that guy will be in the newspaper for all the wrong reason.
@cerisambrook76924 жыл бұрын
Me too! I was thinking how well mannered the German league is to have so many entries... D'oh!
@TristanWeijermars4 жыл бұрын
@@michaelgiovanniello3230 You're right. It seems to be very much a football (soccer) thing. But there are some explanations possible. Of course it is a contact sport in a big field with only one referee and a couple of linesmen, so much can go undetected (compare for example with what goes on under water in a water polo game), a lot of money is involved, and, importantly, there is a limited time that the game lasts, so I can imagine it's tempting. And faking a foul can be quite rewarding, with possibilities to get a free kick, to take the momentum out of the game when the opposing team is in a flow, or even to have an opponent player being sent off. I often compare football with cycling. When professional cyclists fall, they only want to get back on the bicycle and go on. Even when they are injured they first get back on the bike and only then start looking at the physical damage. Hardly ever they would blame someone else for the fact they fell, even if it was not their own fault. Real sportsmanship? I suppose, but then again, what would be the point of faking? They don't gain anything by laying around faking injuries: the race will go on, it only costs time that they don't want to loose and the chance that an opponent gets taken out of the race is very, very slim. Besides, a cyclist trying to take down a opponent takes a real risk to fall as well. So, finally, that is why it is so good that in football there now is the video referee, and that there is a fourth referee keeping an eye on the injury time. A lot of cases of faking things can now be detected and trying to gain (or should I say lose?) time has become a lot harder. Hopefully the next step is that players that fake injuries or commit sneaky, mean fouls will be punished severely.

@Harvey Holmes i think what it is is that they went down knowing there’d be contact which honestly helps u avoid injury from the incoming challenge. But once they realized that the tackle missed and didn’t make contact, they admit that they went down without contact. Half the time a challenge comes in, the dribbler can tell if the tackle is gona make contact and be a foul. When theyre wrong, at least Bundesliga players admit it. Thats why i wouldn’t really call it a dive. A dive is more so when you know there’s not gona be a foul but still go down anyway. But the guys in this vid are foreseeing the contact so they go down but they admit if theyre wrong. I feel like there is a philosophical difference.
