Currently reading Perdido Street Station and it is mindblowingly creative. It dives into some really cool biology of strange organisms, almost like a scientific approach. And the writing/prose is just dripping with atmosphere. It's like nothing I've ever read.

I was worried at the beginning about the little book dragon because I couldn't see him on your shelf, but he just hid behind your head! Whew! It's just too cute. 😅

What a good video idea! The books you selected seemed perfect for it as well. I always think urban fantasy is interesting in all the different ways authors hide magic behind the world. From the Minister of Magic corresponding with the British PM via an old painting, to Door opening access to London Below, to London’s Case Progression Unit and a militarized unit of talking foxes, authors find ways to stitch magic into this world in wonderful, unique ways and I love that too.

This video was perfect for me. I find I really struggle with super predictable traditional fantasy so I'm always looking for something unique. You had a lot of my favourites on your list. I'm going to try Ninth Rain by the end of the year

Here are a few: American Gods by Neil Gaiman - a war between the old world gods who have taken root in the New World, and the new gods. Perdido Street Station by China Mieville - centers around a part bird-man who has been punished by taking away his ability to fly, and who enlists a scientist to help him regain flight. The Skinjacker Trilogy by Neal Shusterman - takes place in Everlost, a kind of Limbo where some kids go after they have died but don’t make it into the light. Centers on a war between the Sky Witch and the Chocolate Ogre. Completely unique world building. The Terre D’Ange books by Jacqueline Carey - a fantasy/alternate history, where Jesus had a son named Elua, who founded the prevailing religion based on the tenet “love as thou wilt.” The first series centers around Phedre, a woman who is the chosen one of Kushiel - the angel of sadism - because of how keenly masochistic she is.

You know, I had the exact same experience with The Ruin of Kings 2 years ago, but after seeing Angela's gushes I just couldn't resist giving it a second chance and now it is one of my all-time favourite series. Something just clicked for me the second time around and I ended up having such a blast!! And totally agree with what you said about Winnowing Flame, that series is unlike anything I've ever read and that feels so exciting! Great video :)))

Maybe not the most unique fantasy, but there a few that stand out in my mind that are far away from typical quest adventure fantasy. A Shadow in Summer by Daniel Abraham is a very character driven fantasy set in a unique world with a magic system somewhat reminiscent of Babel's. Piranesi by Susanna Clarke is also very unique and I think most have heard of that book by now. I'm currently reading The Book that Wouldn't Burn, a new release by Mark Lawrence, and in many ways it feels a lot like Piranesi but still it's own unique story about a mysterious library. Brandon Sanderson is very mainstream, but his novel ideas are very unique. If you think about it, Stormlight Archive is pretty different from most fantasy worlds with a very unique magic system.

Piranesi is wonderful. I will add that any list of "unique" fantasy books that doesn't include Titus Groan is incomplete.

I cant say i absolutely loved Ruin of Kings but I thought the lead character was entertaining enough that i bought but haven't read it yet. I think the most Unique fantasy book i read was Imagica by Clive Barker. They character finds out that earth is just one many realms and goes on a quest to explore what else is out there

The gimmicky narrative structure of Ruin of Kings was the massive downside for me. Book 2 worked WAY better for me. It still has a kind of gimmicky structure where we are reading an in-world book so the footnotes are someone's annotations and comments correcting things. Then the plot itself is the main character from book 1 meeting some people in a bar and they get trapped inside, and so the new characters tell their story of how they ended up having a dragon hunting them. But, unlike book 1, both POV's are telling the same story just from two perspectives so it was much more linear than book 1 as we aren't hopscotching through time, and then like book 1 we catch up to modern day and continue the narrative. I still really need to try The Bone Shard Daughter. I have owned it for quite a while now...yikes. YAAAASSSSS TRESSSSSSS

The first 2 unique stories that immediately come to my mind are One Piece and Senlin Ascends (aka the Books of Babel series). Oh! Also Made in Abyss is quite unique, imo 😊 Hehehe, I loved The Ruin of Kings (spec on audio, the footnotes would not have been fun if you didn't get to hear a sassy guy going "Um, actually, that is wrong"😆), but, to be fair, I love it when books seems to be absolutely chaotic and confusing and absurd, but in the end everything makes sense, and we just have to figure out where each piece of the puzzle fits 🤩 The second book in that series tho... All the horse jargon used _all the time_ to describe humans killed it for me 😓 Haven't really continued on since finishing book 2 😅
