One that was really bad was Ultima Forever: Quest of the Avatar, it wasn't enough that EA had already killed one of the best RPG series of all time, they had to dig up it's corpse and reanimate it so that they could kill it again.

+NoodleArms seriously, KI's probably one of the better fighting games of recent years, probably the most balanced, and has the best netcode so far. mediocre? not even.. balance is one of the main things the devs wanted to preserve. plus the "buy each fighter for $5" isn't even a bad model. it's there for people who may not have $20-40 to drop on the game. The mindset behind that is: what if you only wanted to play one or a few specific characters? why buy the whole roster then? i spent $80 on it ($40 for each season ultra edition) so i can have the original KI and KI2 on my xbox. really for novelty reasons lol. there's so much more we could get into this topic, but i'm going to drop it to save the frustration

In defense of PvZ2 the original game wasn't exactly a walk in the park either. In this one you just have less to work with (given that you haven't bought the premium plants) meaning the winning combination is usually a bit easier to find, seeing how you don't have to experiment with 50 different plants.

Sorry but you are wrong about Killer Instinct. Buying a character individually causes the price of the other characters to go down. Its become the same price if you buy it all at once or one at a time. The Free version has been called a demo by Microsoft and is treated by them as such. It doesn't count for this list.

I dont really get why Tekken Revolution is in the mentions. Its great Tekken multiplayer with a good varied supply of the series characters. The only thing available to purchase thats only possibly necessary is an unlock for a locked characters, who you dont even need to buy as you will unlock them over time just playing the game. Tokens restock pretty quickly and the rest of the items to buy are mostly cosmetic changes. Besides some presence of spammers in lower levels, which are easy to counter, the playerbase is pretty solid as well

tbh, I've been playing Plants vs Zombies 2 from the launch up untill now. I've never spent a coin on this game nor I ever felt need to use any of the new power ups (not talking about plant food - theese I use only when they are dropped by zombies). I've never spen time grinding in this game, just breezed through the levels, maybe having mild problems at water oriented levels since I hate them. But yeah it is possible to play this game and enjoy it without the need to pay the money

+Turbo 86 Still if someone has a problem with them, then there are ways to prevent them from playing and ending up costing others.And one would be simply to not give them a device that would allow them or place/activate a block of some short. Course they end up letting do whatever they want as long as the kid leaves them alone for a time. As for complaining, there will always be someone doing so. If a person doesn't like how a free game turns out in the end they could, if they choose to, stop playing it or find another game to play. The good news however is that soul calibur lost swords will end their service on the end of September. It means we can no longer see this rubbish game and wait for SC6 to come out in the future. I don't really think Killer Instinct belongs on this list, it's only $20 for all the characters (at least at launch it was) and its not free to play for the reasons most games are, it rotates the free character so you can try them all out and when you find one you like you pay $5 get the character and then you don't even have to pay for anything else, saving you $15. I'm not like pissed off that its on the list or anything I just think you're giving people the wrong idea about the game, if that all makes sense?

If anything they did players a favor (even at launch) by giving them access to all of the games features including online play for no price to try out and see if they liked it but oh no because you have to pay for each character it's bad. Regarding Killer Instinct, it is not even nearly as bad as other games on this list. The F2P was more of a demo than a promised full game. The full game was sold like any other game would be and for much cheaper than common full releases (about $30). Compared to other games you put on the list, which get you to spend mass amounts of money on timers, KI is really not deserving of a place here. Maybe do a bit more research next time.

***** Im not gonna disagree that it might have been a good thing for some games, and you make some great points, that make a lot of sense. If done right, and it dont become pay2win games, free to play is a nice consept. You can buy stuff like DLCs for a standalone game. The standard game for the players that doesnt have any money, just have to be fun, and not like candy crush or Roller Coaster 4, that needs 100$ to be even close to "fun". For those money you could buy all the old RC games, and the mass effect trilogy... Of cause some F2P are great. League has done well with the free to play way, and it does it the right way. Make a fun standalone gameplay, with no advantages to be bought from a store. Only skins and new characters. Perfect ideal for a good free 2 play :D Im not saying all are bad, or that it hasnt been a compleatly bad thing. What im trying to say is that it in my opinion is the majority that are bad cashgrabs.

i need to say something about pvz2, i beat the entire game without spending a cent, the difficulty made it refreshing as pvz1 was WAY to easy tbh,the premium plants, i admit are bullshit although pop cap are making more of them gem plants (witch u can get for free) personally i love the game, the difficulty is nice and only after i beat the game did i buy 1 plant also, you dont have to grind for new worlds anymore, they changed that thankfually

I really don't agree with your choice of Dungeon Keeper mobile being completly unplayable unless you pay money. I know a lot of you tubers like boogie were there launch date, played it with high expectations, but were very unhappy with the wait times. But isn't that the thing with all "build your own city(in this case dungeon)" type games? it's meant to be checked on every day for a few minutes to harvest gold, rocks, get 10 free gems from raids and complete a few quests. I don't know what it was like on launch but it is significantly changed to the point where after 2 months of casually checking up on the progress, I have unlocked everything in the game for free! I'm in one of the top 50 guilds (taking third or 4th several times in past tournaments), unlocked all but 2 immortals, unlocked all but 1 imp for mining, and have a dungeon heart lv 7. I really enjoy this game and I while it is "tainted" for the terrible start so many years ago, it's evolved into a playable game, one which you can play for free ( u just need patience, time, and effort to check every day). Also, no citation for stealing Dan Bull's rap for practical the entire review? really DICK move, I mean really "KZbin channel: EA mobile games" WTF is that shit? if he weren't too sick from having surgery twice, he should sue your ass. Really sloppy work on that one, even the rest of the "game play" clips don't even look like they do now. if you don't link Dan Bull in the description I'm unsubbing, you're guy's work have been getting increasingly bias, uninformed, and unsophisticated.

It's interesting that you picture Pokémon Rumble World in this video, when the game actually is less "free to play" so much as it's "free to start". There's actually a pay cap on this game of roughly $30, at which point the game is practically fully unlocked. It's a good example of the model done right, as the same is still entirely playable without paying a penny, but it will be a test of patience as it becomes increasingly challenging to capture new pokémon without expanding your level selection.

Why does everyone hate on PvZ 2? I played the first one, loved it, but I like the second one more. I started playing it around May, so I don't know how the game was before, but since I got it I haven't paid a single penny. The only thing I've bought from the store was a Fire Pea Shooter, and I got it with gems, which I got by playing. You do realize the F2P KI was a demo for the game and is generally not considered a f2p game. Its a bundle. Play KI for free as a demo and you get all the features with 1 character rotations. Get the bundle and you basically get a brand spankin new fighting game that's actually critically acclaimed as a great fighting game.

You are very wrong about KI. Yes, its free, but if you want all the characters, you can pay, which in turn is like paying for the game you wanted to play. The KI scene is huge and there are thousands still playing. Not to mention Tournaments.

Killer Instinct has no place being here. The majority of people who play it say that it is a great fighting game so there's no issues with the gameplay. The $5 per character? Only for the first one. It costs $20 to get every character in a season (there's generally 8-9 per season) in one bundle, and if you buy them one at a time, the price for each goes down to the point where it ends up costing $20 for them all anyway. The idea being that if you only wanted one or two characters you didn't have to buy a roster full of characters you wanted nothing to do with as well but if you changed your mind later you weren't punished for that either. The free character was always meant to be rotated (once a week I believe) and hardly anyone remains who relies on that. It was solely a way of getting people to try the game if they were on the fence about it and make it easier to get more players. In other words, the game has a free to play option but the main meat comes from a regular one-time purchase that is a fair price. This is one of the rare cases where all the options presented to the player are actually fair and reasonable instead of exploitative.

For KI you can just buy the whole game for retail price. That's what I did. It's cheaper than buying individual characters and in theory, all 3 seasons equals a full retail priced game anyway.

actually realracing 3 changed there act, you can speed up a 4 hour fix withing less than 2 min. each a.d u get 2 watch removes time of the cooldown so you can race again

I think Squeenix got the message with All the Bravest. They tried it again with Record Keeper (getting help from an actual mobile specialising developer) and while it does have the micro-transactions, it is absolutely not pay-to-win.

At the very least the new KI's developers Double Helix were up front about it since Microsoft was shoving the damn thing into stores, so DH prioritize making the fighting engine worth a damn first then adding all the content they intended. Archeage. Definitely a game that should have fell on this list. "Free to play" until you run out of labor points which are your only means to do anything else besides quest. Did I mention you basically need to buy your way to any wealth, success, or higher status of which end game is essentially pay to win. Not to mention the fact that you would get banned for no reason because people would report anyone for botting even though it wasn't so and if you were afk during this you would be banned with no refund. Don't even make me mention the hackers who hacked almost everything you could do as a pay to play and ruined half the ingame content. Thanks Glyph.

Ehmmm i've played metal slug defense i can say that you dont need the transactions to upgrade the units or even buy them you just need to play missions in specific and know exactly what units you need. its all patience... KI has one of the better F2P models. You can buy the complete game for what, 15-30 for each half? And if you KNOW you only like 1-2 characters, you can buy just them. IDK if they do it now, but I always thought they should have weekly rotating free characters for people to try to see if they like them.

Tekken Revolution was one of the better examples of how to do free to play. Tokens recharge pretty fast, and it's not too expensive if you want to buy more. Only thing that kind of sucked is how long it takes to unlock characters (Doesn't really affect me since I main Mishima chars).

Next list you guys should make is 10 Games plagued by DLC. It really makes me sad that Dungeon Keeper and Roller Coaster got reduced to such garbage. Back in the days I used to play those franchises so much and even nowadays I couldn't resist buying Dungeon Keeper 2 and play it over and over. What about Ghost Recon? Ubisoft, after milking the shit out of Assassin's Creed, and forgetting about many of their still great franchises such as Beyond Good and Evil or Prince of Persia, they decided it was SMART to take the extremely realistic and amazing Ghost Recon franchise, and fuck it even more by making a free-2-play game. A game that, instead of the GIGANTIC ARENAS the original had in like, FUCKING 2000, it has cluster-fucks of maps which look like from Battlefield or CoD, extremely linear and straight forward, leaving no place for actual strategy. The game also forces players to buy stuff like grenades if you ever wanna use them, and it's INSANELY pay-2-win. Oh, and you know what's the best part of all of it? When they released the game, they were asking INSANE prices for "starter-packs", yet they didn't even bother to ACTUALLY FINISH IT. The game had FOUR MAPS. And I don't even know if they released more, but knowing Ubisoft, they probably didn't. That's the day I lost all hope in Ubisoft. They won't pull it off. They're becoming even worse than EA or Crapcom, and that's quite an achievement. Good thing that there's still people who play the original Ghost Recon with third party software. Way better than that piece of digital garbage.

Roller Coaster Tycoon Mobile outraged me, the original was the gateway video game for me and was a gateway into being big into amusement parks (as well as helping me form an opinion of what real-life parks are doing). But Roller Coaster Tycoon World looks to be pretty promising. Apparently the mobile game was filler until they could get the proper fourth game in the franchise, not sure how true that is but as there was a much longer gap between RCT2 and RCT3 and what the PAX demo had shown, there might have been some reason for that. So there's still some hope for RCT fans like myself.

Maybe it’s just a patch but PvZ2 is playable without paying. I’ve unlocked and beaten every world and unlocked many plants. All you gotta do is grind gems from daily challenges and stuff. More strategy than brute force is involved compared to the original which makes it seem like you need the premium plants to succeed, although they’re not actually all that good.

PVZ isn’t that bad.I mean if I didn’t have to pay for anything and got more then half of the worlds in order it shouldn’t be that bad. Also the worlds are addictive and because of the difficulty spike it make you want to try new plants and strategies to win. I do have to admit the first 2 worlds you unlock can be trial and error with your plants but when you get to later stages it gets a lot more fun. What are you guys favorite plant?

You know there's a lot of hate for this (understandably) but some (not many, but a few) have gotten it right. I think it'd be worth making a list devoted to those because sometimes it pays to point at positive examples and say "Hey, these guys got it right. If you've gotta do this then why not use them as an example?". This usually involves charging for aesthetic items or something else that doesn't actually damage gameplay (a lot of MMO's have done this, Tera comes to mind, though it does have an Elite account you could still play 24 hours a day on a free account and miss nothing) so players who enjoy the game can still help the company by either buying costumes or small bonuses but for the casual player they aren't being cut off from anything necessary. I guess the only bad part about such a list is as mentioned it would almost be entirely made up of MMO's.

There's a major misnomer here, these are pay to win, not free to play. A good F2P example would be Everquest 2, you access to pretty much the entire game in the free state. The only things you can't do are like, sending mail, access to legendary or higher equipment and master spells. If most of these F2P games followed this model you'd see a lot less fuss when a game went that route.

Killer Instinct is the only entry I don't think deserves to be on this list. You could buy all the Season One roster for $20, and given that a fighting game is entirely about the characters, getting essentially a demo for Free that is upgradable to the full game if you enjoy it isn't bad. (Honestly Killer Instinct is more DLC-based than F2P micro transactions, since the content remains permanently unlocked.)

It's funny out of all those games Killer Instinct feels out of place as it has one of the best free to play models out there play for free and get to try with one character buy a character you want for five or buy everything for $20 on top of that unlike all the other games on this list it's actually really fun to play and it's a model that would work extremely well with fighting games especially new franchises in the genre as it's hard to get noticed in a genre dominated by KI, MK, SF, and SC.

There was a time when you pay $40 to $60 for a game and get a full game without dlc or microtransactions. Then dlc came where you pay $40 to $60 for a game and pay additional $5 to $10 to unlock costume , missions or storyline in order to proceed. Now the era of freemium, where the game is free but in order to proceed to proceed to next story line or next level you have thousand of dollar and forget about multiplayer,... Multiplayer is dead , the person who used tactics is using money now for good weapons and easy kill R.I.P video games

If you ask me Angry Birds Go was a really good mobile game before the update where you are involved with loot boxes or what ever they call it. I remembered when you just needed coins to up grade your kart. Now you need parts to upgrade and you can’t choose what parts you want. This is the part where the loot boxes come. That’s the reason that I just gave up on the game. Though keep in mined this is just my opinion. I don’t want to start a hole problem here.

The idea behind Metal Slug Defense isn't bad itself. The game is fun, but its problem is that they make it terribly more unbalanced with each more character or machine they add to the store. First the problem was only in the online, but now they are adding levels almost impossible without power ups.

so when fighting games release complete rosters people complain about paying for characters they don't want, but in a F2P option where you can choose which characters you want, people complain about paying for the characters. makes sense. 5 dollars is the norm for dlc chars in fighting games, fighting game characters cost a lot to make.

To be honest I like plants vs zombies 2. Definitely not as good as the first (because it's mobile only, I can't tell you the amount of times I misplaced a plant or touched something I didn't want to because of slippery fingers, and screw jurassic marsh), but even though it's really hard, I was still patient since the tower defence genre largely emphasizes on patience. What's more, since it's time travel (I don't really like time travel because of plot holes, but there are stuff I like) we get to see some really creative zombies, and some really catchy music. Some of the plants (both old and new) are really cool and add to the strategy of the game. Again, some aspects of the game makes it so that it doesn't hold up against the first, but I didn't regret downloading it.

How is Killer Instinct on here? The game is absolutely amazing, and reasonably priced. You can buy the pack and unlock everything for about $20 or so, and they've dropped a few extra fee ones. Yea it started rough, but it's still an amazing game.
