Top 10 Hardest Vocal Lines Explained - Ten Second Songs Voice Teacher Ken Tamplin Reacts
I recently caught up with my friend and former KTVA student Anthony Vincent.
Anthony has developed himself into a multi-faceted artist and singer and it's always great to catch up with him
We recently did a video chat session where I had the chance to do a reaction to his 10 Hardest Vocal Lines to Sing with him there. We covered his vocal performances of lines from artists like Johnny Cash, Sia, Michael Boltion, Chris Cornell and many more.
I also had the opportunity to ask him some questions and get his perspective on different issues ranging from what it takes to succeed as an artist to what his biggest musical influences were.
As a former student of KTVA, the feedback I give to Anthony is always straight up. Together we will look at what he did best and where there was room for improvement.
Check out our conversation and my reactions and let me know what you thought!
I also wanted to share the versions of these songs from me and my students.

Just went over to Anthony's page and watched the history and his reaction to the "cringey" videos. But, you know, if we don't make those videos and recordings we will NEVER get any better. I go through all my stuff from 10-20 years ago, even just last year, and some is really bad, but I just keep pressing ahead. Thanks for this message. And NO it is not talent, it is mostly DRIVE!

I loved this whole conversation! Especially the part about story telling. I have years of experience when it comes to singing the story, because its how i found my voice while going through the emotions of the lyrics. And also because i write songs as they come regardless which style. The songs needed me to communicate in a certain way, so it helped tuning in to the emotion behind it. Now a few years later i have come to the point where learning more about the healthy way of singing equals progress. This is how i found you Ken, because Ten second songs spoke about his teacher in truth and passion. In this stage i am right now "just finished my vocal booth for practice", seeing you 2 guys in this talk feels like a milestone. Wanting more of the future, going deeper into the work that needs to be done. Sometimes the road ahead is only visible like a tunnel. But then someone puts up a huge sign saying, go left here and find what you are going for because the proof is in the.... Thanks to you both for putting those signs in the ground.

I'm now taking out one brick at a time and am able to understand *how* I'm taking that brick out thanks to you.

When Sia sings Chandelier you can feel the emotion, the pain, the desperation she put in that song, in those lyrics. That's why nobody can sing this song like her, healthy or unhealthy, because everybody focus on vocals when this song is a cry for help so should sound like a cry for help not like a walk in tha park. I love the piercing way she attacks the notes , like she sings for the last time in her life, "like tomorrow doesn't exists", and she makes me feel that huge emotion. That's why I love her. I heard Chandelier sung "by the book" vocally, like a demonstration, like "look at me how I hit that note". I felt nothing! Chandelier is Sia's song, Sia's life story and nobody can tell this story better than her.

Super interesting info. Ken, it would be really useful if you showcased a student with a truly dark baritone or bass voice singing Steve Perry or higher clean Plant range. We've heard bright baritones singing distorted Cornell "Show Me How To Live" etc but an Avi Kaplan type voice singing Journey's 'Lights' or somn would be telling. Cheers and great work!!

I sincerely hope that Ken will become a billionaire with the sales of this course, because, in fact, it is the best in the entire market. We see many coaches out there, basically unable to. But this guy is the best, he proves with his own voice and more than 35 years of career. I have been studying English, just to take his classes. I intend to develop and improve my skills to bring quality to my band (we are metal musicians from Brazil). It may sound crazy, but yes, I am studying *ENGLISH* *ONLY* to study with *KEN* ! What I really want is to be part of *KTVA.* Hey, you guys who speak native English are lucky. You all have a gold mine right in your face, this guy is The Master.

I like how you bring up that Michael Bolton is high... I was talking to a DJ buddy of mine here in GA about Bolton vocals... Like the dude sings tenor but he has really dark tone to the point he almost sounds like a baritone. And we started talking about other singer who are what I call "deceptively high," these high baritones and tenors who have such a dark or husky timbre to their voice they sound like a typical vocalist from a lower register.

Ken, have you listened to David Lee Roth’s isolated vocal? On running w the devil specifically? It sounds to me like they used an effect (harmonizer set to an octave) if I remember correctly there are parts without the effect too where he is doing straight falsetto. Would love for you to do a reaction to his isolated vocal and dive deeper into that discussion! 🤞🏼Thanks brother!

Geez, Ken! I didn't know you worked with this guy! I used to watch his videos a lot! Edit: At around the 5 minute mark, I realized he started out the same position I'm in now. I go to karaoke, sing something for the first time ever, and sing stuff that really pushes my boundary but that I still believe I can do. Queen, Journey, Scorpions, Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder... and I end up almost pulling it off! I record it so I can listen and learn from it and every week I go back and try something more dynamic, higher or lower range, more emotional, more intense or aggressive, more soft and subtle... then I go home and listen to it, and listen to Ken and Chris Leipe and learn something to try with my technique next time. I'm in between jobs but I really want to learn systematically when I can afford the course!

I really appreciated this video, Ken. I knew that Mr. Vincent was a student of yours, but never really watched any of his videos; which I will after writing this comment. ;) Also, the rock band that Michael Bolton was in was called Blackjack (I have the album), but I always dismissed his vocal ability, his curly mullet, and his "talent" because I thought he was a bit of a chump. He sang nothing but cover tunes, I felt. My first memory of his songs being on the radio was "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay"; followed by "Georgia On My Mind", then "When a Man Loves a Woman." He then had the cajones to plagiarize the Isley Brothers' song "Love is a Wonderful Thing." What a d-bag. Like he didn't make enough money from airplay on the adult contemporary/easy-listening stations and album sales? The final straw was seeing him on the Tonight Show (perhaps when Johnny Carson was alive??) and watching him try to "impress" people by singing "opera." Yep. You know which piece, Ken. It's the one piece that every single "non-singer/non-opera singer" sings when they want to prove that they can sing "opera." Schubert's dreaded "Avé Maria"; It's like Pachelbel's "Canon in D" for singers. 🤢 Nevertheless, I have cut Mr. Bolton some slack since back in the early 90s. He *can* sing, and he does have a great sense of humor. Check out his collaboration with Lonely Island called "Jack Sparrow." ✌🏼🤙🏼

Both hard workers and talented vocalists. A good friend of mine who has been involved in music with me for 15 years or so said something that makes great sense; "Perfection doesn't come from 100 repetitions, it comes from a 100 corrections done right." Practice in poor form only makes you well practiced at being bad at it!

28:11 Opeth singer, Mikael Åkerfeldt, he's 46 and started with extreme vocals. He does that in every concert all along with his normal clean singing. So yeah I don't think it's that bad to produce that kind of sounds with that technique (which is the one that a lot of people do). Don't wanna sound too cocky or arrogant, I just think he has a more than decent clean voice even if he did and still does Growl vocals.

Yeah I'm 19. Started to do vocals a year ago from ground zero. I had so much strain in my voice. My speaking voice was very quiet, non-resonant, muffled like my speaking note was F#2 like at the very bottom of my range. My voice is naturally deep. I guess I'm a true baritone. I couldn't hit G3 without strain and I'm not mixing octaves. Now a yeah has passed I know that I had a huge disbalance in my voice I went to either too bright on the sound or too deep and thick. Now my comfortable range is G2-C4. C#4 is almost there, I sent recording to my teacher she says it's a good belted note but I don't have consistency. Now I speak a little higher and brighter and low notes are a bit harder than earlier. I think in a 6 month I'll get up to F4 or G4

@@kentamplin today I busted it out C#4-D#4 notes pretty easily during lesson. It's damn loud. Now I guess I need to work this area to strengthen muscles, experiment with different vowels, levels of volume, then after couples of weeks I'll start to work with E4-G4 area. Those are some serious notes I guess :)

I think David Lee Roth still hits some very high notes live (like as high as, say, a B in mix voice) it’s just that he doesn’t have a lot of stamina vocally at his age. It could be that the falsetto on early records was just forced above the top of his unforced falsetto range.

Ken, I wish I could afford you as a mentor, but first as the Seal's high rank officer told you, I don't even know if I can proper sing. I'll have to reach out a course over internet, because I'm unable to find a mentor out of local popular genre.
