Hmmmm, my first impulse was to include Lindy at the top of any such list. After all, Lindy had all the qualities implied in the list's compilation - football flourish and IQ, goals scored, trophies won, international brand recognition. But then I thought, Lindy was playing a different game from the football played by (say) Sterling. In the 50s, strikers had little or no defensive role. These days, strikers are expected to press off the ball, win tackles high up field and have hold up play in transition. Not to mention the speed of the full backs these days. But on the other hand, the actual ball is also different. It moves much faster, shifting the advantage from the defense and goalkeeper to the striker. Moreover, the quality of the aerial crosses into the box are shockingly accurate these days. If Lindy had today's footballs and accurate crosses, his goal tally would be much higher. On balance, I think Lindy could survive but not necessarily thrive in today's Premier League
