Can confirm, the colorization is great, and really adds a lot to the game for me. Metroid II definitely belongs in a Top 10. Loved the 3DS remake, but it really loses the atmosphere. That TV situation you described was common enough back in the day and is lost on some who didn't experience it. That was an excellent reason to get a Game Boy. And it was probably easier than holding out for a TV considering the price difference. Sounds like Golf was a happy accident. Thanks to a chance encounter with NES Open Golf, I came to realize just how fun golf could be when translated into a video game. I've been a fan of golf video games since, though I prefer them with a bit of silliness or arcade energy, so things like Mario Golf, Hot Shots Golf, and Turf Masters are my style. But I totally agree that the sport of golf can be a great video-game experience. I always loved Super Mario Land. I loved the look and feel of it back in the day, and still appreciate it and play it fairly regularly. Gargoyle's Quest is the Game Boy game that really captured my imagination when I saw it in magazines and is the game I wanted most before I got the Game Boy. It didn't disappoint either, but it was tough to make progress at first. Ninja Gaiden Shadow ended up being a continuation of two properties at the same time as you mentioned. Shadow of the Ninja may not have been well known, but is a great ninja game in its own right. I really should look into playing the Game Boy game. This was an excellent video and a very good list. Great work.

I would have included such great titles as Zelda Link’s Awakening, Nemesis, Kirby’s Dream Land, Mario Land 2, TMNT... Maybe you should’ve had a ‘top 20’ list.

The only time I have ever telephoned a Nintendo help line was during my first playthrough of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. I was entranced!

Great video. Playing these games on the big screen through emulation Ive really come to appreciate how many awesome games are on the GB. Alot of the mid and later titles are basically NES quality games.

It's really refreshing to see a Game Boy top 10 that doesn't include Pokemon. I was as into the series as much as anyone but every damn list I've seen has Pokemon in or near the top spot.

Funnily enough my first Mario game was a C-64 port, followed by the GameBoy game and Super Mario Bros 2 on the NES (which I played at a friends since I didn't have an NES). I always wondered as a kid why the Super Mario Brothers Super Show on TV was so vastly different to the games I knew. Turns out I only knew the weird entries in the series and not the real mainline games. XD

Definitely chose the right #1. When I got my Gameboy that & Tetris were all I had. Best believe I mastered Belmont's Revenge inside & out. Used to finish it just to hear the amazing end theme. I played it last year on the Castlevania Collection, it still absolutely holds up as one of the best games in the series.

Final Fantasy Adventure (the first game in the Secret of Mana series), Final Fantasy Legend I & II (Saga Frontier series), Mega Man IV, Link's Awakening, and Metroid II were my absolute favorites on the old brick. I had many Game Boys over the years. The original one I got Christmas of 89 died from water damage when Hurricane Andrew tore up the south.

Different people, different experiences. I'm a bit younger, I was only 5 in 1989, but I had a Game Boy. Not in order, but top 10 games on my list would be: -Zelda: Link's Awakening (my favorite Zelda game to this day) -Kirby's Dream Land 2 -Super Mario Land 2 -Pokémon (Red/Blue/Yellow) -Kirby's Pinball Land -Metroid 2 (below these others, but also great) I also had a golf game, Jack Nicholas Golf, that my dad got for himself but never played. Same experience, I played it to death and got into golf. I never owned any myself, but the Donkey Kong Land games are also excellent games.

My pops got this two game pack (had no traditional box but Qix and Solar striker were both 1990 games sold for 40 total CAD). GB titles were 40 CAD new and 30 CAD as a player choice title in the 90s for the most part. My pops LOVES qix. So we got a spave shooter to play (beat it when I was 15 at the summer cottage).

Ah yes the gold old Gameboy. My entry in the gaming world in 1991 and my only gaming machine I owned for many years. My first own home console I owned was the n64 in 1997. Had many nice memories on the system. It had a nice Robocop, Batman and Turtles games. Super Mario Land and Probotector was als neat.

Pretty good list, would def add turtles radical rescue. If u havent played it, its basically a tmnt metroid game. Very happy to see u included Ninja Gaiden, its my fav for the system.

I thought Donkey Kong on Game Boy was a straight port until he got back up from the collapsed construction site. Then I did a double-take.

Good list, we overlap quite a bit there. I would add Links Awakening, Mario Land 2 and Turtles 3.

Ninja Gaiden Shadow is amazing. Shadow of the Ninja meets Ninja Gaiden, you can't go wrong. The homing spread gun is insane on Operation C.
