The hardest thing to deal with as an American MLS fan is being chastised for following a league with no history... how can we get history if the rest of the world makes fun of us for trying to develop it? Thanks for making this video and showing a few of the big rivalries in the league that only get stronger with time and showing the world that we might not have hundreds of years of precedent, but we have passion and we're forging our path!

Coming from Seattle...playing a Portland or Vancouver soccer team is like playing against your cousin that you have love for but can't stand! Anyone that had been to a game against any of the three will not deny that there are true rivalries in the MLS that goes back before they were a part of the league.

Brilliant list, brother! Glad to see more exposure to these rivalries. As a SoCal native, it’s got to be El Trafico for me because even though it’s a new rivalry, every match has been bonkers. The first meeting this year was supposed to be at the Rose Bowl (neutral site) that seats 100,000 spectators. Got canceled for a really bad storm and has been moved to July 4th - Independence Day 🇺🇸 It should be chaos. That said, I’ve got to give it to Seattle, Portland and the Cascadia Cup for the moment. That’s the Grandaddy of them all. 🤙

I don’t know how much the Apple TV coverage has changed things this season but awareness of MLS over here is definitely growing in general. I think it’s a combination of things - the standard of the league is getting better, the fan culture is blossoming into something really cool and the whole package is just very slick (team shirts, stadiums, food etc). Respect for this video, as a Toronto supporter I have to say our rivalry with Montreal is based on genuine dislike and historical and cultural differences between the 2 cities. There was a fight in the stands between supporters in this years Canada Cup match in Toronto, and these 2 played one of the best home and away ties in MLS playoffs in the semi finals in 2016, check that out. Both games were instant classics, with Toronto going down 0-3 in the first half of the leg in Montreal only to get 2 away goals in the second half and win the second leg 5-2 at home in extra time. That, along with our MLS Cup win in 2017 still leaves a bitter taste in Montreal mouth to this day. Forever in our Shadow!

There could be a whole video for several of these, but the Orlando v ATL one is a lot of fun. Atlanta travels REALLY well to many places, but Orlando is a big one. The ATL FO even got a billboard next to the stadium for the first game that had Atlanta players and said "We are here to Conquer." And they did. So many fun matches: Will's scream about a non-foul. Tito hit a worldly to break Orlando hearts. Orlando SGs trashed an ATL tailgate and stole a banner like high school kids. They made their tifo a Walking Dead tribute that targeted an ATL SG (which was actually really well done.) While they are 7hr apart, they were the only teams in the south, and each other's closest away match. The rivalry would actually be one of the best, if Orlando had beaten ATL even once in the first couple thousand matches. Oh, well.

Orlando's dislike for Atlanta starts because there was a friendship between the supporters of Orlando City when we were minor league from 2011-2014 and the previously existing (and forced to close) Atlanta club, Atlanta Silverbacks. when Arthur Blank threw his NFL money at the league, the league forced the silverbacks to close (as is common with big money expansion franchises coming to cities where there already exists a team that's non MLS such as whats happening to San Diego, what has happened to St Louis and Atlanta). Atlanta came into the league on that silverspoon and with their goofy sounding chants, were backed by the league as the poster child of MLS supporter culture, which pissed us off. I wont take away that they could afford to put better talent on the field than our broke Brazilian paymasters and beat our ass the first 3-4 years of their existence, but they havent been shit since Tata Martino's influence and squad slowly but surely scattered from the club. they still spend top dollar, but havent won shit since the open cup 2019 with the majority of that 2018 championship squad still intact. TLDR, they came with big money and cleared out an existing culture, while demonstrating no understanding of supporter culture and that rubbed Orlando supporters the wrong way. cheers from an Orlando supporter. @@FootballWeekender

As an Orlando City supporter, the thing about Orlando City-Atlanta United rivalry, the main dislike towards Atlanta United is that the majority of Orlando City fans dislike them because they are seen as a plastic club, like they were literally created from scratch when the league granted an expansion team to Atlanta, even in a way driving the Atlanta Silverbacks out of existence in the process. Orlando City on the other hand has a history from before it joined MLS, and a successful one at that. There's also the Florida-Georgia rivalry that already exists from other sports, especially in college sports. Side Note: I'm sure if you polled Orlando supporters, there'd probably be a split as to who's the bigger rival between Atlanta United and Inter Miami.

Great List. Mixing in the Modern & Old Rivalries. Yes the Atlanta vs Orlando Rivalry was fabricated since we were the only Clubs in the Southeast at the time. Now that Rivalry doesn't have as much importance anymore since we now have Nashville & Charlotte while Orlando has Miami.

Another one that seems to really only be talked about by the fans of the two clubs is Real Salt Lake and Sporting Kansas City. Back in 2011 the teams met in a preseason match that ended early due to a bench clearing brawl. Teams haven't like each other since. I know a lot of RSL fans (myself included) put the rivalry with SKC above the one with Colorado. The two also had a crazy MLS Cup Final match in 2013 that SKC won in penalties.

As an American who watches MLS very closely, I don't disagree with anything on your list. My club is Atlanta and yeah, the rivalry with Orlando was definitely manufactured at first. It definitely grew beyond that fairly quick though. I live by Orlando (and after spending most of my childhood in Atlanta) and even supported Orlando to a degree before Atlanta got a team. When Atlanta first played at Orlando, some of the Lions fans actually engaged in unprovoked attacks on Atlanta supporters. To be fair, it was only a small number and doesn't reflect their support-base as a whole, but it definitely added some fuel to the fire of the rivalry for me. Little things here and there have added to it more, and even with some other clubs around now that are closer to Atlanta - like Charlotte and Nashville - the rivalry with Orlando has its own charms. The two best rivalries from my perspective are Seattle vs Portland and LAFC vs LA Galaxy. I make it a point never to miss those.

A non-MLS derby that might potentially be an MLS derby One day is Birmingham legion FC versus Memphis 901 FC. Two very close cities in the deep south. It’s pretty small because it’s in the USL championship, but for fans of these teams this is the game that is circled on the calendar. This is the game that bring the largest crowds of the season for either team.

I agree with nine of your selections. I don’t think that there is as much to Atlanta United versus Orlando city as you let on. Atlanta United versus Charlotte FC is a completely different story! These two cities and states have rivalries in almost every sport. There have been than incidences in all three meetings thus far. Both play in two of the largest capacity stadiums in the league, and both fan bases completely show out. The cities are also much closer to each other than Atlanta and Orlando are. It’s a darn shame that this one didn’t make the list. These two teams, and these two Fanbases absolutely hate each other! As a Charlotte FC fan who has been to all three meetings between these teams, home and away, I think I am qualified to make that statement.

Chocago fans was rowdy at the time until Chicago Fire have a new ownership. That new ownership banned their own fan supporters group called section 8 Chicago for no reason, rebranding their crest twice and added FC on the crest which the Fire fans turned against the organization.
