We saw a couple of these beauties fly over our property in northwest NSW a few months back. They're an awesome sight. 🤩🤩

I watched the development of the F-111C in the 60s and 70s, the delays, costs, it seemed like we would never get it home. When we did, it was awesome and well worth the money. I watched the development of the Wedgetail Radar in the 80s and 90s and also the platform it rides on, and it seemed like dejavu. Would we ever get it home? Every time we got the design right, technology changed and we had to start again. I am so proud of every Aussie who worked on the Wedgetail project, and very proud of the men and women of the RAAF who crew this magnificent platform. "it can hear a Sparrow fart in Indonesia" I am reliably informed.

Seattle in '03, visiting a friend who'd grown up there (met at Melb Uni), during the Wedgetail & VIP 737 build, met many Aussies involved at social and other events. My take. Aussies and Americans are particularly close (no geographically) but as friends, albeit with differences as to what is 'ironic'.

I Started my own top 10 list as an internal bet with my wife so far i got the lancaster and catalina (not in order but they were on my list) but have missed the wedgie and se5.a .. great choice.. this is a great way to commemorate 100 years...:) ok here goes.. my original top ten list.. 10 f-18 superhornet 9 Caribou 8 Catalina \ Lancaster 7 C-17 Globemaster 6 Hercules (all variants) 5 F-86 CAC Sabre 4 Bristol Beaufighter 3 Dassault Mirage III 2 General Dynamics F-111 1 F-35 OK i cheated on point 8 but i couldnt split them. Didnt find room for the Kittyhawk, or the hurricane but ten is a small number.. Looking forward to the top 5..

Going alright there so far Andrew! Top 5 starts next Wednesday, and maybe there will be another one you can tick off - who knows... 😉

Kittyhawk deserves a run as it served us well during the most challenging year in the Desert War and New Guinea. I would team up the Catalina with the Sunderland (My father flew in both during the war). F35 - not yet. Mirage wold not be on my list - wold prefer the Canberra bomber as it served on ops and we lost crew in it. I would like to see the RAAF do a history on the AFC / RAAF Squadron histories. PS - I like your list

@@markkeily2827 thanks.. i must admit a mirage fixation, my father worked on them through the 70's and i grew up around the bases watching them fly...and as for the list, try one for yourself, even if you dont publish it ..its harder than you think :) I second you thoughts on a squadron history.. even in this 5 minute video format. My father was in 76 and 77 squadrons so i know a bit about 77 but not the others.. cheers

Bruh!?!?, Like no offence but the top is f-111 and the F-18 Super Hornet and F-35 are just recent aircraft and don’t deserve to be iconic aircraft yet.

@@AusAirForce Its and interesting question,.....very subjective. But I have to confess I was surprised the Wedgetail was selected,...as a top 10 iconic aircraft. Brilliant, yes,...technologically incredibly advance,......sought after by our Allies,....but iconic?? For what its worth,..here is mine: F111 - has to be the top of the heap in my view. Spitfire - RAAF SQNs in Blighty/Europe and the Far East P40 - Extensive history in the SW pacific and Mediterranean. Canberra - 2 SQN, which had the most operational service (Malaya and Vietnam) of any Bomber SQN, post war globally till the war on terror. Mirage III - Just looks the goods and the first Mach 2 Jet in Australian Service. F18 Classic - Extensive Operational service. Caribou - The RAAF still cannot find a worthy replacement for it. UH1 - Extensive Service Vietnam War. Lancaster - Australia's commitment to Bomber Command was extensive and this was the chosen workhorse. Beaufort - Made Australia's own in the Pacific.

@@christianoakley1686 It is certainly very subjective, as you've said. That's a great list you have there, what we can say for sure is that we've had more than just 10 iconic aircraft over the years! The top 5 starts next week so stay tuned.

@@AusAirForce Very true,...and thats the problem. So many great aircraft for just 10 spots. Fun though and you wont keep everyone happy. I guess there is a tendency to go towards more modern or contemporary aircraft,.........which is a shame,...but thats the reality.

"the most advanced AEW&C in Australia" in the world it at least one more advanced, in UAE and Sweden, which already had a very advanced one in operations when the wedge tail project started 1996. Israel had their own construction at the same time. Today Sweden and UAE use Globaleye with GaN tech and all theatre surveillance, communication and EW at very long distances with with precisions.
