I just read "A Man named Ove" by Fredrick Backman. It was amazing! His writing does feel like these are real people. Such a great author. I want to read "Anxious People" next. Heard it is wonderful. I will have to read "Beartown"

Wow!!! You have sold me on Imaginary Friend, Beartown and I’ll Give You the Sun (I won’t come after you though if I don’t like them) 😇 I think my favourite contemporary/thriller/horror novels have to be The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by TJR, The One by John Marrs and Final Girls by Riley Sager, and NOS4R2 by Joe Hill. Loved this video and love your enthusiasm! 🤗💜

Well my bday month is next month so I might just add these books on to my wishlist and hint to my family and friends 😅😇 yes NOS4R2 has a brilliant chase throughout, the stakes are high, there are some messed up characters in it and it is incredibly creepy! I remember that if I read it right before I went to bed, I had pretty vivid nightmares! 😬 I’m hoping you don’t get them!! ☹️💜

Was not a fan of final girls at all :( I had high expectations so I really wanted to love it, but it wasn’t scary enough 🤦‍♀️. I loved Kin by Kealan Patrick Burke. It is a sole survivor of a killing type situation and everything I wanted final girls to be. I highly recommend it, especially if you like final girls. It’s scarier.

I have read two of your top three books. I read Imaginary Friend and really liked it. I just recently read Room because a prompt came up in the Jeopardy game that my Facebook book club is playing this month. I had to pick a book with a white cover with no image. So, I found Room. I am so glad I found it and read it because I loved it! I listened to it on audio while following along in the Kindle book. The audiobook is so good too because it is a child's voice all the way through. It was so good seeing the world through the little boy's eyes. I don't usually reread books but I feel this is one that I will definitely reread.

I'm not really a SFF reader so I really appreciated this list! My sister just finished both of the Beartown books and has been pushing that I read them, and seeing Beartown on here has definitely pushed it towards the top of my list! Kesara is wonderful! I’ve read and enjoyed almost all of these books. The Heart’s Invisible Furies is one of my all time favorites and Room makes such an impact. I was in love with Alaska before The Great Alone, but it made my love for it grow. Gone Girl broke the mold in the thriller genre. I have Imaginary Friend on my shelf. I’m saving it for October. You’ve sold me on I’ll Give You the Sun; however, I keep resisting Daisy Jones, and I think it’s because of the cover. I hate when actual people are pictured on covers rather than illustrations. *The Hearts Invisible Fury* is STILL on my TBR. I keep getting distracted with other books! You've got a few of my favorites too: *The Nightingale, Where the Crawdads Sing, and Daisy Jones & the Six* . My NEW favorite book of all-time is *The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo* . I thought it was BRILLIANT. Totally checked off all the boxes for me: Old Hollywood, LGBTQ rep, Twist I didn't see coming, "Forbidden" love, Heartbreak, Strong females, etc.... it just has it all 💚 Before that, *Atlas Shrugged* was my favorite. Dagny Taggart is still my favorite literary character. She is just the epitome of a STRONG, INTELLIGENT female ❤️

This opening was relatable. I've been playing around with recording videos, using a similar style mic. My issue is that I clip it on, but don't plug the jack into my phone. 😐 The Great Alone is sitting on my shelf, and I know I'm going to love it. But I haven't felt up for that intense of a read since...well, sometime around March. 😬😂 You might check out Only Child by Rhiannon Navin. I haven't read The Room but it sounds similarly done. It's told from the perspective of a young boy after his family is impacted by a school shooting. Heavy, but very well done.

Thanks for another great list Jessie. I added a few of these to my want to read list and even own a couple already which I haven't started yet. Those being Where the Crawdads Sing and The Nightingale. Really interested in Bear Town and The Great Alone. Actually, this entire list sounds interesting. I'm not sure if I want to read Room or not. I saw the movie and it was so heart wrenching I don't know if I want to relive it. From what you said, though, the book is so good it really deserves to be read. Also, one quick question. Would it be worth my time to read Gone Girl if I've already seen the movie and it's fresh in my memory? I mean, already knowing the twists, turns and reveals to a suspense/thriller kinda takes away the suspense and mystery that make these types of stories so engaging. Thanks again Jessie. You have a great channel.

So glad you also love those two books!! 😄 yeah Room is a tough one, it’s heavy, but I like that it ends hopeful! ❤️ Hmm I’m not sure on Gone Girl! My original comment is from a while ago but I did end up reading Bear Town, and liked it a lot. Tore through it in a few days.(couldn't put it down) Great story, characters, dialogue, setting and atmosphere. The only issue I had with it was the amount of exposition. Not the opening exposition, which I understand was needed and actually enjoyed quite a bit, but the exposition throughout the rest of the book which remained heavy at times. Even that, though, wasn't too bad since it was well written. Other than that, it was a knock-out. It now ranks highly on my list of contemporary books. Thanks again for this list! And as far as great contemporary novels go, my #1 is To Kill a Mockingbird. If this is one you still have yet to read, I can't recommend it enough.

These were all great recs, they're all on my tbr! Question for Bear Town: I tend to try to stay away from books that discuss rape/sexual assault heavily since it's a trigger for me, does this book talk about it heavily or in detail? Because I would LOVE to read it, sounds so intriguing!
@JessieMaeBooks
@JessieMaeBooks 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it does go into detail on the rape scene, it’s not gruesome, but it’s disturbing. I thought the book handled it extremely well, but yes, I would proceed with caution if this is a trigger. The focus of the book after that scene is very much the town’s reaction to it and the repercussions for everyone involved.

I think my 3 favorite books of all time would be The Shadow of the Wind, The Golden Compass, and Anne of Green Gables. I’m going to cheat and add an honorable mention to the Golem and the Jinni.

I feel like the only one in the world who doesn't like the books by Gillian Flynn. Read Gone, Girl and Dark Places, but I didn't get hooked or got impressed. :/

Girl....have you not read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo? Because if you haven't..you need to. I don't know how that book doesn't end up in everyone's top 10. If you want characters that feel very real, that is one of the best books I have ever read

I highly recommend "The Snow Child" by Eowyn Ivey. It takes place in 1920s Alaska with some fantasy-like elements. Its really good!
