Some people grind their teeth when they're sleeping, or even when they're not sleeping, including clenching. All of these can lead to gum recession. Unfortunately, bruxism while sleeping can only be countered by wearing a mouthguard.

I got gum recession since early 20s from a bunch of orthodontic movement twice. Then I would always brush hard too. Glad to see this video since I've been using soft bristles manually for years now and it's been working great. No more bleeding gums. I had a sneaking suspicion hard brushing with hard bristles (despite package saying soft) weren't helping and my dentists never even mentioned anything about how to help with my gum recession. Asked my dental hygienist if brushing hard could have added to my gum recession and she said no.

Thank you for the video Dr. John, super informative! One follow up question - what is the correct way if we are not supposed to rinse with water after brushing? I feel like I need the water to get rid of the uncomfortable tiny debris in my mouth after brushing. Or should I be using mouthwash to rinse? Or not rinse at all and just spit?
@dr.johnyoo10 ай бұрын
yes, spit excess including residue. if uncomfortable with feeling, rinsing with a xylitol or fluoride mouthrinse helps. another option, which is more cumbersome but achieves same goal, is to brush, rinse, and then brush with a small amt of toothpaste again

2:50 "Brushing right after eating...wait 30 minutes" Why wait? I understand that pH levels may be too low after eating, but why not just rinse your mouth with water? This is basic chemistry: a cup full of water will IMMEDIATELY raise the pH in your mouth to at least 6.5. There's no reason to wait if you rinse your mouth. Also, once the toothpaste hits your teeth, the pH will also immediateley rise.
@whoisalken10 ай бұрын
I think that's exactly it. I'm not sure but maybe it is to raise the pH level, SLOWLY. if you rinse it with water it just instantaneously raises your mouth's pH level. im not sure tho.
@dr.johnyoo10 ай бұрын
great point!! love that you brought this up you're absolutely right in that the oral cavity pH will quickly restore with water/alkaline rinse, and is an effective hygiene habit. the reasons we wait, even after swishing, is that 1. the ENAMEL itself is still compromised temporarily and 2. certain microbia present in plaque can quickly produce acids after carbohyrate feeding. more details below: reason #1, the enamel becomes porous or "etched" with each acid exposure, depending on contact time and pH (i.e. sipping on lemon juice does more damage to enamel than drinking coffee) . habitually brushing the compromised enamel surface immediately after, even if the rest of the mouth has normal pH, abrades the enamel's surface. reason #2, certain carbs/sugars enable plaque bacteria to produce acids on enamel during and after feeding the guideline of waiting 30 min is a parameter to allow safer condition of enamel to be brushed, though there are ways to speed up the pH restoration in the meantime, as you mentioned. if it seems unrealistic to wait that long to brush however, as mentioned in the pro tip, we still do advise brushing. hope this clarifies, and thanks for bringing it up!

@dr.johnyoo10 ай бұрын
1. canine recession is the photo on the thumbnail. my canines looks like that lol.. normally if you see darker shade of tooth below the crown, that's the root being exposed (receding gums). easiest way to confirm is to ask your dentist if you have any signs of recession. sometimes they're localized (specific teeth, sometimes more generalized - throughout). more people get them on their canines 2. stainless steel lasts longer. i swap my plastic tongue scraper every time i swap brush head 3. ur right ! Laifen is a trusted Chinese tech/health devices company. i cant rebrand it , it's not mine lol 😂

@DimitriLyon10 ай бұрын
If we are not supposed to rinse right after brushing, how long do you recommend we delay rinsing? Also, do I follow up with a mouthwash after, or before brushing? Since some mouthwashes contain fluoride is it okay to rinse with water and then do the mouthwash to maintain the benefits of the fluoride? I find it hard to not rinse after brushing. The taste of the toothpaste just sitting there just feels unnatural.
@wolfferoni10 ай бұрын
If you're using a mouthwash with fluoride after brushing then yes, it's fine to rinse with water after brushing. Don't rinse after you use mouthwash though. I found it difficult to avoid rinsing after brushing too, felt a bit gross to me, but you get used to it over time. You could change the flavour of your toothpaste if you don't like the taste

Thanks for the video, it really helps. Is there a way to treat gum recession? Or what would happen to the teeth?
@dr.johnyoo10 ай бұрын
yes there are ways to treat recession, including gum grafting and pinhole surgery. teeth associated with gum recession may become more sensitive due to root exposure and gaps/pockets may form between teeth. elongated teeth (due to exposure of root) are considered less esthetic due to its increased prevalence with aging

what are your thoughts on interdental brushes instead of flossing? if I don't rinse my mouth right after brushing do I just spit out all the tooth paste and eventually swallow what I couldn't fully spit out? I rinse after brushing because I'm uncomfortable with the toothpaste still in my mouth 😭
@dr.johnyoo10 ай бұрын
interdental brushes are efficient in cleaning larger spaces, braces, and bridges, however the dental floss "breaks" through contacts between teeth and can effectively clean between tight spaces. both have their use cases. dont replace your flossing with interdental though, use as adjunct and yes spit excess. if uncomfortable with residue feeling, rinsing with a xylitol or fluoride mouthrinse helps

You have to change your diet to have low carb & no processed foods. That way your saliva is a mineralizing pH. It’s the food you eat that feed the cavity causing bacteria. Next is blood flow to your teeth by massaging your gums gently. Green juicing, minerals, Oil pulling & xylitol will help.

I didn’t even know half of these things, especially about the using electric toothbrushes on receding gums. All of the dentists I’ve had always told me to use the Sonicare toothbrush, but it was too abrasive and now I have a few places where my gums are receding. I switched to Oral-B and use an extra soft toothbrush head, but I might go back to manual brushing. I never had an issue with it. I just have an issue with dental hygienists not wanting to clean my teeth properly.

Poop particles and the like still get flung across the bathroom when the lid is down, it’s just in a different direction. So I’d say, while down before flushing is better, the best option would probably be to remove your toothbrush from your bathroom entirely. But then you’d have to work out safely storing it elsewhere so pick your battles I guess💁♀️

I used charcoal toothpaste for awhile too and I started to experience many issues that I didn’t have before. And when I switch to normal toothpaste, most issues has been improved. A shame my old dentist did not send me to a periodontist 4 years ago when I asked them why my gums were hurting and receding. Also wish I learned how to take care of my teeth properly years ago too! And my parents did not know any better because we have only ever had that dentist since they were Chinese and the language barrier in finding a new place. 😢thank you for all the tips. I use the Nimbus extra soft toothbrush and you’re saying I shouldn’t use an electric incl. the one you mention? I don’t scrap my tongue because I have Sjogrens and my mouth is really dry, I use my brush and scrap forward, is that enough? We should brush at a 45 degree angle in a circular motion and not touch the gums??? A really detailed demonstration would be soooo awesome! And can I just say, do other people not close the toilet lid? What? I grew up doing that and not doing it is just gross😮. What did you think the lid was for if you’re out closing it? Do you know how far those particles travel if you flush without shutting the lid? Srsly 6 feet. Ok TMI…

If you’re brushing away from the gums, wouldn’t you leave plaque behind on the gingival margins, which can cause the gums to recede as well?

nono, we certainly want to brush at the gumline. 45 degrees to the gums, short toothwide strokes, sweep away

Awesome video! Found you last week and have been changing dental hygiene habits already. Thanks! I do have a question: is a small amount of gum recession natural as we get older?
@dr.johnyoo10 ай бұрын
yes , great question. a survey found that 88% of patients 65+ had some form of gum recession, and it can hit any age. what we're trying to prevent is onset due to improper brushing habits. aging is a natural process of life, and we dont want to stress over things we cant control, so im glad you brought this up!

I have halitosis and recession 😢 What is recommended for a hole in rear molar that doesn't hurt when it's clean? And isn't fluoride toxic?

Had a friendly that literally had to have surgery for this problem I literally changed the angle of brushing after what happened to him.

good q . might be better to talk about dental practices in separate video. here is the latest data from American Dental Association on average revenue, income, and expenses for GP practitioners www.ada.org/-/media/project/ada-organization/ada/ada-org/files/resources/research/hpi/net_income_general_practitioner_dentists_2022.pdf?rev=cc58b9ecfbaf4e37bdb243eed848111c&hash=E354C6B2E7E06A270E7ED166408B6E28

Ughhh. For some reason Orthodontics had failed to inform their patient who are wearing braces about this gum recession. Of course, they wont let us know about this cuz of 💸.

I haven't ever flossed sadly. I've only had money problems and temp fills previously.. and dentist hygiene growing up.. was just poorly translated and scary. Almost in 30s and not even sure how to floss. Is there a video on your channel for example how to?
