Great list & honorable mentions, Curt! I'll also throw in my guy Joe Thornton's 05-06 season for honorable mention. He scored 92 points in 58 games after being traded to the Sharks and won the Hart. On a similar note, I'd recommend making a Top 10 Anomaly Seasons, in which you select players who had an amazing season in an otherwise so-so career. Case in point: Jonathan Cheechoo's 56 goals in 05-06 :) Keep up the great work!

Mario Lemieux, my idol, my all time favorite player, ive followed him from his junior season up to the end of his unbelievable career. In my personal opinion, and i would debate anyone about this, hes by far the most talented, the most skilled and the most exciting player that ever played the game! Mario was able to do things that no other players could even dream of doing, not even Gretzky could do what Mario was able to do! We will never see another player like him, ever! I can only imagine what Mario would have done in todays NHL, without the hooking, and being free to showcase his larger than life talent...man, i can only imagine!

Quick correction. George Hainsworth was actually the goaltender who had 22 shutouts (not to mention a .92 GAA) in 44 games during the 1928-29 season not Georges Vezina. I remember reading about Hainsworth in an old hockey book I had growing up. Had to point it out lol. Love the videos!

One season I still am shocked when I look at the numbers, is Bernie Nichols 88-89 year. He was not near the top in any awards despite his 70 goal and 80 assist season. Just monstrous numbers. He also was plus 30. Not many have hit the 150 point plateau. This was Gretzky's first season as a King, and had to have a major effect on this year not getting more deserved accolades for "The Pumper"

I still think Harry Lumley's 13 Shutouts, in 53-54 was one of those great seasons one of the greatest for a goaltender when he won the Vezina and had a 1.86 GAA. Or the year after where Ol' Apple Cheeks, posted a 23-24-22 record, yup that's right he managed to get 22 ties, in one season, had a 1.91 GAA and 8 Shutouts. Lumley is one of the All time greats but is sadly often forgotten. How about Rocket Richard's 50 in 50, a record that took till the highest scoring of eras the 80's, to break. The great season of 44-45 where Flash Hollett put in 20, a record that stood till Bobby Orr Broke it. These are some of the Greatest seasons of All time, I think Howe's season should have been number one considering he was coming back from a Fractured skull earlier that spring, he and Lemieux both could have died, except for the fact that Howe still managed to come back after such a bad injury is amazing. I still enjoyed the video.

Including Crosby in the list was a real stretch. Lots of players had great seasons cut short by injury, durability is part of the game. I agree with most of the others seasons on the list, but I think I'd find a way to include Hull's 86 goals in 90-91, Lemieux's 199 points in 88-89, Gretzky's 100 goal season (87 reg season + 13 playoff) in 83-84 which ended with a Cup, and Gretzky's 255 point season (208 reg season + 47 playoff) which also ended with a Cup and a Conn Smythe! Unless you're limiting a player to only appear on the list once, in which case, I agree, Lemieux's 92-93 season was his most special, and Gretzky's 92 goal season was his best.

Probert's 87-88 season is as impressive as ANY of those mentioned... How does one score 62 points while leading the league in penalty minutes with a ridiculous 398? that is so insane -- he was also an all star -- not only that but he came in 9th place in the end of the season all star voting. IMO that 398 in penalty minutes that season will never be broken, players these days barely get 200 penalty minutes in a season let alone double that.... And I am aware that isn't the NHL record for PIM in a season, however when you match that with production... Bob Probert: 1987-88 74 games played 29 goals 33 assists 62 points (would have scored 5 more points had he not spent 6.5 full games in the box, lol). *398 penalty minutes* 23% shooting percentage ^Those numbers speak volumes. He could beat the shit out of you and score just to pour salt into the wound. A lot of fans of the sport think of Bob Probert as nothing more than a goon/enforcer - when in reality he was an offensively gifted hockey player with soft hands and fantastic shot. He was a star in his own right, who knows what he could have been had he focused more on being the gifted hockey player that was than being a goon/enforcer. In 1984-85 in the OHL with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Probert scored 72 points in 44 games (52) of his points were assists - he also spent 172 minutes in the box which is 313 minutes over an 80 game season.... That is just insane. Averaging 3.90 penalty minutes a game, while averaging 1.6 points a game.

It feels like Crosby and Lemieux are getting bonus points for injuries. Your extrapolated numbers for Lemieux also take advantage of the fact that in that season it was 84 games, not 80 or 82 like most other seasons. For example, if you extrapolate Gretzky's averages from 1983-84 to an 84 game season (he played 74 games out of 80 that year) like you did for Lemieux's 1992-93 season you would get 99 goals, 134 assists, for 233 points. He beat Lemieux's 1992-93 goals per game, assists per game, and of course points per game that year. And another problem with projecting points based on per game averages is that if the injury that kept Gretzky out of 6 games had instead been a season ending injury he would have had 153 points in 51 games, which would project to 240 points over an 80 game season, or 252 points over an 84 game season. It's hard to keep up historically high averages over more games. If the argument is that it was higher scoring in the 80's than the 90's, let's look at the next highest scorers in 83-84 and 92-93. 1983-84 most goals. Gretzky 87, Goulet 56, Kerr 54. 1992-93 most goals. Mogilny 76, Selanne 76, Lemieux 69. 1983-84 most assists. Gretzky 118, Coffey 86, Pederson 77. 1992-93 most assists. Oates 97, Gilmour 95, Lafontaine 95 (Lemieux was 4th with 91) 1983-84 most points. Gretzky 205, Coffey 126, Goulet 122. 1992-93 most points. Lemieux 160, Lafontaine 148, Oates 142. And I know one of the big things about Lemieux's 1992-93 season (aside from beating cancer) was that he won the scoring title despite missing so many games. It took Lemieux 56 games to get more points (149) than 2nd place Pat Lafontaine ended up scoring that year. In 1983-84 it took Gretzky just 42 games to score more points (127) than 2nd place Paul Coffey that year. In fact, Gretzky had 4 other seasons where he won the scoring title with fewer games needed than Lemieux's best season. Gretzky only needed 45 games in 1986-87, 48 in 1984-85, 51 games in 1982-83, and 53 in 1985-86. Plus, it's worth noting that Gretzky's Oilers won the Stanley Cup in 1983-84, and as you mentioned Lemieux's Penguins didn't win the Stanley Cup in 1992-93. If that's something you want to look for as well. So yeah, I don't think Lemieux's 1992-93 season is a slam dunk best season ever, and I am shocked that you had Gretzky down in 4th place.

Gretzky takes home the prize for stamina, work ethic and the greatest 10 yr dominance in history while Mario gets some love for his courageous comebacks and resiliency while dominating across 3 eras. Not arguing over whose season/career was better because the degrees of excellence between 99 & 66 are so negligible that a fine tooth comb is not enough to seperate the variables which made them so godly. Both players are incomprehensibly the greatest the game has ever seen; 99 was a statistical anamoly while 66 was a physical anamoly. They are two sides of the same coin and I don't think we'll ever see anything like them.

I wish you could give Yzerman some more respect. His 1988-1989 season is one of the best ever and the best for someone not named Gretzky or Lemieux. Stevie Yzerman had a bunch of role players and still put up 60 goals and 90 assists. That is better than Crosby IMHO. If you put Yzerman on either that stacked early 80's Oilers team or 90's Penguins team I think he sniffs the 200 point mark. It sad you didn't even give him a honorable consideration. I don't think I will be watching any more of this guys videos
@slauzon01
@slauzon01 2 жыл бұрын
That 88-89 season was messed up in so many ways. Yzerman always lived in their shadows, but so did Peter Statsny and Hawerchuk. All of them great players. But back to the 88-89 season, Lemieux outcores Wayne by 31 points and Yzerman by 45 points and only takes home the Art Ross. meanwhile, Gretzky takes the Hart and Yzerman takes the Pearson. Think of that. I'm not diminishing anything Yzerman did anymore that I'm highlighting the gross inconsistencies of nhl here. Lemieux led the league in every catagory ppg, shg, gls, assist and 57.4 % team scoring share and that season wasn't even on the the top ten of greatest nhl season ever.

What fun this is page is, and what a shame the NHL won't allow these posts as Fair Use. Seems pretty crabbed and Scrooge-like. The top season of all-time (among skaters, anyway) has to be Orr's 1970-71. No player ever did as much to contribute to his team's wins, and elevate his teammates, as Orr did that season. It's true the previous season was the most season ever, not just for the four major awards, but for value over everyone else in the league. But 1970-71, good god, that +124, which grows to +173 when you count PP and SH. For what it's worth, both GVT and Point Shares also peg that season as the best. And to head off the "competition was easy" crowd , he managed five goals and eight assists in twelve games against the two best defensive teams that year, Chicago and New York. In one of the games that the Black Hawks did shut him out, he reeled off nine shots; sometimes there's no beating a great goaltender.
