There are many great cities out there to live in, but there are also some you would rather stay away from. Some are obvious. They’re known for simply having high homicide rates, or perhaps less than great water quality. However, there are also some cities out there that are so bad at certain things, that they would be absolutely horrific, and almost impossible for most people to stand living in. And yet, despite the everyday horrors, some people manage to live in these cities their entire lives, and find a measure of enjoyment in the world around them.

A friend of mine visited there right about the same time of the economic collapse (around 2008-2009). People were fleeing and abandoning their possessions. There were huge amounts of exotic cars abandoned at the airport. This is because the UAE still has debtors' prisons.

Dubai is crazy. I was there seven or eight years ago and I was almost arrested because I did not have the proper attire at the beach. I was simply dressed in jeans and a long sleeves shirt, since I had recently arrived from Munich. The excuse the undercover cop gave me was that I could be carrying drugs or weapons. Fortunately nothing happened, but you would think the more clothes you have on would be better in a country like that.

This is why I would never visit any country under Islamic law. Many of their laws aren't even dictated by the Qu'ran, but by the government. Fully dressed and still get questioned? Oh, maybe ur hiding drugs? Any excuse to harass women. If there were drugs, it's likely from their land. Maybe a burqa would've been better. Oh, wait..a non Muslim woman wearing one would probably be considered to be insulting to Islam, they'll find an excuse to arrest anyone who is not from their country.

Why is everybody scared of Dubai??? I live near Dubai and it is as safe as any city and extremely modern. You can’t say you don’t want to come to Dubai because it is in desert with a few skyscrapers. First of all, Dubai is leading the world skyscraper construction and secondly, LA was also built on a desert and LA has a few skyscrapers. It is wrong to judge a place because of their religion or geography (especially religion).

You can retire at age 50, but with the horrible air quality, you'd be lucky to live past age 55. 2) Detroit, Michigan. It has a 70% unsolved murder rate. A fourth of its houses are abandoned, making them ideal places to hide the bodies.

Concerning the city in Mexico: Even if you don't have the money to leave- just do it! I did. What I did was left the dangerous city for my families safety, became homeless for a 1/2 year, got an address from one of those PO Box places, saved every penny I could though any kind of work I could fine and recycling, we ate like crap for a while but... Eventually, I was able to save up enough for a crappy apartment in the most ghetto part of town. Once I established a place to live I worked on getting a steady job and so on. I did this as a single Mom w/2 kids. It can be done, just takes the will to want a better life. My kids are now grown and appreciate the hard work I did on their behalf. You don't need to leave your home country to make a better life, just a new city with new opportunities.

It also sounded to me like both those issues are historical and seem to have burnt out. I was most intrigued by the waste management problem cities in Nigeria and India. Those are problems that can be solved and maybe some kind of international project can offer help. Cleaning up can be a profitable business for someone if they're willing to take it on and can get government buy in to encourage citizen participation.

I have a friend who lives in Mumbai. That city could really benefit by building massive recycling centers. Not only would much of their waste be recycled into new products, but these centers would employ thousands of unskilled workers who are currently unemployed. Additionally, much of their waste is compostable, which would benefit public parks and gardens. Perhaps poor families could have kitchen gardens in places where garbage was dumped historically?

As a former resident of Mumbai and a person who loves the place, I will have to agree with the comment above. We have so many ways to cure the problems we are facing, but corruption, hooliganism and the sheer not-my-backyard attitude always dampens the work effort. Add to that the monumental rate at which the city and it's population is growing, only worsens the situation.

What Rio de Janeiro needs to ask is why are there so many homeless children??? Are the parents or parent just abandoning them?? Do they not have orphanages??? Not that an orphanage would be great, but they would know they will receive 3 meals a day, an education, and a bed every night. This is absolutely horrible, especially because so many Latin populations are Roman Catholic. I cannot remember off the top of my head what book and verse in the Bible that says it, but it states that a community should always feed and take care of the widows and orphans..... Wake up Rio!!!!!!!

No birth control ( because heavily Roman Catholic), widespread desperate poverty, and high numbers of people living in slums with little/no sanitation. That's a recipe for churning out lots of children before dying horribly from preventable diseases and leaving those children orphaned.

The problem with Rio goes much deeper than what is mentioned in the video. I do respect his opinion but it is biased. Rio is a bankrupt city within a bankrupt state (of the same name), and I mean morally and financially broken, corrupt to the core of it's institutions and values (with a few exceptions), universities filled with communists whose single preoccupation is to brainwash future generations, get money from government and use drugs. The downfall started with a communist governor (Leonel Brizola) during the 80's and seems to have no end in sight. It's a failed city and a failed state. To blame the police for the crimes committed is like blaming the rope for the hanging. It's just a shallow and biased point of view. By the way, I am Brazilian.

So, I grew up in London and also live here now. I'm also pretty knowledgeable about crime stats. London is boring and has a small town mentality and is very conservative in it's attitude. The crime has always been lower than average per capita than most Canadian cities, which means much lower than US cities. The only crime problem London ever really had was home break-ins. The serial killer thing was completely hidden from the citizens of London until just a few years ago. London has always averaged between 0 and 10 murders per year which is very low for a city of 400,000 people. London is actually a beautiful city and is know for an abundance of trees. It's nickname is The Forest City. My theory as to why the serial killers, is the fact that it is very close to 3 US border crossings so maybe it was Americans fleeing the law and settling here.

Your videos are, indeed, very interesting. I really enjoy them. My very unique remark refers to how fast you speak. Maybe, your messages are more understandable if you speak a little slower. Kind regards, José / Brazil.

You call Cleveland, Ohio a "fairly large city, and London, Ontario "a small, unassuming town"...both have virtually the same population (approx 385,000 for each, give or take)

He warned during he intro that some places were obvious to everyone and wouldn't be mentioned. Port Au Prince comes readily to mind as does Port Moresby. I also wouldn't recommend a late-night stroll in Kingston, Jamaica.

@@canadiankaren2426 yikes Hamilton Ontario is wayyyy dirtier. London has like 300 parks or something like that & Trees everywhere which makes it really pretty and peaceful. Called the forest city for a reason ;) The dirty part is the crack heads but hamilton has more of those. Hamilton is trashy... literally.. trash everywhere. I would not want to live there. Although being the home of Tim Horton is pretty cool!

Why would a past history of people being murdered by psychopaths in the town or city you live in make it more “interesting” to you? Just curious. That perspective seems a bit detached and dispassionate. Those people who were killed must have suffered horribly and been in abject terror during their last moments on this earth when they knew they were going to die at the hands of an inhuman deranged individual with no compassion, mercy or conscience. Is it “interesting “ from your perspective because none of those victims were related to you in any way? So their horrible deaths are not an issue for you?

The world is inperfect, dont expect no crime, no racism, no sexism, there is war and there is no way to change, japan is a very friendly country yet there is a suicide forest, europe is wealthy but there is also poverty, dont expect them to live how you want them to live, they live how THEY want to live, they dont have the same culture, the same religion nor the same language, and back to the first line, the world is imperfect
