I think I understand why we differ a bit… When I think of “Clutch”, being a big game performer means just as much, if not MORE than simply making clutch shots. This list is a combination of those 2 things, but I probably put an even greater emphasis on being a big game performer. The funny thing is that I completely agree with your top 3 IF we’re going SPECIFICALLY by Clutch Shot Makers…. Honestly I might have to do that Top 10 at some point, because almost everything would be different. Jordan, Kobe and Bird at the top, guys like Hakeem, Russell and Duncan fall out of the top 10. Guys like Damian Lillard and Robert Horry move into the Top 10.

Charles getting MVP spurred MJ on in the finals against the Suns. There was no way MJ was going to walk away from that series without winning the championship. Still hurts to think about that.

@J24J Well tbh if you go back and look M.J was robbed for MVP that year and when you look what you'll find is Barkley was the 3rd best player that year and won the MVP. If you don't wanna do ya research go look through Jimmyxhighrollers vids and you'll see a video where he talks about who was the real MVP of each season and how quite a few people throughout the years got robbed lol. So I think MJ took it personal when they gave Barkley that MVP tbh

@TheRealMindCrimeАй бұрын
that's true about IT. I forget about that sometimes. He did amazing things on one foot in the clutch
@OlJackBurtonАй бұрын
that was the 3rd quarter. 11 points were on the bad ankle. you need more than 1 moment (losing) though. otherwise LeBron would be clutch immortal because of 29 of 30 team points in Game 5, 4th quarter and overtime win against Detroit in 2007 ECF...
@jimmybrooks2000Ай бұрын
@@OlJackBurton That was a single moment I pointed out. Isiah Thomas has numerous clutch moments. Most people just don't know how clutch Isiah Thomas was
@OlJackBurtonАй бұрын
@@jimmybrooks2000 i guess i might be one of those people then lol. i don't know a single signature truly clutch playoff moment/game from Isiah. it could very well exist. all that's really said about him is the sprained ankle game. but i don't consider a 3rd quarter explosion really clutch. the game is far from settled at that point. extremely gutsy yes it was. and he did put the team on his back and bad ankle. so he often carried such a heavy load despite being on a very deep team. they still lost in the 4th quarter (the clutch) with multiple opportunities to win (offense and defense) including the final possession. Isiah didn't come through then with the game hanging in the balance. maybe the 1988 ECF against Boston, especially Game 1. the 1989, 1990 and 1991 ECFs and 1988 2nd round against the Bulls were just ugly, if not dirty basketball imo, and Isiah didn't play particularly that well against Chicago in any of those series. but most of the Bulls also played poorly/ugly. that was just the way that the Pistons made you play. the rest of the of 1989 playoffs reminded me of the 2024 Boston entire playoffs, except the Pistons even got a huge injury break in the Finals as well with both Magic and Byron on torn hamstrings before the Finals even started. yeah, i know Luka was banged up, but the 2024 Celtics only had Porzingis for a couple games too. i guess the 1990 Finals against Portland, which was actually a lot closer than the 4-1 result would indicate. 3 of those wins were in the low single digits and he finally got his Finals MVP. but i don't see anything inevitable from Isiah like MJ was during practically his entire dual threepeats. MJ just had this inevitability around him during most of the 90s. he knew he was going to win, and the opposing team knew he was going to win and MJ knew the other team knew lol. or even the 13 points (all the team points too) in 33 seconds by T-Mac, which was the most clutch moment i've ever seen in NBA history even if it was just the regular season. that was will and clutchness over impossible odds and the basketball gods thankfully rewarded T-Mac and gifted us that moment...
@jimmybrooks2000Ай бұрын
@@OlJackBurton In 1987 he scored a game winning layup on the hawks in the playoffs. In 1988 he hit a game winner on the bullets in the playoffs. In 1989 he scored 16 in the 4th quarter to eliminate the bulls. He hit a game winner to eliminate the nets in 1985. He has other games where he just turned it up a notch all the way through. Bird at #5 is an insult to Bird. Johnny is usually spot on with his lists but I disagree with this entirely. Especially with Magic at #3 = From Magic's book titled "Touch" pages 74-76 Magic himself about the last shot of a game wrote " Kareem was the 1st option, Jamaal 2nd and Norm 3rd. I was not ready. I was scared to go for it. For so many years I wasn't that guy. I just got crumbs, but that was cool; that was all I wanted. But that attitude caught up with me in 1984 when I had the low points in my career vs Boston in the Finals." This was after Magic had completed 5 seasons. Compare this to Bird = who was the go to player on Boston from day 1 and year 1. Johnny needs to fix this IMO. Magic also had a very poor playoff performance in the 1981 vs Houston = final game in LA and Magic shot 2 for 14 and was 6 of 11 with freethrows = missed 2 FT late in the game and on the last possession shot an air ball. In the 1983 Finals where LA got swept 4-0 Magic set an NBA record with 24 turnovers in 4 games and shot 40.3% . Compare these players to Bird who used to tell the opposing team and players that he was going to get the ball on the last play!!

That's how clutch that man was. And as far as him being tired against the suns, the one thing that always impressed me about MJ was his ability to just will himself to another level no matter how tired or injured or sick he was. I've never seen that ability at that level in anyone else ever. All you could say is, he's Michael Jordan

Alot of people don't know this about Bill Russell and they never point it out when they talk about him winning all those titles. Well out of those 11 titles only 2 of those titles was he the leading player on that team. The Celtics wasn't Bill Russell's team like MJ to the Bulls or Kobe to the Lakers. A few of those games Bill Russell was 3rd or less on those teams during those title runs. One of those title runs he was #7 on that Celtics team. However he was super duper dominant with rebounding. Bill Russell just happen to be on that team every time they won and there was another player who never gets mentioned who won 10 of those 11 titles with Bill Russell but the last 4 or 5 titles Havlicek was the leader of the Celtics and was their main reason for winning those titles.

Jonny loves Kobe. He does his best to be unbiased in his vids. So regardless where he ranks Kobe it's an attempt at being objective. Eyetest is quite literally the most subjective and unreliable method. 2 different people can see the same thing and come away with completely different thoughts.
@jimmycharlotin7050Ай бұрын
@d.columbia9603 bro I saw kobe bryant played literally in his entire life it's the fear factor dude. I saw this guy hit clutch shots with draped all over him bro now analytics is not going to favor kobe but for me top 3 clutch player along larry and Michael it's about the mindset not analytics
@AX5TerminatorАй бұрын
@d.columbia9603 numbers can be misleading as it doesn't have any context where if you actually truely following and watching the games, your brain will process all that information and determine an answer that's not reduced to a number.

I love MJ and Kobe and almost all the others, but Larry 5th? The guy did it almost every game, hardly ever missed one (famous for the one he missed against the Fakers) and out of boredom told them about it before. "Hey Coop, they're gonna set a pick for me right here, and then I'll pop and stick it in your face!" In the Finals! Against the best defender in the league! Except for LeBron they all can do it, but Larry was the absolute best at it. For a decade the Celtics just needed to keep it close, Larry will get the W.
@strygwyr5735Ай бұрын
Where do you put Steve Nash in this conversation? I remember him always carrying the suns during clutch moments back in 04, 05. We know how selective he is in taking shots. But if the game is close at 4th man is just carrying the suns
@TheRealMindCrimeАй бұрын
Nash was definitely clutch on the offensive end but he was a detriment to us on the defensive end in clutch time so I can't have him on my top 10 but 20 probably. And he's one of my top 5 favorite players but I wanna be fair.

Maybe a hot take, but I don't think Dirk is all that clutch. And I'm saying this as someone who likes Dirk. Yes, he did play lights out in 2011 against LeBron (and D-Wade)'s Heat. But are we just going to forget that he was the guy who choked against the #8 seed Warriors? To this day that's still the biggest upset in playoff history by season record. He also blew a 2-0 lead against Wade's Heat in 2006. But I digress. It's not like Jonny has him in his Top 10, so I'm not gonna make too much of a big deal about it.
@azrielnguyen9586Ай бұрын
Big no way from me. 1) MJ 2) Bird 3) Kobe Mister Russell does not make my list. He's a career sub 18 point scorer. He's not even #1 option on his team when the clock is winding down. By overboard with the flowers, you're setting him up to be disrespected. This is not his game.

@TheRealMindCrime right but kobe has the most game winners in nba history 37 and the most unassisted made shots in nba history faced top 5 defensive team in all 7 finals. 9 game winners in one season. He has the most 20 point 4th quarters , and he has the most 30 point quarters in nba history. Also, competition matters. Kobe has faced some of the top10 on ball defenders ever, Bruce Bowen, Shane Battier, Ron Artest Tony Allen, Dwade, kidd
@rapgodreloaded9259Ай бұрын
KD has more failures in the playoffs than clutch moments. Steph Curry's more like Reggie Miller that makes big shots leading up to the clutch.

I'm old school... watching since the Dr. J era... but I don't see how you make a clutch list without Steph Curry on it. If you want a guy to take the shot with your life depending on it, how would you choose someone other than him? No player (other than Jordan) has ever attracted more defensive attention than Curry, and he's made some insanely clutch shots in his career. I'm not saying he's #1... but he's for sure in the top 10. Also... hard to agree with Magic being in the top 3. Top 10 I can understand, but 3? Nah!
@TheRealMindCrimeАй бұрын
Thats true. Its impossible to make a top 10 for this lol. There are too many greats. Steph has proved it time and time again that he is clutch

@@TheRealMindCrime Yea, I posted my top 10, but had to leave out Mr. Clutch, which didn't feel right. I also think Wade and McGrady both have a case to be made, at least as honorable mention. Clutch has to be the most romanticized and dumbest examples of nostalgic nonsense. Why would you gameplan for a last minute winning shot when you have, on average, between 95-106 possessions over 48 minutes that allow you to build a significant lead without any threat of losing? Clutch is just inefficient game management.
@TheRealMindCrimeАй бұрын
I don't get it. End of quarter/game plays are always something practiced in every level of basketball. Sometimes you're down by 1 and you have to make the hard to choice of who's getting the shot. Its rare that someone not only hits it once but does it over and over again. If clutch didn't matter then the bulls were gonna lose the 98 finals. Same with the olympics this summer if not for steph being clutch
@inthegutterstaringathestarsАй бұрын
@@TheRealMindCrime Where did I say that it is not important? However, does a last minute winner provide any extra points than a 2 or 3 pointer in the first 5 minutes of the game? It is nonsense because the gameplan is to win the game and what is the easiest way to win the game? Sensible game management. The most recent Celtics championship was a perfect example of this. If you have to rely on a last minute winner then it creates unnecessary drama. If the 98 Bulls or US olympic planned and executed better then they would not have been in the position that they required a clutch moment.
