Sonny Jurgensen ranked at #3 is the ultimate wildcard that few expected, myself included. I've heard of him but didn't KNOW of him. Looking at his stats, his career TD passes are only 18 behind Joe Montana's and ahead of Steve Young, Kurt Warner and Troy Aikman. And the way he effortlessly threw the ball with touch and accuracy is a sight to behold. Now I KNOW of Sonny Jurgensen.

I had Bills' season tickets back in the late 80s-early 90s and got to see the Kelly-Marino duels in person. I got to see a lot of real good football back then. In 1999, all Kurt Warner was doing was playing Arena football at the NFL level.

Look at what he had, Holt, Bruce , FAULK, Dre Bly, Prohl, stacked assed team. They could have put Jeff George in there and probably won that year. And that Cardinals team was the same way. Not to take away from Warner he is a good Quarterback but wayyy overrated.

@speakinfaxonly21 Жыл бұрын
@@djLagwayEnjoyeronce they switched to Kurt, they went 2-8 lmao. Wtf are you talking about? He was 2-8 his first season in Ari. 1-4 the next year, and 5-6 the following year. He went 9-7 in. 08' and 10-5 in 09'. Btw, they actually regressed when the put in Warner. They were 6-10 the year prior to getting Kurt. They were 5-11 with Kurt as the primary QB going 2-8 with 11 Touchdowns in 10 games, and 9 picks. That dog shit you call Matt Leinhart, even though he wasn't even on the team anymore and it was actually Josh McCown, went 3-3 that year. They weren't good until Kurt's 4th year with the team. They got lucky going to the Superbowl too. They were 7-3 at one point, finished the season 2-4 with a beat down of 47-7 loss against the Pats. He got over 1100 yards from his Running backs that consisted of Edgerin James, Tim HighTower and JJ arrington. A very good backfield. Then he had 2 all timers in Anquon Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald lmao. That team was stacked. Don't forget Steve Breaston who everybody thinks is a slouch but had over 1,000 yards receiving that year. Leagues 3rd best offense that year and it's only because all they did was throw the ball. Those 1100 yards from his running backs, should have been 2000+ if they didn't rely on Kurt to throw 40 times a game. Their running backs had a COMBINED 302 carries. That's 19 running plays per game. If they ran it 25-27 times like normal teams do, that running back core gets you 1600+ yards easily. Kurt was solid. No doubt. But he was overrated and has the benefit of great teams. Look no further than Marc Bulger on that rams team. He dominated his first year with the Isaac Bruce's and The Faulks, but the following year, they got a year older, they were aging, and he flopped. Same thing that would have happened to Warner. There's only a few guys who can make a career of this when it doesn't matter who they're throwing too. The list is short. Brady. Manning. Mahomes. (Although we haven't seen Mahomes do it yet with the scrubs like Reche Caldwell, I suspect he could if he had too)

Funny... Warren Moon's actually the second guy I thought of after Favre, on account of arm strength, mobility, and of course his offense is literally called "run and shoot". Never considered the fact he might be *too smart* to be a top 3 Gunslinger though. xD

Fran Tarkenton was correct - the fact that he, Johnny Unitas and Joe Montana aren't on the list are three huge omissions. I would put them on there along with Terry Bradshaw, Norm Van Brocklin, Bobby Layne, John Elway and Drew Brees. Of the remainder, the only issue I have is that Daryle Lamonica should be in the Hall Of Fame.

@@MRB16th I think Montana is the greatest quarterback of all time (yes, even over Brady) but I don't consider him a gunslinger. To me, a gunslinger has to almost play with reckless abandon, much like Favre, someone who believes that they can complete a pass against any defense and are gonna try to fit a ball into tight coverage three or four times a game because of the faith they have in their arm strength, and it often leads to multiple interceptions per game. Joe didn't do those kinds of things. He never led the league in interceptions in any season like Favre, Moon or Namath each did in multiple seasons, the most INTs Joe threw in a season was 16. He didn’t have the strongest arm but he didn’t need the strongest arm because he was a smart quarterback. If the medium to deep ball wasn’t there, Joe had no problem checking it down. He took care of the football and focused on winning, regardless if a touchdown drive was 4 plays or 14 plays. That’s why I don’t consider him a gunslinger.
@ronaldhendricks38762 жыл бұрын
I think in terms of “pure arm talent” Marino is number 1 all time. If he played today in his prime, he’d throw for 7 or 8,000 yds a year.
@johnselwitz5362Ай бұрын
Minimum 6,000 yards and 60 to 70 touchdowns if he played in today’s NFL and would probably have a ring or two. His 1984 season is more than worthy of an MVP in this day and age, so the fact that he did it during an era where there weren’t all these rules to handcuff the defense becomes even more mind blowing.
@elijahjones27633 жыл бұрын
Daryle Lamonica might be the most underrated quarterback of all time. For a while he won almost every game, threw for a million yards, and did not have a huge TD-INT ratio for a guy that played in the 60s.

@@cyrillesuIt was all week to week for Kurt, one game he’d be a surgeon, next week he’d be a gunslinger and be prone to errors. I think of the playoff game against the Packers where he threw more touchdowns than incompletions and dissected a really good defense. Then there’s his 2000 and 2001 seasons where he was great but threw a LOT of interceptions. That’s just the style of offense he played in. In 2001, he had seven games where he threw two or more interceptions, but the Rams went 5-2 in those games so he was given a considerable amount of leeway.

I think the antithesis of a gunslinger is a backup who comes in with the game in the balance, needs to make a decisive throw for a first down, and throws for 3-5 yards out of 7-10 needed because they're fearful of the wrong move. A gunslinger in football is never afraid of the wrong decision no matter how many times they point the gun at themselves with their decision making. They dont see 3 defenders draped all over a guy, they see the big play about to happen. They don't care if its 1st and 10, or 4th and 26, it takes guts to play any down so why approach any down differently? A gunslinger in football can be everything right about the sport in its purest childlike form of magic and heartbreak. They can be the reason a team is 11-5, and 5-11. They are the most volatile player on the field at all times and when you think of the biggest gunslingers in history, they are must see TV because of it.

a 'slinger' to me, means a big time passer, who could throw the ball through a wall for starters, would salivate if the coach said that he'd (qb) would be throwing EVERY down for an upcoming game. First one who comes to mind, is Elway, then Favre and Marino. My top three.

It is so interesting watching these films of Namath and Marino's passes. I swear they could throw further and more accurate then Brady and the QB's of today.

If Brett wasn't number 1 this whole list would be illegitimate.

Elway isnt on here? Thats silly cmon now XD Marino Favre and Elway are the trinity of gunslinger.

No Ben. And no Doug. That’s okay, it’s not like Big Ben has led the league in longest throw at least 4 times or that Doug Williams was said to be able to throw a football endzone to endzone.

Now that Mathew Stafford has a Superbowl ring. I think you could say that he is a gunslinger. GO RAMS!😎😎😎

I don't know if you can really call AROD a gunslinger. He doesn't really throw enough interceptions to be a gunslinger.

Brees is excellent & HoF bound but but he doesn’t have a canon arm nor did he play in an era where a QB was expected to hang in the pocket & take big hits for clutch long completions. Maybe there should be a category for “modern gunslingers” because he really is one of the greatest of all time.
@r.williamcomm76934 жыл бұрын
But yes, you’re right. Brees getting his ring in 2009 wasn’t contemplated here.

The guy that should be right behind Favre on this list is Mathew Stafford. Some of the guys on this list are great Quarterbacks but they are to polished to be gunslingers. A gunslinger isn't defined by high stats alone, they are high risk, high reward usually due to having big arms.
@dwightlove37042 жыл бұрын
James Harris,Joe Gilliam were a couple of gunslingers!!!!!
