Yes, Duane Jones and George Romero were friends and the ending was meant to make a political statement. With that said, the lead role was not meant for an African-American actor and what happens wouldn’t have been so shocking if a white actor had played it. Jones was the best actor Romero had available in his pool of actor friends.

Two cool facts I love is that 1. The mask from Eyes Without a Face directly inspired John Carpenter when writing Halloween (1978) and he said that he wrote the detail in the script of ‘a mask with the pale, neutral features of a man’ which of course became the iconic altered Captain Kirk mask directly thanks to the mask from Eyes Without a Face and 2. Night of The Living Dead (1968) is actually a movie that is in the public domain, the original title was Night of The Flesh Eaters but due to a different movie having a similar title (that movie being The Flesh Eaters from 1964) but when the change was made to the title for the opening credits they had completely neglected to put the copyright symbol on the title card meaning that George A Romero (creator of Zombies as we know them today and the director of the movie) didn’t own the idea anymore and never did again

My favorite film from this year has to be Night of the living Dead from 1968. Alot people will pick Hitchcock though. But without NOTLD we wouldn't have Zombies. I can't live in a world without Zombies. Thank you George A. Romero. Godfather is so overrated. It's good. Not to mention all the social commentary in George's films, especially NOTLD.

Night of the Living Dead: I loved Ben, and yes I hated the female lead too. I also hated all the supporting characters. I found them all annoying. I actually prefer the remake from the 90s. Carnival of Souls: I watched this one because someone recommended it on one of your previous videos. And I was not disappointed. The Birds: I too watched this one as a kid. And yea flock of birds, same.

It’s interesting that one of your complaints for a lot of these movies is that they are slow, dragged in the middle, or was too long, but your number one pick was The Birds. It’s a great movie, but it is a slow movie that mostly focuses on a “will they, won’t they” romance plot. Which admittedly Hitchcock knew that you had to have the audience care about the characters or else they won’t care about what happens to the characters. But come on halfway through the movie you forget it supposed to be about birds.

One fun connection on your list is that William Castle was a big reason the film adaptation of Rosemary’s Baby got made at all. After reading the novel, he bought the rights himself, hoping to direct. The studio would only green-light the project if he found another director; they didn’t think he was a “serious” enough horror director for the story so they went with Polanski. Castle stayed on behind the scenes as a producer and has a cameo in the film (the creepy guy waiting outside the phone booth while Rosemary calls her own doctor for help).

Did anyone else notice that in The Birds, when the birds attack, only red head kids get hurt? 😂 I think some of the Hammer horror Dracula films were pretty hardcore for the 60’s. Another really good Mario Bava film I like from the 60’s is Kill, baby kill! Another important horror film from the 60’s is Blood Feast. Which is not a good film, but important for laying the foundation for gore in films.

I agree about the 60s getting more psychological. After the high-concept sci-fi horror of the 50s, the 1960s definitely seemed to take a step back to say: Actually, you know what's really scary? We are. People are. The decade had a lot of creepy killers in Psycho, Peeping Tom, Repulsion, and other movies. If you haven't seen them, I recommend a couple of Vincent Price movies: Last Man on Earth and Masque of the Red Death. Also, you might want to see two movies that are the great-grandparents of the creepy Japanese horror movies of the 2000s: Onibaba and Kuroneko. Plus, you really should watch Audrey Hepburn in Wait Until Dark.

Last Man on Earth is excellent, I think Kylie Roseanne would really like that one. YT has both the b&w and colorized version here.

The commentary at the end of Night the living dead was completely intentional. There are a lot of good documentaries and interviews with George Romero about this. Romero has a lot of progressive themes in his movies. Fear of the government police and the establishment are reoccurring themes in his films, as well as the mob mentality.

Definitely understand and respect why you don’t particularly love Rosemary’s Baby. Its my number one favorite 60’s horror movie though, I think it’s a masterpiece. The gender politics might seem outdated by today’s standards, but at the time it was quite a feminist message. The way the horror is basically coming from the aspect of men controlling women’s bodies. Also I’m able to enjoy the film way more knowing that the film is pretty much scene for scene the same as the book. Roman Polanski barely even had any creative input with the story. The author of Rosemary’s Baby joked that Polanski didn’t realize he could change aspects of the novel through adaptation lol

However, you can thank "Blow Up" for all the nudity that came into movies right after, it basically ended the Hayes Code that had been in place since the early 30s. Where would our 80s slashers movies be without nudity? lol./Shocked "Eyes Without A Face" or "Village Of The Damned" didn't make the list. Shocked "The Alphabet" DID make the list! Again, never thought of it as a horror movie.....although it IS super creepy!

Hi Haunted Hippie, Hitchcock's "The Birds" is one of my favorite 60s movies too (I grew up in the 60s) because it was partly inspired by the true events of a mass bird attack on the seaside town of Capitola in California on August 18, 1961. However, loved all the other movies on your top 10 list especially the Joan Crawford ones and Hitchcock's "Psycho". In addition, I thought the 1964 film, "The Horrors At Party Beach" would at least make number 21 on your list (it had a bad plot point but good horror fun--the critics didn't like it because it was independently made by some background actor named Del Tenney from Connecticut who was dubbed the 2nd Ed Wood). ♥

Some great movies but a very skewed order. Delighted to meet someone I could so disagree with. yet appreciate. The sixties produced some wonderful movies, Carnival of Souls was a favorite. It played like a Twilight Zone story, The Haunting was remarkable with Julie Harris leading a stellar cast. I saw The Innocents in a theater with my Grandma, She hated it but I was captivated with the eerie mood it set. I loved Rosemary's Baby. it was a New York location that made it beautiful to watch. I had read the book, The movie was faithful to the source., No other movie frightened me more than Living Dead. Everything went wrong. Amazing and horrifying, Disturbing on all levels. Castle was the king of gimmicks. I loved going to his movies as a kid. My favorite was, The Tingler. After Psycho, you would be surprised how many motel showers were passed up. A most shocking unexpected murder.

I really like your presentation and thoughtful commentary. I do think, however, that it would make more sense to call the video "Top 10 American Horror... " as you don't include any of the now highly thought of Hammer and Amicus British movies, with lauded actors such as Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Vincent Price actually came to England to make movies.

I enjoy the 60s quite a lot, but I think I like the 50s more overall, although the 60s has Vincent Price in House of Usher which I love. I actually enjoyed the Haunting quite a bit when I watched it a couple years ago. I don't think I ever saw it before and while it a few issues, I found it very cool and indeed felt that the one woman was interested in the other. Haven't seen the Brain that Wouldn't Die in years; I should watch it again. My number one from the 60s is House of Usher with Vincent Price from 1960. The main 'hero' character isn't the best acted, but Price as Roderick Usher is brilliant and it's a great watch!
