A countdown of the top 10 most effective and shocking adverts/commercials from the UK. The ads in this countdown are all fairly recent, so it does exclude ads produced over 10 years ago. Check out my "Top 50: Scariest Public Information Films" video for more terrifying British ads!
Nearly all of these ads are shocking, disturbing, distressing and emotional, so you have been warned that this compilation DOES CONTAIN MATURE/ADULT CONTENT AND SEXUAL CONTENT.
THE AUDIO IN ENTRY NUMBER 4 IS 'REMOVED' DUE TO COPYRIGHT - apologies for this!
Check out my COMMENTARY/REVIEW of this countdown here:

The long-running ad before it was actually more effective: The "Think, before you drink, before you drive" campaign. The one which features a vehicle driving towards some kids (from driver's perspective) then cuts to black instantly before there's a big smash and a scream (i.e. kids getting squished, but not allowed on TV). Simple stuff, back then!

You're missing the one that shows a bunch of kids on a field trip, then a car swerves in and hits them all. That one was put on after 9 due to it's nature.

@Owi Joh Northern Ireland is NOT part of Britain. It is however part of the UK. And the people within NI are British. That said, some commercials are aimed at Ireland and only transmitted to the island of Ireland and not to the island of Britain. Which would make the ad Irish or Northern Irish, but not British.

I think some of them may be only linked to a specific region, at a guess I'd say some were only shown further south, or (most likely of all) only ran for a short time due to the usual written or emailed complaints from the most sensitive

The ad was actually a metaphor for how the same amount of people die of choking than people who die of cancer. So it was showing how both of the things that happened were practically the same thing, as the scenario ended with the person dying.

Love how many people in the comments laugh at these ads and pick them apart... here in the UK, we're used to them and they work because they make us think and realise that we can fix these problems and all it takes is action. It seems like other countries I shan't mention only care enough to be offended after the fact, but not to actually do something to prevent the preventable tragedies in life. Do you people just flat-out ignore your Public Service Announcements? Does no-one's life matter to you but your own?

The Motor Neurone Disease at 3:57 did it for me. Such a horrible disease, and what people don't always realise is, that while your nerves system breaks down as well as your, muscles, and your body is collapsing over time, your brain still functions normally. Which means you can feel every bit of pain and anguish that you go through every second of every day. You want to talk, and your brain is telling you what to do, but you can't physically do it, the same with walking, swallowing, even breathing. It's so horrible :(

In a life threatening situation they teach you to shout for help and get the person who responded to your shout for help to call the ambulance so you can get on with trying to save a life it’s not always best to call for a ambulance straight away but it’s better to call as soon as possible because they could die right in front of you because you were busy telling the call handler your location rather than actually saving the persons life obviously if it’s something that can’t dealt with at the scene then call a ambulance

Say, whatever happened to that Darfurian genocide? Guess people just stopped caring about that as time went on, because Syria is the new vogue for a liberal progressive cosmopolitan's veneer of care... complete with bossy accusations that others don't do enough. People suffer in war. Children are among them. It sucks. It happens anyway. The world's a big place, mate. You want to take on every war orphan it has, don't be surprised if you hit complications. Europe's taking in refugees and immigrants like a desert takes heat, and their terrorist attacks have jumped horrendously as a result. Don't blame the U.S. just because it doesn't want to imitate the trend.

there was an advert which was about road safety and it was amazingly effective. They stopped it though because they thought younger viewers wouldn't like to see that. That annoyed me. People need to understand the real world and how if you get hit by a car you wont just be back on your knees again with this idea in your head about fairies and ponies. Children need to be aware of what can happen if you aren't safe when crossing the road.

My heart broke when she said "Elena wanted to help people, and be nurse" imagine how many trafficked people in real life once had that dream but they couldn't able to pursue it due to being chained in prostitution.

We saw this in a school assembly recently, out of all of my friends I was the only one to realize what happened before it happened. Eyes in the background.

Actually, these ads are very blatant. Obviously the background was important and told the narrative - hence the over-emphasis of background sounds throughout. So tell me: did you *ALSO" spot the deliberate sequencing of apparently unrelated soundbites to form phrases? For example: "Ready or not..." followed by "... Here it comes"? Of course, the *REAL* children's game goes "Ready or not, here I come...", and that in itself was deliberate. "Subliminal" stuff is actually very obvious if one is even slightly observant. That's why it doesn't work well.

Numbers 6, 3, and 2 hit a bit too close to home. Not because abuse and exploitation is something I have experienced but because such things leave such a strong impression on me. If there is one thing that is a punch in the gut for me, one thing that can actually raise me to anger and tears, it is the abuse and harm others... especially women and children.

I accidentally swallowed a nickel once, my vision was going black, it felt like my throat was swollen and closed. My parents told me this part: Your face was going white, your eyes looked dead, we drove you to the hospital and in the span of 62 minutes, they said you were fine. We went into the medical room, you were laying in the bed crying. ''Why are you crying dear? it's all over.'' I simply respond. ''I don't wanna leave.''
