Can you explore the recent surge of Metalcore/Melodeath bands in the underground hardcore (mostly straight edge) scene? Bands like Balmora, Memento., A Mourning Star, Amnio, XaogcX, Amnio, Durendal etc etc. The oldest example of the new wave is probably xElegyx, but the sound itself has been a thing for a long time, spanning back to the proto-deathcore scene, from what I can gather… Thanks!

You got good taste. In your upcoming video on melodic black metal, you might make a quick mention of the rare melodic metalcore bands who strangely drew inspiration from black metal rather than just the more typical trio of thrash, melodic death metal, and hardcore. Bands like Bleeding Through, Abigail Williams, Becoming the Archetype, and Mindscar. Between the Buried and Me also took huge influence from Emperor and Ulver. I think the frontmen of Trivium and Emperor have collaborated for a while. And it's crazy to remember how Underoath started out as sort of a black metal band lol. Who else? There's not many, so it's really rare and interesting as a subgenre.

It's curious how we have come full circle. After melodic metalcore showed up in the early 2000s, many melodic death metal bands, old and new, embraced many of their tropes. Then others went even further to where some call "modern metal", which is essentially melodic metalcore with a melodeath flavor and don't do breakdowns. That would make for a good video in itself.

It's mostly an European thing, I think all but one of the bands I just mentioned are. They often hinge closer to pop elements (the band dEMOTIONAL by instance, somehow kind of sounds like The Calling). They're not --core enough to be metalcore but they're not quite melodeath either. As for melodeath with elements from melodic metalcore (most commonly harsh/clean vocal duality, sometimes done by two separate singers, as well as general song structure sans the breakdown), some examples I'd give are Deadlock (most notable Manifesto-era), Rise to Fall, Disarmonia Mundi and Soilwork (tho they've been doing Jekyll-and-Hide since at least 2001). Might drop more examples if i remember them but im out of ideas right now

I think the main difference between melodic metalcore and metalcore is that metalcore originally was apart of the hardcore scene. Hardcore had been getting heavier ever since it started, discharge were one of the first bands to really make things heavy and almost go metal while still staying punk. Punk is political, and even though metal was and can be, it kind of became a little more goofy, for lack of a better word (power metal is a great example). Punk/hardcore got so heavy that it was metal riffs (sometimes) with political themes or sometimes just aggressive and tough guy bravado. Metalcore is hardcore done slower, with more chugs, more breakdowns, more brooding and more political, melodic metalcore is adjacent to the hardcore scene but breaks off and has more melodeath influence. I think the confusion happens when genres evolve over time, more influences blend and mesh, it happens over time and then it becomes completely unrecognizable. What metalcore or melodic metalcore means now is completely unrecognizable to what it was in the 90s or 00s.

I disagree with your notion that the Jekyll and Hyde vocals are what makes melodic metalcore. Oddly enough I actually first got into death metal, melodic death metal to be more precise, Arch Enemy and Children of Bodom specifically, thanks to none other than Symphonic Metal of all things. In fact it was this very Jekyll and Hyde vocals that allowed me to finally appreciate harsh vocals after randomly hearing Arch Enemy's Blood on Your Hands in a records store back in the day(on 1 of those cd players they had in the store) while I was buying some Metallica, Iron Maiden and Megadeth albums, the store clerk offered me to listen to some Rise of the Tyrant to see if I like it and buy it too. At that point in time my ears couldn't yet handle the harsh vocals, I was still very much a metal newbie. It wasn't until listening to Epica's Cry for the Moon and Within Temptation's debut album: Enter, that I begun to appreciate harsh vocals as a whole, and so naturally I remembered that song Blood on Your Hands I heard in the record store, so I figured that would be as good of a starting point as any to begin delving deep into the harsh vocals metal sub-genres. My point being that nobody would accuse Epica, Within Temptation of any other Symphonic/Gothic Metal band, of being melodic metalcore, yet they too make heavy use of the Jekyll and Hyde style vocals. In fact they elaborate on the concept of the Jekyl and Hide vocals of not just combining clean and harsh but having 2 or more vocalists within the same band, sometimes it's 2 or more clean vocals that are simply different(male and female, higher and lower, etc) or in the case of more than 2 than combinations of 2 cleans and 1 harsh are also pretty common in that sub-genre. I'm talking specifically about bands like Visions of Atlantis, Sirenia, Tristania, Theater of Tragegy, etc and of course the grand mommy of them all: Nightwish.

I have a bit of a hypothesis that Avenged sevenfold has a bit of a running theme of dealing with betrayal. And much in the same vein, I think a lot of melodic metalcore, and really a lot of 2000s metalcore has as much of a theme of betrayal and the insuing hatred and violence that can follow as it is romance. The chorus singing in reminiscence of the time before the betrayal, and the verse screaming in the agony and/or vengeance in retribution.
@whatsinameme525810 ай бұрын
I'm not 100% sure what to make of it yet, but I have noticed a bit of theme in A7Xs album names. WAKING the Fallen. NIGHTMARE. Life is but a DREAM. It seems like their music feels less and less jaded with each release. Perhaps making peace with said betrayal?
@morgothbauglir90610 ай бұрын
@@whatsinameme5258 If you're understanding of Nightmare being about the stages grief of is correct, and by the end, the album's character has come to terms with themselves, then one could interpret the past three albums as that character attempting to find meaning in a world where vengeance doesn't drive them anymore. With Hail to the King being the attempt to find meaning in the exercise of power, The Stage being a search for meaning in the universe, and finally LIBAD, where they come to grips with the universe's lack of inherent meaning. Waking the Fallen being the most " pure metalcore " of their discography is also kind of on point through this lens, as it could be seen as when the betrayal took place. This idea has plenty of holes in it, such as where all the actual songs would fit, or what the hell Diamonds in the Rough is. One wouldn't be remiss to wonder where the hell Girl I Know or St James would fit, but it's fun to surmise, I suppose.

I would say that melodic metalcore isn't just romantic, it's hopelessly romantic. It often presents love and pain as two sides of the same coin, and sometimes even blurs the lines between the two as they can often both be present at the same time in the lyrical themes. There's a saying that goes "grief and mourning is just love that has no place to go and nobody to recieve it", and I think melodic metalcore encapsulates that concept rather perfectly.

That’s very interesting that you bring up Christian metal and how majority of them are metalcore and sing about loving Jesus. I noticed that as well, and while I have nothing against them making songs about loving God or finding strength from Jesus and all that, I think they are wasting their potential with metal by basically just writing heavy versions of normal church worships songs in the metalcore style. I don’t think Christian’s realize the vast amount of lyrical content they have in the Bible from stories, to Christian philosophy, to interesting character decisions and motivations, that can all be brought to light by other styles of metal. Like Metallica’s creeping death being about the angel of death killing all the first born children. Why don’t Christian’s sing and write songs like that? There is so much wasted potential for that. Instead they want to write lame worship songs in a rather boring metal genre just recycling the same themes and messages. Beast and the harlot by A7X was the first song to open my eyes to this and made me realize I feel more immersed in Christian lore listening to a VERY not Christian band, than actual Christian bands.
@j.m.192810 ай бұрын
I totally get what you mean bro. That's why I'm not fond of the Christian label in general anymore. Yes, it's rooted in Christianity but at the end of the day it's still just music that the musician felt compelled to sing about. Contemporary Christian Music as a whole isn't even a real genre of music because the label is solely thematic, not a style of music. It just doesn't make sense imo.
@whatsinameme525810 ай бұрын
This is largely a problem with the message coming before the art. Its why much of Christian media comes off as cringey, because it set out to have a message, rather than be organic art. Its gotta be art for arts sake that happens to have christian themes. Then it'll be good, because then it won't seem to be preaching.

Melodic Metalcore doesn't require clean vocals and isn't defined by 'love song' writing imo (and genres shouldn't be defined by lyrical themes anyway). In particular you can argue that 85% of all songs are 'love songs' in some form, so I don't think the lyrical content of Melodic Metalcore sets it apart from other music. It only highlights that lyrical content of heavier subgenres are typically not love related. Personally I like clean vocals but I don't like 'emo' vocals. My favorite older bands from the 90's are As I Lay Dying, Heaven Shall Burn and Parkway Drive. I consider all of these Melodic Metalcore as their guitar work and a certain amount of their vocal work is melodic and 'hooky'.
