The Gary Matthews Jr catch to me is in the top 3 all time. He took his eyes off the ball, had about half a second to track it, then caught it blind. Still makes my jaw drop.

The Matthews catch is my vote for number one of all time. There are lots and lots of lots of choices (frankly I'm not even sure the Jim Edmonds one was HIS best, let alone one of THE best) but when I think of all the baseball I've ever watched, I always come back to this one. Also, Jackie Bradley Jr had one in extra innings against Baltimore that was equally ridiculous.

All of these except the Ken Griffey Jr. catch have a good argument to be on this list. I would probably rearrange them though. Griffey’s catch was just a routine catch. The only reason it was put on here was that he took it away from his father. That’s not a good enough reason to be on this list.

Willie Mays could beat opponents at every facet of the game except pitching. He could patiently get a base on balls, steal 2nd, go to third on a ground ball and score on a sacrifice fly. He could beat the rivals by hitting a home run. He could beat the adversaries with either a great catch or a great throw, sometimes both in the same play. He was a clutch hitter with runners in scoring position. He could beat the other team with his legs, his arm, his glove, or his bat. Great player and a decent man who endured a fair amount of racism.

He really gets a hold of one and off the bat I was like, "shit...I'm not getting that one", but then I was like "screw it....give it a shot", just turn and ran full steam to where I thought it was headed. Put the glove out in front of me, heard a whistling sound near my ear and out of the corner of my eye I see the ball sail over my shoulder and perfectly into the glove....lol. Best catch I ever made...in a mean nothing moment....haha..

As a lefty playing RF, a ball was hit down the line by a right handed batter. It was hooking to the foul line away from me. I took off after it and didn't take my eye off the ball. I stretched out and made a diving backhand grab about 6 inches off the ground across the body. I bounced up and threw the guy out that was running from first to second as he took off not giving me a chance to catch it. The boys loved that one. There were a couple dive over the fence catches but those were on short fences. Tore my pants on one I had to leave the game. Love the game but hockey was a more engaging sport and there was no stop and go like in baseball and the physical aspect of the game appealed to me. I'm close to 70 now and enjoyed reminiscing.

Great stuff to be sure, but you should see the catch Fred Lynn made in right field that used to be on the introduction to wide world of sports (something like it) in the 1970's. He was laying on top of the fence and caught the ball 4 over it, scratched his side up some as well. Then there is the crazy stuff the Kevin Pillar did in Toronto for a few years. Pretty special.

Although Willie (The Say Hey Kid) Mays made one of the greatest catches that will be seen in baseball. It can be argued that he no longer holds the title for the greatest catch ever made. Since the time of that amazing catch. There have been IMHO a number of just as equally spectacular and even more so spectacular catches. Yet Mays will always be remembered for the greatest catch!!

Kirby Pucketts 1991 Game 6 World Series catch to prevent the Atlanta Braves from extra bases, should have been on this list or everyone's top 10 list of this type of category, compared to a couple of others that's aren't even a top 20 in mt opinion, because without that catch hw doesn't hit the game 6 game winning home run and the Braves would have been 1991 World Series Champions beating the Twins 4-2 instead of Minnesota winning it 4-3. And we never get the great phrase "We'll see you tomorrow night."
