Sesshomaru's smile is actually the sign of some catastrophe happening. Sometimes to him like in episode 35 where he is nearly killed by Inuyasha, sometimes to the whole world. I'm not quite sure whether he smiled in the 2nd movie in which the time was frozen or in the 3rd movie in which the sword Sounga nearly dragged the world of the living into the underworod.

At series end Rin goes to live with old Kaeda for several years, and then returns to them as an adult, eventually becoming Sesshoumaru wife. This is implied in Yashahime but not fully discussed. Rumiko Takahashi stated that Jaken was Rin's 'father figure' he was the one actually playing games with her and scolding her when she misbehaved and eating meals with her and protecting her, he's supposed to be the reluctant father figure.
