Due to the limitations set by the laws of physics, the top speed parameter is not the most important one for a helicopter, and is being sidelined by such technical characteristics as maneuverability, cruising velocity, payload capacity, and range.
However, attempts to bend these restrictions and develop ever faster models is a never-ending process, and today we have some extraordinarily quick machines crossing the skies. In this episode we gathered the best representatives of speedy helicopters and all of the important specifications about them.

Airbus H160: airbus.com/helicopters/civil-helicopters/medium/h160.html
2019 Airbus H160 formerly known as the X4 is the follow-on of the company’s high-speed technology demonstrator called the Eurocopter X3 that is aimed for series production. Its first deliveries to the buyers are scheduled for 2019 with planned production of 50 units per year.
Lockheed Martin S-97 RAIDER: lockheedmartin.com/en-us/products/s-97-raider-helicopter.html
Under development since 2010, the new Lockheed Martin aka Sikorsky S-97 RAIDER completed its maiden flight in 2015, and has since passed the 200 knots speed mark during a test flight, nearing the prospected maximum speed 240 knots.
Airbus RACER: airbus.com/newsroom/press-releases/en/2017/06/Airbus-Helicopters-reveals-Racer-high-speed-demonstrator-configuration.html
2020 Airbus RACER is a direct offspring of the Eurocopter X-Cube that is aimed to complete its first flight in 2020. It is expected to fly at 215 knots cruising speed, delivering a 15 % decrease in fuel consumption and a 50% increase in cruising speed when compared to a traditional helicopter.
Sikorsky-Boeing SB1 Defiant: boeing.com/defense/future-vertical-lift/index.page
Usually referred to simply as the SB-1, this aircraft is a member of the United States Army’s program Future Vertical Lift. The final design is a compound helicopter with rigid counter-rotating coaxial main rotors and a pusher propeller.
Sikorsky X2: lockheedmartin.com/en-us/products/x2-helicopter-technology-demonstrator.html
The X2 Experimental high-speed compound helicopter by Sikorsky flew for the first time in 2008. It is an already retired aircraft, that serves as the platform for the development of Sikorsky S-97 Raider and SB1 Defiant.
Sikorsky HH-60W: lockheedmartin.com/en-us/products/sikorsky-hh-60w-combat-rescue-helicopter.html
Also known as, Combat Rescue Helicopter, the all-new Sikorsky HH60W has completed its maiden flight in May 2019. It is based on the already struggling HH-60G Pave Hawk, which has been in operation for almost four decades.
Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey: boeing.com/defense/v-22-osprey
You must have seen this unique aircraft in multiple blockbuster movies like Transformers and the latest Godzilla installment. The reason why it is loved by Hollywood so much is the unique tiltrotor design that gives it vertical takeoff and landing and high-speed flight capabilities.

As a former Army Officer, I think the Army needs two or three variations of the tilt rotor hybrid. We need one variation that is totally assault and another utility one and last a medevac fast mover. But the airbus aircraft for 8.6 million is a great deal.

Tiltrotors have the same tricky behavior with the AV-8B. Wings cannot create lift at low speed so tilting the rotors must be executed before slowing down prior to approach angle
@rpf276

The coaxial drive contra-rotating rotors still make the Sikorsky models a true helicopter unlike the tilt wings. Speed isn't everything instant low speed maneuverability front back side to side, no need to tilt the fuselage to move like a traditional helicopter with slower response, hovering and remaining stationary while the nose is pointed down, the Sikorsky is the one for me.

The Bell V-280 is the clear choice for the U.S. military ... I hope. I would love to see more powerful engines to increase the altitude and esp. the speed to 400-plus MPH esp. if that could be the cruising speed with a maximum of well over that and which is possible without jet engine thrust. Wider wings by just as few inches would increase range too with little extra drag, no doubt. (Not a helicopter but for the same purpose or replacement of vertical lift/landing craft.)

It seems to me that the helicopter format has exhausted its potential. A helicopter will always be limited in regards to speed & altitude. Many executives make use of both helicopters & business jets or at least business planes to travel as they need. Obviously combining those two functions in one craft has enormous potential. What I am wondering is why hasn't a larger version of this kind of craft been developed? Something of small or medium air liner size w/ maybe 4 tiltrotors would seem to have a big pay off, it seems so to me.

Two modified Viper engines or two redesigned Little Bird engines putting out record setting forward thrust. (Also, 2 side mounted forward facing M102’s out of the AC130, GAU-8 nose mounted cannon, up to 16 SDBs or 16 Hellfire or 4 2.75 rocket pods, or pair of quad MK-19 machine gun) Or a MH-65 upgraded to four total engines and two smaller radius side by side mounted main rotors for lift and maneuvering; the rear rotor would stay just cuz it looks 😎. 5 person aircraft crew, 18 floor loaded strike infantry or passenger area converted to SDB, DAP munitions bay akin to fixed wing bombers

Due to the limitations set bhthe laws of physics, helicopters cant be fast as jet sircract and still be considered a jet aircraft. If it has more than just the rotors on the front its a vtol.

None of these are as fast as a jet aircraft. Some of these are even slower than a jet idol speed.

I WONDER,why there is no turbofan were use to make a VTOL aircraft rather all was a turboshaft propeller were being use... Is there someone knows why? Is it the engine cost? Capability of VTOL Performance? speed? In any reason turbofan could produce more total net thrust compare to split-shaft turbofan.. hmmmmmm ..any professional here?

Seems like a synthetic voice and it's really off-putting. If this is the real voice of the narrator...I suggest finding another voice or another job. LOL. Also..I find that the flight of the Sikorsky Defiant is all animated. The glorious animations that were shown are all theater. The V280 , in the realm of the new FVL project has proven itself. I am anxious to see what he Defiant has to offer. The raider also has potential as a light attack.

The AW609, and V-280, like the V-22 Ospray are NOT helicopters! They're airplanes! A helicopter has main rotor blades which lead / lag (horizontally forward and aft), and flap (vertically up and down). Which those propeller-driven tuna cans don't. Yeah the pilots who fly those would love to think they're helicopter pilots, but they're not. Just because it can do VTOL doesn't make it a helicopter ffs! Or wait, does that mean the Harrier and F22 and F35 are also helicopters? SMH get it right please.

There is no such thing as the Sikorsky SB one defiant. You need to learn to read properly. The official name is SB >1 Defiant, thats SB greater than one....A stupid name, but thats what they called it. Also, tilt rotor craft are not helicopters.
