Steven's voice is genuinely fantastic BUT Chris's voice had more "texture" to it, if that makes sense. His voice was clear or thick or silky or raspy, perfectly adapting to whatever he was singing. Steven's voice always sounded the same, GREAT, but always the same. Chris had about 5 different sounding voice techniques. Just my opinion, but he was just THE BEST!

He really stays in what is obviously a comfortable range for him, and in general he’s not doing anything particularly interesting with his vocals, it’s usually very typical type of classic hard rock heavy metal fare that doesn’t really take any risks or produce any real “wow” moments. Layne was so incredibly talented. His passing was so sad. I won't listen to anything Alice in Chains without Layne in it. It's not it without him.

Seriously… imo a good part of why AIC’s vocals were so compelling was because of how Layne and Jerry’s vocals complemented each other.

That simple heavy sludgy drop d progression on Silverchair's "Pure Massacre" is still tasty almost 30 years later. Thanks for for having Ben McMillan on this list. He was a very influential person here in the early days, and Gruntruck was awesome.
