Trails of Cold Steel is fantastic and I highly recommend giving it a chance if you have the time to spend. It is admittedly an almost 400+ hour experience for CS1-4, and some would even say you should start with Sky, which would drastically bump up the time frame.

​@@nya27I like the gameplay 😀 It is pure turned based combat and the fact that you can move around your characters on the battlefield, adds another layer of strategy. The games are though enough for me on normal, so think twice before choosing a harder setting.

Honestly for turn-based RPGs, nothing scratches the itch like FFX, even though it's a pretty old game, I'd recommend anyone to play it. As a plus, it probably has the best soundtrack of any game ever made, seriously, there are so many memorable melodies that just knock it out of the park

People seriously need to give some love to Rise of the Third Power. It's production values aren't that high, but it's story, characters, & world-building are superb! Along with a solid turn-based battle system.

Wasn't expecting to see a RotTP shout-out here. It's a great game! Also not technically a JRPG since the devs are American, but that didn't stop Sea of Stars from making this list, so fair play. I consider it the best 7.5/10 I've ever played. Not quite a masterpiece, but so far above anything I expected from it.

Trails is my favorite series but it really is best (though not 100% necessary) to start with Trails in the Sky. That's the best way to get the whole story. But so long as you start at the first game in an arc you won't miss way too much.

It might not be necessary, but I do think it is important. I started with Cold Steel 1&2, but I was confused at some parts of the games. When I decided to play the Liberl and Crossbell games before starting Cold Steel 3, everything just made a lot more sense.

I think the stigma of mobile games is most are but I feel like there are some with actual substance. I played HSR from day 1 and honestly it's easily my favorite gacha. Even without spending crazy amounts of money

Brother, you HAVE to play the Legend of Heroes series. If you love these kinds of games then I believe you would love the Trails series too. Forget the hype and give it a shot so you can make your own opinion. Either way I’m glad I just stumbled on your channel and you have a new subscriber because you have good taste. I started with Cold Steel too and I agree that Cold Steel 1 starts slow because of all the world building but I stuck with it and ended up enjoying it a lot. So much so that after playing Cold Steel 2 I went back and played the previous five while waiting for Cold Steel 3 to be released. Now I’m waiting for Daybreak which is the tenth game. You have a lot of Trails to get through lol.

So I didn’t play a lot of different JRPGs growing up but I’m diving into more as an adult. DQ 11 and Persona 5 are my default favorites because I haven’t played any of the others in the franchise. How about you?

I remember when i quit playing Dragon Quest 11 for a month because i couldn't defeat Mordegon. When I was ready to get back to the game, I finally managed to beat him with Erik, who was also the only one alive, with very low hp.

The Legend of Heroes sounds good, but it's too much of a commitment. They're like 3 games minimum to finish a story arc and I'm pretty sure trails of cold steel is like 5 games.

At least female characters in HSR are more interesting to me, than in Genshin. 🙈 But I still agree that we need more male characters. At least we got aventurine recently 🥹❤️

I'll be very honest, I will only recommend the Cold Steel games if you don't mind current era anime tropes, waifus and harem plot-lines. the story has its high and lows and most of the payoff comes from playing the older games and catching the references and connecting the points of the greater plot, so it's very hit or miss. Also be prepared to invest a lot of time just with the Erebonia games. Trails games are known to be huge time sinks, more than the usual jrpg

After doing some more research I see a lot of people say similar things. Like Cold Steel is a solid entry point if you care about graphics but its WAY better to start at the beginning. I just wish the earlier games weren't only on PC.

played Octopath 1 and I did manage to complete the game with true final boss but I struggled and frustrated with random encounter because it's annoying sometime I go back to explored area and waste too much time with random encounter. I got octo 2 but these time I quit.

Sadly, I've already played them all (except Honkai: Star Rail since I refuse to support any GACHA). They all have their strengths and flaws, but personally, none encapsulates the magic of the genre better than Dragon Quest XI. The only thing I can criticize is that it has a super childish design and I am a grown ass adult (Yes, I understand that the design is characteristic of Dragon Quest and its artistic director R.I.P.). You can imagine how thirsty I may be for Dragon Quest XII since a more adult design was precisely what was promised

Gacha is not really a genre or is it? HSR is easily one of the best RPGs with a incredible and story all for FREE. You can just play the game normally and you can still beat the main story.

Legend of heroes series is only for people that love world building over anything else and like to read like a LOT like a fucking TON LOT and don't mind anime cliches, excessive exposition and more often than not useless and waste of time dialogue (Like genshin impact but a bit better) SMT know for depth story telling? hahahahahha no, that's not true at all, SMT IV is the exception and even so the story is not that depth but the story goes to place, is engaging, fun and do makes you question stuff lets say is deep enough. DQ XI no complaints just overall superb Jrpg and is a classic, but many people hate the 3rd act (post game) I have no issues but I get the hate. Like a Dragon or yakuza 7? Sure but is a bit too grindy but is challenging enough Like a dragon infinity wealth seems to be a mix bag, some say is amazing, others that is a downgrade to the previous one and game is not as challenging as the first....hmm I really don't know, I haven't beat it yet so be mindful. Persona 5/Royal going to be frank Royal is a joke, Vanilla is better if you want a challenge and is the harder version to platinum, secret boss is also more difficult so is up to you. Bravely default 2, pretty much inferior to the 1st game and Second in almost every way.

Don't think you'll like SMT V just because you like other Atlus titles. It's boring and tedious, with no story to speak of and limited interaction with other characters. Also, Chained Echoes has a mediocre plot with one of the worst endings in the genre.
