Over the last century or so, our world has become a pretty darn big place. Between 1980 and 2014, the World Health Organization estimates global obesity doubled. In the US alone, more than two thirds of all adults are considered overweight, with one third considered obese (33%). That’s gotta be a world leader, right? Well, believe it or not, America doesn’t even break the top 10 countries on the obesity scale. It sits at 16th, between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. That’s right. There are at least fifteen countries with bigger waistlines than in the US.

That is incorrect and while I know you're asking for some commie gobbeldy-gook, the demonstration is that plenty of places have massive swaths of fast food and a relatively slim healthy population and 10 of these populations at the top have no special fast food availability either. If you had no other option but 'fast food' you'd still be perfectly capable of being as slim as you want to be. No fast food restaurant on earth every held a gun at someone and forced them to eat 1000 calories more than they needed.

Actually, in the US it's more about the degradation of our food and the nutrition misinformation out there propagated by the USDA as a result of food industry lobbyists. This is why American farm products have been widely banned in Europe. European countries tend to care about the health of their citizens, because the government pays the medical bills. Yet another argument for single payer healthcare.

I'm saying this as a Canadian. This video blames America for every single one of these countries weight problem. You know what, I don't give a shyte how many fast food restaurants are on my block or in my neighborhood, the person that decides to eat fast food is me. So do not blame America for being fat. Do not blame corporations for being fat. Blame yourself.

And obesity is a major and growing problem in all western countries, including Canada, Australia and the UK!
@LadyAxe13
@LadyAxe13 5 жыл бұрын
I agree that we do that to ourselves, but I still think a lot of people get fat because the comfort is an option. If there are NO fast food restaurants, you simply CANNOT get fat, whether you have discipline or not, you know? A lot of people are lazy to cook, so they opt for that accessible comfort of ordering pizza...before they know it, they are fat. Take away the comfort, and even the ill disciplined people will be forced to eat right.
@stevenleahy5088
@stevenleahy5088 5 жыл бұрын
It's not just about fast food. Junk food is readily available in any store. It's about being in a sedentary culture where people get little to no exercise, combined with people who eat constantly, with lots of between-meal eating which wasn't nearly as common in generations past. People honestly in some countries just don't physically move enough, and it's a problem getting worse throughout the west and even in countries like China. Overweight and obesity rates are only separated by a few percentage points in all the major English speaking countries though the stereotype likes to paint Am's as being much worse than everyone else (not really true). It's the basic equation of calories in and calories out. I for one do NOT want the Big State controlling what I eat or have access to.

LadyAxe13 I believe in liberty, so if there was no alcohol, you can't get drunk. If there is no bad food, you can't get fat etc etc. Personally, it's MY choice to eat or drink. No one else's, as long as I'm not hurting anyone else. And before you say, well it causes a drain on society because of things like diabetes - lots of behaviors cost society, for example - any extreme sport. Should we ban that too?

@@LadyAxe13 I live near many fast food restaurants as I'm sure you probably do to. But I'm not fat (anymore). They can exist and people can be healthy. Ppl just tend to demand unhealthy foods (they're very hyperpalletable). If you think about it no food in nature contains sugar, fat, and salt at the smae time(but fast food and processed foods do). I don't buy their product but many other ppl supply the demand. It's lifestyle. I like the expression "genetics loads the gun, lifestyle pulls the trigger." It's what you're taught and your environment. I dont think you can blame businesses. If more ppl demanded healthier alternatives they would supply it. Similar to how you're seeing alot of plant based options in markets and restaurants. It is choice and you have the power to make a difference

We're the fattest OECD country, but not the fattest country overall. It was last updated in 2020 and has us ranked 12th now. Most of the countries ranked above us are small South Pacific nations like Samoa, the Cook Islands, and Nauru (1st btw). Kuwait's also above us, the only one that I know isn't in the Oceania region (though I have never heard of some of the countries, so I don't know where they are lol) Essentially out of countries that are major players on a global scale with substantial populations, we're the fattest. Though all the percentages should be took with a massive grain of salt considering BMI is the measurement used. BMI is flawed as hell. It considers a lot of athletes obese because it only takes height and weight into account and muscle weighs more than fat.

I agree that it would be great if we could all get into gardening, even community gardening for those that don't have the space. Also, visiting the local fresh food markets a little more often. Not an attractive diet to someone like myself that sadly doesn't always enjoy 'healthy' food, but we definitely should make more of an effort to adopt more self sustaining diets and stockpiling stuff for winter when things are out of season. Here in Utah, we jar a lot of our fruits for winter use, we're #49 on the fattest states list and that may be part of the reason (but not all of us engage in that activity, though I grew up doing so).

Soul Journey: to each his own. Your mileage may vary. Generally, it's just too damn many calories for how much your body burns off. Everything else is detail. But believe what you want. Just don't try to foist it off on others, as everyone has slightly different needs. Clearly, though, whatever Julia is eating, she's eating a bit too much for how much she burns off. Let it go at that. That's enough to get started with. Look it up online, count calories, caluculate your BMR and eat 500 fewer calories a day than you burn off for one year. Voila, you will lose 52 pounds. About a pound a week. That's it, baby.

Well I know that I see far more fat people here in 'Murrica now then I did as a child in the 80s and 90s. I see more fat kids too. It used to be there was that one fat kid. He was known as the fat kid and sadly, he got picked on because of it. Now you see a lot more fat kids. To me, the bad processed foods and fast foods are mostly nasty and I don't want to eat them. But the temptation is constantly there for everyone who does like them. The human body is still in caveman mode and that's why we hold onto so much fat. In case of famine. Any women who get ravenous before their period know the feeling. It's because your body thinks you might get pregnant and wants to prepare itself in case you are with child during famine.

LeosHouse - Read the labels as best as possible. There's really no other way. The real "enemy" are the carbohydrates (sugars) used by the food industry. For quick profit, in detriment of the population health. The industry lobbies are so powerful that even clear and concise labeling are a big problem, particularly in US. An easy way to keep people "blind". On a general note ALL processed food!! :-(

BMI can give misleading results, but it is quick and easy to calculate for a large number of people as you only need to know the weight and height of the people. Other methods that would be more accurate would take too long and cost too much. There is also the question what level of accuracy are you looking for, anyway. BMI becomes more of a problem when you are considering individuals (particularly those with more muscle), but then it is also more feasible when working with an individual person to use more accurate methods for measuring body fat e.g. with calipers.

I gave this a thumbs down because of the emphasis on "fast food". I agree fast food isn't blameless, but obesity is almost certainly caused by excess fructose (sugar) and excess carbohydrates in a diet causing insulin resistance. Lack of fibre is also a significant contributing factor. Fast food fits into this category, but so too do about 80% of packaged foods - which have a high usage rate on remote islands. Certain populations are more susceptible due to their particular genetic make up. Most likely an evolutionary adaptation to a general lack of carbohydrates in their historical diets. Yes I agree, fast food isn't great, but blaming (just) fast food isn't going to help people solve the problem.

There many obesity in Middle east like Saudi Arabia ,Egypt, Qatar,UAE, and ku(Weight) from many reasons 1- we eat rice every day by 1-2 times , the rise is healthy but in middle east we But a lot of oil when we cook it . 2- we are love the fast-food restaurant, because it’s delicious and much cheaper than traditional restaurants. 3. We don’t eat enough fruit and vegetables . And in the same time we eat a meat and milk and fast food every day . 4- we eat a lot of meals that it has a lot of calories like kebab, kubba, doner, kabsa ( a rice with meat) , and kushary Note: I,m sorry if there are many mistakes in my writing because I’m from Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦.

Don't worry about it. At least you are trying. That's the only way to get better at something. Keep learning and practicing. As for your statement, it is understandable. It is hard to grow healthier foods like many fruits and veggies in the middle east, although that is getting slowly fixed by water projects to help improve the situation. So in the future, the lifestyle there can be healthier. Of course, things like that take time, when you've been living like that for so long. Things don't change over night. It just takes time, is all.

Lord Poppy, For American's that is true, we have very diverse options. But in some of these nations, they don't have such luxuries or cannot afford them if they exist.

It's not even true for Americans as the number of workers on minimum wage (de-facto poor) is huge

They can't buy vegetables. They're too expensive to ship in, for the average person to buy. And the stuff the does get shipped is rotten by the time it gets there.

ゲ-イタ 科学者 actually to be fit/healthy you want at least 30 min of cardio a day.
@Laserkitten
@Laserkitten 7 жыл бұрын
ゲ-イタ 科学者 45 minutes of cardio is a great amount for fat burning, and how don't you exercise at least 17 minutes, it can even be a nice stroll instead of a intense run or swim.
@GatorScientist

+Laser kitten ~ It was a joke (based on the comment of Americans averaging 17 minutes of exercise) and I do workout 5 days a week in the pool at the Wellness Center. I may be a 100% disabled Vet, but I would bet I get more exercise than most. If I didn't do at least a little following an active lifestyle I would balloon up to 300 lbs overnight. You can't do 22 yrs active followed by nearly a decade as a naval weapons engineer and just stop (although I have seen a few at the VA that did which is sad).

ゲ-イタ 科学者 I was just saying since I just find it impossible to not do the exercise, well it's great to see people with their own ways to keep in shape and swimming is one of the best ways to stay in or get in shape. funny joke though, even if it made me think about how people actually aren't able to get 17 minutes of exercise due to how hard it is for their weight, which is kinda depressing to think about.

I have travelled a lot and many foriegners think that all American food is bad. While, yes, FAST FOOD in America is horrible, our local cuisine is very healthy. In texas, we eat sauteed Nopal with onion and garlic. It is healthy. Just avoid the drive thru.

It is one of my favorites!!! It's cactus that is de-thorned, boiled with salt til soft like a bell pepper. Then, I sautee it in olive oil with garlic and onions until a light brown. Then I serve with chilies, cumin, salt, pepper, lime juice, and cilantro. In South Texas, we share a lot of cuisine with northern Mexico because we were once a part of Mexico and settled by the Spanish. North of San Antonio or Austin, few know what it is. Thank you Keith for letting me share!!!

ball keith yeah, it seems like there is a culinary change North of the Hill Country. I lived in Austin once and the Hill Country was more German and Czech, except for Victoria, Texas that has a lot of Germans. I rarely find a kolache here in Galveston.

Don't Fear The Reaper that is why they do statistics in per 100000. so if you want to do whole numbers then there are more fit people in the US than in Canada and Russia and the UK and almost all those other countries. using whole numbers you can stretch the facts anyway you want to.

When we visited all around the Samoan archipelago, the difference in body size between the territory of American Samoa and those in the independent country of Samoa was noticeable. In Samoa you'd actually see some women that fit the petite Tahitian stereotype and most people walked to their jobs or to market--sometimes miles away. Not so in American Samoa as they drove around in the same big pickup trucks & SUVs like in the US. Also of note was that American Samoans preferred playing US football in which sheer size is an asset, whereas folks in independent Samoa liked Rugby which tends to have better muscle tone & conditioning. So the body size for Samoans (and where they live) gets bigger in this order: Samoa>American Samoa>Hawaii>California.

I was told that in some islands Spam was the closest thing to the taste of "long pig" that former cannibal warriors could find, and they took to it enthusiastically. Also, in the Hawaiian Islands, anyone who was used to eating poi thought spam was the greatest thing on earth! Spam led the charge for crap food like McDonald's.
