Another one that comes to my mind right now is Ashton (played by Vincent d'onofrio) in 'The 13th Floor'. He is a virtual character from a simulated 1930's era Los Angeles that discovers that his life and world are a computer simulation. When he attempts to kill his programmer Douglas Hall (Craig Bierko), however, he sends his maker unintentionally onto a path that leads him to find out that even his own 2000's L.A. is a computer simulation. Apparently fate doesn't lack sense of irony.

AVA certainly had to be on this list but the first one that came to mind for me was Robocop, so I was surprised it wasn't close to #1, much less missing altogether. HAL was following orders given to him by Heywood Floyd, orders contrary to his programming by Dr. Chandra. This resulted in a catastrophic malfunction resulting in psychosis. What he did was a misguided attempt at ensuring mission success, and his survival, the most important part of the Discovery mission. I hate it when people talk about HAL being 'evil' with never having seen or read '2010.' Frankenstein's creation turned on Victor only after Victor's abusive treatment of him. Every version of Frankenstein is the same - the creature only ever attacked anyone after being provoked. He never harmed a child, he never hurt the old blind man, etc.
@lindavanzanten40768 жыл бұрын
+Robert Kilbourne HAL was never evil. I agree completely with that. HAL on his own was completely capable of completing the mission. and with the crew dead, the contradiction was eliminated.

I could make the case that Frankenstein *is* the name of the monster. The artificial man created in the lab wants only to continue living the life he never asked for, but the doctor is the one whose behavior and actions are truly monstrous. (Even more so in the sequel, where the nastiest living thing on display is the newcomer Dr Pretorius.)
