One of the big reasons because these artists fell off the map is because they "don't fit" with what the music industry is about nowadays. For example many of them sing pop/rock songs and that music genre seems to be fading off the commercial charts because of the media, they just want a certain music genre and artists to be commercially on top, and they just want people to listen to what they want. Only true fans are the only ones who listen to those faded artists. One example is Avril Lavigne, she was BIG in the 2000s with her punk rock music, even though she haven't "fell off the map". She can only adapt to what the music industry is looking for nowadays or she can keep doing what she loves to do and only be listened by fans.

These women are suffering, because the industry has decided that looks should be more important than original creativity, and vocal talent. The music industry doesn't care for quality music anymore. I freaking agree! All these artist have songs that’ll last my entire lifetime! Some of the songs now aren’t made with the same intent for the most part. Most are very time sensitive. When you look back you question why. None of these artist give me that feeling at all. And to put alanis up there at the top is shameful! That’s a living legend right there. Beyoncé even gave her props for what she’s done for females in music. How dare you shade her like that. They has hits after hits after hits. They specifically said that this list was not about 1 hit wonders. But I do agree, I think Sheryl’s 90’s music was so good and it’s hard for her to even top it. Besides, her earlier music earns her enough to support any music style she wants to pursue now. Kinda like Alamo’s Morrisette’s JLP album. Alanis knows she will never top that, nor should she try. But she will forever be able to eat off of that album! ☺️

Jessica Simpson? Sara Barellis? Christina Milian? Joss Stone? Monica? Nelly Furtado? Amerie? Tamia? Ciara? Natalie Imbruglia? Keyshia Cole? Brandy should have made the list, she was the princess of R&B in the late 90's. Some listed were no where near as famous as Brandy was. #10 - Vanessa Carlton - Poor single choices and lack of promo killed her career. #09 - Jewel - The Intuition era alienated her core folky base. And took too long to release a follow up and never recovered. Then she got bored and tried country and kids music. #08 - Sherly Crow - In her 50s and slowed down on her own to raise her son. She had her heyday and is moving on. #07 - Natasha Bedingfield - Record label battles screwed her own. 3rd album flopped and she never recovered. #06 - Anastacia - Never hit in big in USA but is huge in Europe. Health issues slowed her roll. #05 - Ashanti - IMO, breaking away from Def Jam got her blacklisted. #04 - Another fucked over by her record label. #03 - Dido - Bowed out of the limelight on her own. "White Flag" is one of the best songs of 2003! #02 - LeAnn Rimes - Scandals killed her career. Scandals are a no-no in country music. #01 - Alanis - Alanis also bowed out of the limelight on her own.

Most of the people on this list are true artists who stuck to the music they loved. With "artists" today, it's less about the music and more about the money. That is the problem with the industry and why you always see people complain about the mainstream music coming out. The artists on this list were songwriters, musicians, vocalists, and so much more. Now all you have are a bunch of brain dead celebrities who buy popular hits from real songwriters, so they can record them and stay relevant as long as possible. It's actually really sad and makes me miss the 90's and early 00's.

I'm surprised that Avril Lavigne wasn't on here. However, I will say this about Jordin Sparks. The reason why she fell off the map is because her record label was very stubborn on her making another album especially since she wanted to make her own songs. It took years for her to finally get out of all of that and she recently got a new album out that's really good. I just hope that she makes a big comeback someday because it's really unfair for her that that stupid record label that she was once with pretty much took all of that away from her. :(

***** That makes me thrilled for I myself am a huge Avril Lavigne fan. :) It's just that I think back to when she used to be everywhere back in the early 2000's, but now I barely hear her music on the radio and see her on the magazines like I used too back then. But, I still love her to death and want to follow her. :)

I understand your point of view, but it’s just how it is. When referring to artists, so to people who are known to the large public, this term is correct. There will always be people who will feel offended by such statements, but it’s a fact. And no, not everybody is rellevant, no matter about what industry we’re talking about. I know it dosen’t sound good, but it’s also reality

the entertainment arena is dog eat dog and very fickle...you have to constantly be on the grind...you also must have equal talent/gift for choosing the correct songs and producers to work with...in the lat 80's/early 90's was the best time to break into music...now..not at all...the industry is influx and because prior to the internet...music companies only concentrated on one good song to push an album and folks had to buy an entire album just to hear one song....then by the 80's everything changed...you now needed a video to assist with pushing the song...that cld easly run into millions...then once the ipod was introduced...it fucked up the whole game because now you were no longer forced to buy an entire album to get one song...you could spend a buck n just dwn load the song/s you liked....labels are no longer willing to spend millions on M&P for fear of not recouping that mny....then in 2013 beyonce totally flipped the script cause she dropped an album that went platinum in a month absent of any M&P...a label's dream..drake followed suit with the same success....ashanti had a good run until the feds shut down murder inc....ciara...had a short run but a good one...i am shocked she has not been dropped by her label because her last few albums have done nothin.....

Brandy shouldn't be on the list. She didn't fall off. She just had a tour this year. She's not at the height of her career because she's almost 40 and has kids. She started super young and she's already done it all. That's not falling off. That's called Successful and Accomplished. Who stays at the top forever? No one. Some of the other people deserve to be on the list because they came and were super hot for a short period and then disappeared. Brandy's been around for like 25 years. She definitely should not be grouped with the other people in this video.

Most artists only have a couple of albums in them. After five years, most artists are finished. Only significantly greater artists are up for a second five-year stint. And fifteen years puts you in the company of artists like Madonna, The Rolling Stones and U2. In the first five years, you express your youthful vitality, the songs that have been in you all your life, so to say. After that, you have to understand the history of music and your own aging process. That's beyond many artists who want to remain youthful and vital forever.
@Domino13334

Yes this is how it works. No one can be on the very top forever and that is quiet good that the very top changes after 5-10 years. The artists however can still make good profit. What was once 5-10 times platinum now is 1-2 times platinum or gold. The big bucks are made, you can still tour and go into talk shows when releasing new work. Just you are not the moment anymore on the very top.

There were various issues why these beloved musicians were unfairly robbed of much more success in their careers. First starters, the issue of pirating in the mid/late 2000s; so many illegal downloads and peer-to-peer file sharing also played a factor in a lot of these young ladies' records sales. Many people at the time found it convenient to download the song freely rather than purchasing it for a simple $0.99 price on iTunes. Number two, the industry sound. Towards the close of the 2000s, a new sound was infiltrating mainstream music: autotune, indie, heavy trap and deep dubstep. While we seen these type of subgenres play out successfully in earlier years by hitmakers like Young Jeezy, Missy Elliott & Timbaland, it was the ignorant industry's decision to tailor more "force fed" garbage into radio streams and eventually knock R&B/pop friendly content out the box and into the underrated zone. Since then, music has been in a tiring rerun of trap/dubstep sounds which is probably why we haven't been getting a high quality record from the aforementioned artists because their once big time producers were axed by the industry. When it was unearthed in 2007 that Soulja Boy produced the #1 chart topper "Crank That" strictly off easy-to-download-and-use software, the industry decided to follow his formula and axe big name producers to "save more money" and employ artists who could produce hits on their own or with little to no cost, that could explain why the genres are so redundant as of lately. Number three, the axing of female musicians. By the time the late 2000s rolled in we began seeing once successful female musicians fall into obscurity due to labels putting them on the backburner to "save even more money" in wake of the economic collapse; this meant that if you were a bonafide hitmaker during your day you better bring your A-game because whatever dolled up promo you'll be getting at the time will be your first and only exposure until more coins start coming in from the pubic; of course thing #1 (file-to-file sharing) had a negative effect on that resulting in numerous female hitmakers like Ashanti, Ciara, Nivea, Dream, JoJo, Stacie Orrico, Blaque, Nicole Wray, Avril Lavigne, Norah Jones, Fefe Dobson, Nelly Furtado, Brooke Valetine, etc. to be held back or shelved repeatedly by the industry (in contrast where a male musician was likely to survive further for inexpensive requests like a mic and white-tee, whereas a female musician needed glam, makeup, nifty choreography and become the "whole package" to at least scrape some attention). It sucks because they all could have still dropped more hits in their prime & even today had the aforementioned scenarios got out of the way. It was bad timing, industry politics and the system's ignorant say of "what saved money" to keep the business afloat. Sad.

What about Lisa Loeb, Liz Phair, Bjork, Monica, Meredith Brooks, Natalie Imbruglia, JOAN OSBORNE, Paula Cole, Donna Lewis, Sophie B. Hawkins, and Fiona Apple???? And Sarah MacLachlan was just an honorable mention? Seriously, you need another list for this category, because there were so many singers you left out.

Ciara's last album actually put her back on the map, so it would be hard to say she fell off. Same with Brandy's 2/11, but I guess they're also taking into account record sales and promotion at which case, Brandy's label didn't heavily promote her like Ciara is continually getting. Else, it would make sense for her to be on it.

Her last album flopped hardcore. Ciara should be on this list she fell off after The Evolution, which only sold a little over 1 million copies. She hasn't had a platinum or gold album since.

The reason why they are "irrelevant" is because the today's singers care more about fame and constantly being in the news (for whatever reason) rather than focusing on music. They constantly do stupid things in the open to get the media's attention. Back in the day, singers tried to stay away from the media and the only time they were in it was when they actually got caught. Prime examples: Justin Beiber, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, etc. The ladies in this video were actual singers and I really love Ashanti. She was truly the Princess of R&B and Hip-Hop
