Top 10 Influencers

Did you click the title thinking I'd be bashing 10 reviewers? Think again, I'm exposing more than 10 here.

I've been around long enough to see frag comm member attack each in specific and general ways. Whenever a reviewer/influencer does an expose video on another reviewer or influencer, 9 times out 10 it's just hate, inadequacy, and bitterness masquerading as truth-telling. This also applies to self-proclaimed truth-tellers who habitually warn others about evil and greedy reviewers. Their warnings are as dishonest as those they are warning against. Are SOME reviewers on KZbin just paid shills for fragrance companies? Are their recommendations influenced by the free suff they get? Undoubtedly. Can this be generalized to reviewers who make content regarding compliment getters, panty droppers, Top 10, or whatever eye-catching title? Absolutely not. This genre of fragrance content has been around forever. I tend to think that newcomers to the frag community are drawn to such videos. These videos are algorithm-friendly & popular for a reason. But painting compliment videos or Top 10 videos with a broad brush, insinuating that they are suspect and untrustworthy (i.e. result of free bottle & market campaign) just betrays a sense of bitterness, condescension, and yes, dishonesty. I think it's enough to emphasize the importance of trusting your own nose, not blind-buying (unless you can afford to), and just cultivating a sense of skepticism about reviewers with whom you are not familiar. The criticism of influencers in this video projects a combination of saviour complex, guru complex, and holier-than-thou complex. OGs and newbies will invariably find this off-putting.

Man, you really think that pumping list after list of nonsense, with questionable recommendations is something innocent? Unless they put a disclaimer at the start saying here is a list of the brands that paid the most at the moment, they are being dishonest and deserve no respect. Dude influencers and reviewers are not the same thing. There are some persons that come right out and say there are influencers and kudos to them from being upfront. However, there are others are influencers who pose as reviewers whe they are not. They are easy to spot....they will claim a fragrance is 10 out of 10 and for the rest of the year never shows up on their channel no matter what. They also know they will never buy the fragrance with thier own money no matter what score they give it. Robes always gets the hater label when pointing out what persons in the community should be careful of and he has been proven right all the time.

You can't do that once money are involved, or other forms of reward. I used to watch robes08 about 10 years ago and I keep coming back even if I don't have the same fragrance profile as he does. He's still my number 1 reviewer. He is one of the founding fathers of the community, but money are always changing the course of any primary vision. Keep going, Marc!

Really appreciate your honesty here 🍻 Another way we can tell there's a campaign is when a few different influencers come out with the same type of Top 10 list at the same time, and all had included " this amazing cheap fragrance I just forgot about, and smells like niche / on par with the big boys! " ALL with a coupon code just for that particular fragrance directly from the manufacturer. It feels kinda gross having to be frag police. I don't want to keep score like that, yet here we are 😧

Finally someone is talking about this, my first fragrance was blue jeans, before the internet started having fragrance communities i used to go every now and then and just test the fragrances, Middle eastern, Eastern, European, designer, niche you name it, i used to visit my mother and see her having unlimited supplies of oils and different qualities of alcohol she used to create fragrances, I'd go back playing my N64 when i grew a little older i asked her mom why do you do this ? She said well I make extra money aside, no no when you're happy or when you're sad why do you go to your fragrance room lock yourself in and create scents ? She said perfumery is silent poetry there's alot of feelings and emotions goes in that bottle, when i turned 20 she gave me bottle of one the fragrances she created, and that time i knew exactly what she meant, it's art, it's like cooking with love from your spouse or mother vs ordering Italian to go, those "influencers" don't have conscience, fame and publicity and money made them greedy, they don't explore deep fragrances they just wanna make money, and i have seen those younger ones and unfortunately older ones who say hey i wanna buy a house and service my Ferrari so buy my fragrance, it got to this point and this level of low, no matter what you drive and how you live and if that's your approach you lack character you became greedy and untrustworthy, unfortunately so many people save up their hard earned money and get that one fragrance those lowlifes hype up and get so disappointed, the very wealthy will never watch any reviews on MFK or Tom Ford they will just visit their nearest boutique and sniff sniff sniff and buy them, the majority of people who watch those reviews are the hard working people who need that beauty in life that wordless silent poetry, the only 2 things will bring back memories is music and scents, i have alot of love and respect for Marc because he'll review 20 dollars fragrance if he liked it and when he review a super expensive fragrance like FM that is half the price of my car he would do it in a way not for you to go crazy and wanna buy it just a journey of how it smells he ain't trying to sell it and make you bankrupt the way he does it, i guess they call it emotional intelligence, well he's reaction to issey miyaki made go hunting for it 10 years ago lol but issey miyaki on discount is affordable, the titles that say the most complimented or the sexiest panty dropping that's all bullshit, i seen reviewers who don't look approachable yet they always get complimented, understand this if a person needs a reason to socialize or flirt with you the best and safest approach is your fragrance, fragrances are so personal to each individual, my neighbor whenever she's having an alright day there's bergamot and citrus note her perfume, whenever she's happy i get a vanilla note from her perfume, and i guarantee you this she's not even aware of it, and whenever i wear neroli portofino or something fresh she's formal on her approach and that's a expensive fragrance, but when i wear something musk or something with vanilla in it like insurrection reyane tradition which on discount for 14 to 16 bucks and she's more talkative and social with me and smiles and laughs, I don't know if there's a study on this or not, but don't buy into the hype understand what notes make you happy that you enjoy and not the people around you then go and watch reviews of people with trusted nose people like Robes08 and there's this new guy who came in and disappeared who had a very reliable nose he really knows how to break down notes and never hype things up him being genuine never got love and views from the community, when liars and money hungry greedy dangerous people appear they get all the views and subs, check out he's channel My2scents I don't agree with everything he like but appreciate he's approach, find your notes your style then go watch a reliable reviewer, all that best complimented, sexiest fragrance for men that'll cream her pants that's all bullshit, it's all you my friend it's your manners and character that'll attract a nice guy or girl, if you hold up a good manner and character no one can talk behind your back without someone defending you, if you shit and wear the most expensive fragrances in the world people will still smell your shit, if I'll watch the top lists I'll watch roboes08 because i know he's nose and i know what he likes some of them I don't like some of them I'm crazy about, so if i watched he's top summer or winter or most worn i know which to avoid from his list and which to look into, i been watching he's videos from the very beginning, anyways folks don't buy into those influencers bullshit understand your attractions to notes, test them buy them if you wanna watch reviews look into someone reliable and money hungry

Honestly I don't judge, I work for many clients in the graphic design side of things alongside the marketing departments and they use promotion agencies since I can remember, so I don't see promotion as something wrong, it's just a strategy to sell, it's responsibility of the buyer to be informed before making a purchase, if you're naive or impulsive enough to buy SBoy for $300+ just cause someone promote it and give you a small discount bite 😬you can blame the universe for making the purchase, in the end the decision is yours and yours alone. This is the jungle, be careful. I watch fragrance videos for the interviews, to know about old and new fragrances, notes and materials used in the perfume industry and basically for entertainment and education, I know exactly what to take from each reviewer to make a more informed purchase or decide to get a sample before I pull the trigger on a full bottle, it's just common sense. I stopped listening to Dallas on Chaos Fragrances when he hyped Lattafa Ejaazi Intense Silver as one of the best Aqua Di Gio Profumo clones, and when I sniffed it, I found out it was not even as good as the original Ejaazi, and worst of all, has NOTHING to do with Aqua Di Gio Profumo in the first place! Suddenly, he was all over Lattafa Fragrances and all those cheap, crappy, Middle Eastern houses (I mean no offense here) that he and Ashton of Gents Scents used to call and bash them so much few years back! I doubt if I can trust so many of the reviewers/influencers again! Most of them are most likely SHILLS and LIARS (as Mr Smelly would like to put it!)!

The guy has about 10 video titles and 50 fragrances he's been recycling for years now, and he will literally say anything to make people click his affiliate links. He never delves deeper into a fragrance or fragrance house, nor does collabs with other people. It's just him rambling about his extremely repetitive top 10 lists each day, every day. This guy is a perfect example of a fragrance grifter.

Your channel not getting the attention it has deserved for so long is both a bad and a good thing imo. If this channel had blown up and became your main source of income you'd had to generate views to pay the bills and as I've heard from multiple influencer types (Mehdi, chaos frags and gents scents for example) reviews just don't bring in the views, they have to churn out the content the algorithm demands of them. I miss the old days of KZbin in general when it wasn't people's jobs, this website feels like one big office sometimes, everyone has to be PC and focus on revenue minus a little off the cuff chit chat at the water cooler.

All good, there's a small group that comes back on my channel and says the same things over and over about me, I have a big ego, im angry because i didnt blow up. Not knowing that my channel was and is built as a hobby channel, why would I be angry? That's all they think they have on me. My channel was the top fragrance channel at one point by mistake not by design.

Totally agree on this one. For those of us who have been collecting for a while, the influencers have become a popular thing. Everybody wants to be a perfume influencer. I can categorize them in the same venue as perfumes: Niche and designer. There are influencers that even denegrade being a women and their content is like hearing a tale of a (1 X) rated porn movie, or using Narcissistic lenguage. The worst is when Niche houses that once were innovators - creator - artists, sell their soul to these influencers.

I love smaller channels, some of the bigger channels like @joyamin and @iamnoelle are two at the moment that I enjoy. Joy is so innocent that he would never sugar coat anything and try to sell you something which I love, we don't have the same taste on many but I appreciate him. Noelle is new to me but I'm enjoying her content lately.

Marc I've been following you for well over 10 years (so that means the original videos before you had to redo then due to copyright etc). To me, you are the original, authentic fragrance reviewer. The bulk of the rest of the reviewers are bogus, doing it for clicks etc and not for passion. I took a hiatus from watching fragrance videos for a few years and returned recently...and the amount of bogus reviews that aren't authentic is insane. You can tell with the stupid sponsorships. click-bait titles and not to mention the asinine thumbnails some of them use. An unfortunate truth is that the youtube platform is killing itself. They are part to blame. The authentic stuff gets shoved lower and the stupid ones that "beat the algorithm" gets shown up top. Hope you continue your good works.

Happy to have you around. Honestly it does a disservice to themselves when this happens as you have zero idea the personality of the reviewer, the taste of the reviewer. I've seen so many reviewers hate a scent in a video one week and the next it's at the top of the list.. or it's a sponsored fragrance in one video and then you see it #1 in several top 10 videos. I don't see how you can respect and enjoy that content.

Remember when you tried a similarly passive aggressive approach around seven years ago to re-establish relevancy by attempting to discredit and feel superior to the frag content creators focused on a style of videos you don't approve of who were surpassing you (at the time, it was videos focused on compliments, in general, and Jeremy specifically with extremely thinly veiled shots in his direction all but naming him)? Your huge ego was bitter then about this space no longer seeking a "guru" to lead them, and clearly still is now. Everyone knows the state of the community has changed. You can't move past the fact that no one needs a washed up former top dog to point out how everyone else isn't as "real" and noble as him because his undisputed fragcomm king status expired a decade ago. Someone who wasn't salty about a company like Xerjoff not sending them bottles wouldn't feel the need to publicly air that one while simultaneously trying to convince viewers that it didn't actually bother them, by the way.

Ironic thing is even though Fragrance Guru was nickname, Robes was never actually a guru, for me guru if taken literally is not a good thing it's cult and group of followers, if anything Robes was always respecting other people journeys and diversity and trying to encourage others to follow own paths so that is contrary from being actual guru I always saw the name as 'just for fun'. Most of influencers actually are trying to be real guru's. Just my 2 cents, think lot of folks that still watch YT for the love of fragrances still watch this channel but it's pretty expectable to be minority, most stuff that are in trending in general are not that good or good quality.

@robes08 I guess that comment pinning games are what you have to play when you neither want to acknowledge the validity of a message nor are able to deny anything about it. It means nothing to me. What's winning is the truth I pointed out, as is evidenced by your going on eleven years (and counting) of being an afterthought in the community you seemed to think you should always be the head of.
