That's the weird thing with smaller bikes here in the UK . Being so in demand due to our licensing laws, they hold their value and it's actually way cheaper to buy a used 600cc+ bike than buying a used 125cc that isn't total wrecked. Honestly you can pick up a decent mid 2000's VFR with matching luggage for the price of a shagged 125cc lol

Wow! I had never considered that aspect. Certainly not a pattern you see in the US, ha. Since they're noob bikes, you can get used ones here for a steal. (Well, comparatively. _All_ used bikes, like cars, are still pretty pricey now it seems! Maybe they'll come back down to normal again soon.)

The tdub is a great bike for exploring new areas when you just want to ride slow and chill out. The low seat, super low gearing, and fat tires make it pretty certain that you can put through the gnarliest terrain and not stall out or drop the bike. If I had to pick any of my bikes to explore a new, treacherous unmarked trail I always pick the tdub. I always know I will be able to get myself out of whatever sketchy situation I get myself into.

I love my Tdub! It's such a fantastic trail bike. Don't worry about tire sizes for 2 main reasons. 1: the bike is shit to ride on roads. It can do it but it's handling is terrible. You're not going to be going full lean in corners cause it's just not built for it. 2: for you masochist who will do it anyway, the rear tire is basically a curved 4 wheeler tire. The amount of sidewall traction is actually insane. I have ridden across a slope in the pouring rain on wet leaves and haven't lost traction

I bought an SG250 in 2020 to learn on/work on and I love it. I learned how to do a valve adjustment, change the oil, and adjust the chain. It gets great mileage, has plenty of power for just bopping around town, and it maxes out at about 65mph for me on a flat highway. I think it looks pretty cool and the seat is so low a kid could ride it, it's a great learner bike and the price is right. Like Yam said tho, gotta want to do your own work.

i own a yzf r125 myself since im only 17 in the UK, and honestly its got enough power to get around places efficiently, its loads of fun on a b-road and with an exhaust change it even sounds great. if you are sat there thinking that 125cc bikes are completely boring, you are dead wrong my friend. a 125cc bike is the most fun me, my dad and my cousin have ever had on the roads. especially since my exhaust is so loud we get onto a back road and we absolutely rip it open, deafening the locals.

Having had my full licence here in Australia for over 40 years I’m surprised how many small bikes today which look like would give you heaps of giggles. Love the bikes like the Grom and Trail. 2 bikes we don’t get here in Australia are the Suzuki Vanvan and the Yamaha TW they remind me so much of the old little trail bikes like the Bultacos, Ossas and little Yamahas I was riding in the 70s. Love your work thanks for sharing.

i bought a used Yamaha v star 250 for my first bike and loved it! it wasn't fast, it over heated on a long trip through the Arizona desert in the summer, and was down right dangerous on the highway in Phoenix where everyone is doing 80 - 90 mph no matter what the speed limit is. but it was comfortable and a great starter bike! I now have a Kawi er6n (a naked ninja 650 and the predecessor to the z650) but I still miss that simple, little v twin cruiser! Picked it up in 2020 with about 3500 miles on the clock for $2000

Took a MSF refresher class, a few years ago. (after having an M1 endorsement for 35 years....highly recomend doing that) Anyway...I rode a brand new Tdub, in class. Never rode one before. As soon as class was dismissed, I went to the Yamaha dealer, and bought one, just for shits n giggles. I have put 22k miles on it, and every time I ride it, it makes me smile. I ride KTM, 450 and 525, for off road and dual sport rides. And a Royal Star, in the street. If times get tough...the Tdub will be my apocalypse bike. It's super fun, in a goofy way, and bulletproof.

As a kid i was DYING for a dirt bike. For my 13th birthday in 2008 my parents bought a new TW200 for my dad to ride on the roads and for me to ride off road with my friends. The tw200 is such a great all rounder starter bike. Jack of all traits, master of none kinda thing. I'm turning 27 this year and still own it. I loan to any of friends who want to start riding. My tdub has almost 20k miles on it. Probs 1/3 of those are off road. Learned how to ride on the street and off road. Another unforeseen plus of owning a tbud is you learn how to wrench since its so simply. I find it easier to wrench on my bigger bikes I own now because of my tdub experience

Ya know I get why they limit new riders to 125cc in other countries. About a week into riding on my new R3 I was in a smallish parking lot gassing up (probably for the first time) and I was surrounded by cars and I got all nervous because I knew people were watching me and checking out my cool looking bike so in a state of nervous frenzy I ended up chopping the throttle and popping the clutch. I actually popped my first mini wheelie and took off like a bat out of hell all out of control and missed the front end of a car by what seemed like an inch at the time. Luckily I got everything under control before I shot out into traffic and ended up a statistic. I just remember the embarrassment and I gave everybody an I’m sorry wave and got the hell out of there before the laughter and pointing at the idiot ensued. It’s a good thing I was just on a R3 and it wasn’t on a big bike, especially an older one without traction control because I’m sure I would’ve looped it and caused somebody some real damage.

I think my Duke 200 keeps up or exceeds all of these in usability around the city. I can get up to 75 or 80+ (fastest speedlimit here is 65 on one stretch of highway) if needed, it taught me how to ride, and gets me around the city just fine, plus its cheap for when I inevitably upgrade after the first year. I think most people who get these were looking at grom's and z125s to begin with and found something more usable. While I'd like a 390 if money was no object (in regards to something I know I will replace fairly soon) I feel like I found a happy medium. Sure I can't blast down the highway for a long trip but I'm just fine riding it for short stretches to work or to run errands. Now that I have my bearings I think I'll transfer to a rs660 sometime soon and I can either keep this or trade it in because face it...we didn't get into motorcycling to ride a beginner bike forever.

The honda trail is classified as underbone, moped or kapchai depending where you are from. It's most popular in asia especially southeast Asia due to the affordable price and a massive aftermarket parts. Most "performance" underbone maxed out at 150cc and made about 15-17hp, most tuner use big bore and stroke kit to achieve as high as 50+hp and some up to 70hp.

I’ve ridden a lot of little bikes as I have been a moto coach a long long time. One of the things that makes me love the TW is it’s size compared to other small bikes. The TU250X is a good learning tool but for myself the bars are a bit narrow. TW is not a powerhouse but it has larger riding triangle and wider bars that offer more room to work.

Even the Honda Nighthawk is better for u-turns than those narrow TU's. I'm hoping the Duke 200 becomes the next MSF workhorse.

I started and still own a 125cc here in Ireland, it's unsafe for most road situations, and doesn't have the power to be 100% confident, I'm 17 and been riding for a year on the street as it's easier than a car lisense and cheaper. Next bike will either be a Benelli TRK 502X or HD sportster, not sure if I want a ADV or a cruiser just yet, rn I got a 125 sport bike...if I could call it that, it has the looks... nothing more lol

I still love my Ducati scrambler icon 803cc all the torque and power she has yes I can only top out at 130 at the moment but if I want more speed I’ll have her tuned and some after market goodies added but I’m not big on that speed I love her off road long even if I’m keeping her really held back without a skid plate

In 1983 Yamaha's YZ80 had 20 horses I know that the Yammie is a 2 smoker but that is at least 5 more horses than those GSXR FZR AND NINJA yet the sportbikes have almost 50cc more displacement and almost 40 years of technolgy advancements. Wow we have come so far

You forgot about the duke 125cc. I have 1 and I must say it's a good starter bike for here in the UK and the max hp for a 125 in the UK is 15hp and it is measured in kW power and your only allowed 11kw of power. I know I did my cbt on the 28th January 2022 here in South Wales UK. As I am 45 this year I am going to do my full A licence within the 2 years that a cbt lasts.

Some more indian bikes for you all to add to the list 😉 1. TVS Apache RTR 200 4v and RR310 (based on BMW G310R ) 2. Yamaha FZ25 (Air cooled single cylinder bike looks underpowered on paper but its peppy as hell due to its lightweight 154kg kerb weight) 3. Bajaj pulsar NS200 and RS200 (Engine derived from KTM Duke 200 ) 4. Suzuki Gixxer 250 twins (Reliabile and quick) 5. Hero Xpulse 200 4V (Affordable dual sport bike )and xpulse 200T ( Retro modern street bike) 6. KTM Duke 250 ( if 200 was too tame for you then 250 will do) 7. Bajaj pulsar F250 and N250 8. Yamaha R15 and MT15 (Gets VVA technology from its big brother R1) Note : most of these bikes are sold in Latin America, you can import them to the 🇺🇸 easily. Most of the bikes here are Air cooled except for ktm Dukes and Bajaj pulsar NS200 and RS200 they are liquid cooled. Bonus information: Also check out Mutt motorcycles, they make some really good 125cc and 250cc Retro modern bike with Suzuki's Air cooled reliable refined engines . They are British with a Japanese heart .
