Franklins expedition should definitely be #1 Due to the fact of what the men went through. They had been at the time, the most prepared expedition in history, with new technologies, the dive suit, steam powered ships, central heating, heat powered water filters, and the most important and unbelievable, canning. However what they didn't know and the small details of these things led them to the most terrifying expedition in human history. The dive suit would still have men freeze in the water (not to death, that was yet to come) the men would also become extremely stressed and afraid in the suit, as to lack of trust in the new technology, but even more so due to the vast emptiness of the frozen depths. The steam powered engine turned out to be essentially a 1 ton paperweight that would slow them down due to lack of starting fuel hence lack of use, it hardly moved the ship since it was not made for ships, but for trains. The central heating became inefficient when they had to experience what they couldn't explain, the frost and snow, it didn't melt after Winter, it stayed until it became even stronger during the Winter of the following year. The central water heaters caused the men to become sick and even drove some to insanity seeing wild and horrifying hallucinations and nightmares, all because the men had been suffering from lead poisoning, they had no idea that the new lead pipes and freshly distilled and hot water was perfect for the water to be poisoned from lead. The canned food also gave the men lead poisoning and was also usually rottin due to a cheap manufacturing company canning the jars that supplied their expedition. And this all happened before they abandoned the ships. Only to endure unimaginable horrors in the great white nothing. 162 men went on that expedition, every single one of them died. And none of them had a painless death.

HrTjernobyl The history of both is terribly tragic. Scott was ultimately remembered because of his courage in facing the end. Although they had pills to take to die, in case of horrible injury or starvation, they decided not to use them. Instead they comforted each other and wrote farewell letters to their loved ones. The ultimate success of the expedition that did return was completely overshadowed, which caused them great bitterness.

What about the Amazon Expedition of December of 1981 in Bolivia. The expedition became an episode on I Shouldn’t Be Alive called “Escape from the Amazon”. Yossi Ghinsberg (a former Israel soldier), Kevin Gale (an American photographer), Markus Stamm (a Swedish guy who got dumped you his girlfriend & hoped that a little adventure would take his mind off of that) & Karl Ruprechter (the leader) set out to find a native village, it was said that it would take them 3 days to get there. However, after nearly a week later tensions began to rise. Eventually, after things got really intense while rafting down a river the 4 men split into 2 groups. Karl had no intention of taking on the river again (because he wasn’t a swimmer) & Markus had to go with Karl because Kevin & Yossi didn’t want him to go with because he was getting tench foot & was complaining all the time. Sadly when Kevin & Yossi separated, that was the last time they saw Karl & Markus. Then, after Kevin & Yossi went back on the river, things went south fast, the raft broke, Kevin & Yossi were split from each other, Kevin accidentally left a machete behind that was helping him get through the jungle, began to develop trench foot, too. Luckily, Kevin found an army base in the Amazon & miraculously found Yossi still alive. Sadly, Karl & Markus were never found they’re still missing in that jungle to this day, & are pretty much dead by this point. The entire ordeal last 30 days. Oh, & you know what the worst part about this was? The village that Karl believed to be located, never existed. So, yeah.

I am related to one of the men who was on the Greeley expedition. His name was William Whistler. His brother was Clarence Whistler who was one of the first Roman Greco wrestlers. Anyway, Williams body was supposedly brought back to where he grew up and buried. A few days after he was buried it was exumed because there were rumors of cannibalism. My great grandfather was there when his body was exumed and he saw what was there and what was not there. There is a newspaper clipping that I believe was in one of the New York newspapers that mentions my great grandfather being at this event.

Regarding the frequent use of the word "decimate": to quote Inigo Montoya in "The Princess Bride," "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." The word you want is "devastate." "Decimate" means to destroy by one-tenth, from the ancient Roman punishment for misbehaving soldiers. Their leader would shout, "Decimate!" and they would *kill every tenth man."

+Ronald Brown Yes and no. Yes in that the Ernest Shackleton lead crew never did traverse the whole continent of Antarctica which was their objective.
