That machine head track at 0:27 is using natural harmonics not pinch harmonics. Natural harmonic examples are songs like Blurry-Puddle of Mudd or Dark Passenger by Veil of Maya, what gives it away is that pinch harmonics usually have a bit of vibrato.

Insane respect for including I Hear Black. Horrifically underrated album with many diverse sounds and amazing songs.
@leonarddillon25615 күн бұрын
There's no other Groove Metal record that I recommend more than "Master Killer" by Merauder from 1995. It's the only album that I know of that plays the same notes in all of their songs and figured out how to make their songs distinct from each other. Not to mention, It's more Groove than Pantera (not heavier though), which I never thought was even possible until I listened to the album in its entirety on multiple plays. I also recommend Grip Inc., Exhorder, and Pissing Razors, for they play so well in the Groove subgenre but have been forgotten over the years, unfortunately.

Great picks, I Hear Black is criminally underrated. What do you think of Soulfly? Maybe it would be overkill adding them when Sepultura is included, but a lot of their albums do fall into the groove metal territory, mixed with thrash or death. Btw if you ever do a video on thrash, I suspect you will include either Annihilator's Alice in Hell or Never Neverland. Those are great albums, but I recommend checking out Refresh the Demon and Carnival Diablos. They are very underrated thrash albums in my opinion (although Refresh isn't pure thrash since some of the songs are straight up hard rock songs, the song Hunger even directly references Back in Black).
@whatsinameme525816 күн бұрын
I definitely know Soulfly, but maybe I should give them a relisten. It's been a minute. And I'll check out those Thrashers.
@thebrodator16 күн бұрын
@@whatsinameme5258 Soulfly's last two albums are great so I would recommend them. There is also Omen, an album I know a lot of people don't care for, but I like it. It even has guest appearances from the main singers of Prong and Dillenger Escape Plan.

Interesting description of the NWOAHM, as I always did say it was a mix between groove metal and melodeath, which melodic metalcore takes its prime inspiration from. Devildriver especially I considered a perfect blend of Pantera and 90s In Flames.
@whatsinameme525815 күн бұрын
Yeah, in all fairness, Devildriver is less metalcore than Lamb of God. I probably could get away with just calling them melodeath.

While I am not the biggest fan of groove metal, I always intended to give Great Southern Trendkill a chance. It's the record you hear the least about. I liked Vulgar Display of Power when I was a kid, but I don't really go for that posturing bravado stuff in groove metal, and Pantera, specifically. But I wondered if GST was different because of Anselmo's involvement with Down and the infusion of the Southern Metal sound. I further wondered if there was some slight peppering of an Eyehategod sludge metal sound, which could be really cool.

I highly recommend you listen to Demolition Hammer’s “Timebomb” their transition from Brutal Thrash (obviously very similar to Death Metal) to Groove metal while still keeping their their Brutal Thrash sound in tact (vocals and certain riffs) makes for the best combo of Groove Metal with another metal genre
@eliel14ful14 күн бұрын
Pantera #1 is no surprise, southern trendkill is a great album just like and Justice for All, never understood the dislike for those albums, I would argue that far beyond driven is heavier just by the track "Slaughtered" which i consider to be a precursor to current deathcore Great list i now have more albums to hit the gym with... groove metal is power and aggression made music

@whatsinameme525814 күн бұрын
Once more Round the Sun is Stoner Rock/Prog. Some of Mastodon's early stuff is very Sludge Metal inspired though. Sludge and Groove are often confused and frequently blended together. Stoner Rock is also "groovy", but it's a different sound from Groove Metal.

Fucken PRONG 🤟🤟🤟🤟 My absolute favourite band despite only discovering them about a year ago. Although, I'd argue that their latest album State Of Emergency is a way stronger Groove Metal album than Cleansing. Also, the album "Scourge" by Xentrix is a worthy mention. Their least popular album because it sticks out like a sore thumb among all the Thrash releases they've put out. But Scourge is brilliant in it's own right 👌👌👌

I kinda look at Groove Metal as a mix of Mid Tempo Thrash, New York Hardcore, and Alternative Metal. So take a Mid Tempo version of 80’s Metallica, mix it with some Madball, and then mix that with some early Alt Metal stuff like Helmet and you’ve got Groove Metal. It’s why I think bands like Hatebreed, Throwdown, Biohazard, and Pro Pain all belong as Groove Metal bands. I also think that bands like Fear Factory, Ministry, White Zombie, and Nailbomb would also make sense as Groove Metal bands.
@whatsinameme525816 күн бұрын
Hatebreed and company are "Metallic Hardcore", which is basically Groove Metal + additional Hardcore influence. The original Metalcore sound, before Melodic Metalcore came around.
