Donald O'Connor doesn't get half enough credit for that dance sequence - when you consider that he ended up in hospital for a few weeks after it, it really shows his talent and commitment

The problem with remaking Fiddler on the Roof is Topal played Tevia in a record breaking 14,000 performances he played the character for nearly forty years, he’s irreplaceable.

@Jim Polichak If only they had made a film of it with him in his prime in 1964. By 1971, I think he was already too old, overweight and unhealthy. No other Tevye ever sounds right to me. I don't much care for Topol at all, and I didn't like the film. John Williams re-orchestrated the lean original score and turned it into a bloated, sugary Hollywood confection.

Even if a current remake tried to keep the original film's period setting, "Singin' in the Rain" (1952) has an authenticity that comes from people who lived through the transition to sound working on the film and sharing their stories. For the people who made the film, the move from silent to talking pictures wasn't too distant a memory. That kind of thing could never be duplicated now.

That's one of the reasons i love the film so much. I've forgotten a lot of Hollywood lore so many of the references go right over my head now. It really is a love letter to the early years of the movie musical along with a healthy dose of parody, a bit of satire, and more than a little nostalgia. It is a much wittier film than a modern viewing audience lacking historical context can realize.

I think Donald OConnor stole the show out from all of them, musically, and Jean Hagen otherwise. As for Debbie Reynolds, she has never been a favorite of mine. Too over the top. Her only starring role I found compelling was in The Catered Affair.

The made for tv live production just doesn't have the same gusto that the OG has. Tim Curry brought a type of charisma to Frank-N-Furter that you cannot reproduce. Sweet Transvestite was performed on Glee and by Laverne Cox respectively, and neither did the OG justice. As a matter of fact the Rocky Horror Glee episode was terrible, especially including "Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch Me" into the episode, what the hell was Ryan Murphy thinking?! You just simply cannot recreate the perfection that is Rocky Horror.

Already a remake (Holiday Inn) and it borrows heavily from the success of the title song: Made big during WWII when GIs dreamed of getting home for Christmas, the 2nd half takes place in a hotel (kinda?) etc.

Thank you for including "Fiddler on the Roof" which is my favorite musical of all because in addition to some great songs that are very catchy, it's about a culture. I admit, I tear up every time for Tradition, To Life, the Bottle Dance and the whole wedding scene and I laugh when I hear If I Were a Rich Man. Thanks for 7 Brides because ya got the incredible Howard Keel and all of the dancers, especially the barn raising scene. Two notables that I love that would not work today because they were a product of their time and I loved them, "Camelot" and "Paint Your Wagon". With Camelot, it's just such pure fantasy with some of the best costumes which a lot was modeled after 1960's fashion. Not gonna lie, I still get chills when I hear "Where am I goin', I don't know. Where am I headin', I ain't certain. All I know is I am on my way, from Wagon, not to mention when Harve Presnell sings They Call the Wind Mariah. A quick note, the same costumer designer, John Truscott, designed for both of these films which shows his talent. They are as opposite as you can get. Have a lovely day!

Judy was top of the heap but sadly paid the price for her stardom. Garland sang with the best of them and always came out on top. Sinatra, Crosby, Martin, Darrin. Striesand, Minnelli, Bennet,- Peggy Lee, Ethel Merman etc. - and in even earlier days with the fabulous Deanna Durbin & show-stopping Al Jolson...& still she held her own...That's how great she was...!!!

I think I would’ve put The Music Man up here, but YES Singin’ in the Rain, Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof, Sound of Music-love them all. There’s just something authentic about those age of musicals that musicals nowadays are just kind of missing. This classics will never get old. I’ve actually only seen the stage adaptation of An American in Paris with Robbie Fairchild and Leanne Cope, and I loved that one, but I want to watch the Gene Kelly version!

"Gigi" and "seven brides for seven brothers"....you had to choose two songs taken completely out of context?! Gigi...young girl who learns to grow up and fall in love with her best friend who's several years older than her. And the song you chose to show is an old man singing about how thankful he is for the innocence of young girls before society gets ahold of them and makes them snobs. (Especially in the context of the movie) Seven brides...a lady marries a man who has 6 other brothers. She changes these men to see that women aren't things to grab and make babies with. They learn to respect and love the women they like. (and honestly what woman wouldn't want a rugged man over the snoody mamas boys in the town.) The song you chose is where the older brother convinces the others to go into town and kidnap all the girls they like. When they get them home the older brothers wife kicks all the men out, including her husband, and forces them all to see the error of their ways. Definitely do NOT remake these beautiful classics!!

@@alizahalon it's take place in a time when courtesans were a proper lifestyle. She is groomed by her family to be one but once she finds out what it is she decides she doesn't want that life. At the same time the ML realizes he doesn't want that life any more and comes to actually love her. They both find that love is more important than being the height of society and living with all the "graces" of the time. Is it perfect? No...but they both come to see what's more important and both come out as winners in the end.

Gene Kelly is the man. He's in at least two. I will always be my favorite. And there any real triple threats in Hollywood that can REALLY sing, act, and dance, besides Hugh Jackman? I'm talking full on dance and not just good movers, ie La La Land(shivers). Edited: Ariana DeBose is a true triple threat. I started watching her on SYTYCD and then to Broadway (Hamilton/The Bullet), and Westside Story (Anita). Like days of old when they trained to do all three.

Totally, while "West Side Story" had a Brilliant remake, some other musicals hold up well as they are, especially "The Sound of Music." Nothing could possibly eclipse the 1965 classic.

The King and I musical film should be added to this list because of its wonderful story about a teacher, Anna Leonowens, who traveled to Siam to be a British governess to the King's children. It's a classic musical.

I never missed seeing a musical - but never saw a better dance routine, than the barn dance in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. The choreography was absolutely brilliant, as were the dancers. However, I recently saw the opening scene of La La Land and was so impressed. How they were able to do that amazing scene and get everyone to finish in unison at the end, was really quite amazing. So, I have to say that these were my favorites of all the hundreds of routines I've seen on film.

Compared to American in Paris,the ballet it's hard to see 7 Brides. Barn dance was better. 2 completely different styles. But 7 Brides had men dancing in a masculine style that was groundbreakingly different. As did Oklahoma's " Up to date in Kansas City".. My 2 favorite female dancers are Cyd Charisse and Ann Miller . And nobody is as influential as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire.!!

Take a look at Stormy Weather, the "race" film from the 1940s. It's filled with the best Black music of its' time, Lena Horne's singing and The Nicholas Brothers performing what most people -- including Fred Astaire -- consider the greatest dance sequence in movie history.

I will always defend Seven brides forever. The whole point of the Movie is that the men never had a female in their life so when one does come she teaches them how to respect them, and how to be gentlemen. Which is something I think my generation should see, just because it has women being kidnapped isn’t problematic, it would be if it was played as not serious. But they are berated and tossed out by the Female Protagonist and they have to earn the women’s forgiveness. People can be too sensitive sometimes, which can make them miss the bigger picture

I actually love that "A Star is Born" has been made 4 times, with each movie being a perfect time capsule of its generation. Clearly your favorite is the Judy Garland version, which was a remake itself. Just because your favorite is Judy's doesn't mean they should not have made the 2 that followed or that the original with Janet Gaynor shouldn't have been made at all. I look forward to the next remake 10-20 years from now.

I think adding “A Star Is Born” to this list was a weird one. Every version of “A Star Is Born” is different and sort of encapsulates the decade in which it came out. Not to mention that there HAVE been remakes, so…it doesn’t really belong on this list, does it, Watchmojo?

Most definitely, Porgy and Bess based on George Gershwin's 1935 play. The movie cast includes Sidney Poitier, Dorthy Dandridge, Sammy Davis Jr., Diahann Carroll, Pearl Bailey and directed by Otto Perminger. Also, Carmen Jones based on Bizet's Carmen starring Dorthy Dandridge, Harry Belafonte, Diahann Carroll, Pearl Bailey produced and directed by Otto Preminger deserved to be mentioned.

NEVER remake the Cabaret movie! Primarily because NO ONE can come close to the amazing Joel Grey's performance. Rocky Horror Picture Show should NEVER had been remade, and yet, it was done as a live action show a few years ago. Nothing against Miss Lorraine Cox as Dr Frank N. Furter, Tim Curry, having been in the original live play, then in the movie, MADE his character the iconic role that it is. I wish Hollywood would STOP screwing with perfection.

I will never forget the interview where Tim Curry tried to get into a sold-out viewing and was denied entrance because they refused to believe that he was Frank N Furter. He said he snuck in the back entrance in order to see it. SO FUNNY!

I agree that Rocky Horror should never have a movie re-make, but it could at least be released for the community stage, not just the professional. The closest I got was playing the narrator as introduction for a couple of the songs during a concert. @@avaughn828 Exactly! There are many musicals that have, as you mentioned, “ICONIC casting”, so, as a viewer, others just don’t do it for you. I can’t picture another Sinatra, Brando, Ann Margret, Gene Kelly, Astaire, Bing, etc. And yet, there are some musicals that will change things around. I wasn’t sure about West Side Story at first. I did the “oh noooo” eye roll, but after watching it twice, the new one made sense, so much more than the original. And, I forgot to add, Rocky Horror Picture Show. NO ONE will ever compare to Tim Curry. They tried with Laverne Cox, and I liked her in the remake, but to me, it was another movie, not as campy as the original, yadda yadda yadda.

@@J.P.Robles The Wizard of Oz got a Sequel back in 1985 called Return to Oz, which felt more like a reverse sequel. Judy Garland's Dorothy was a teenager in the first film, and Fairuza Balk's Dorothy was a little kid. That to me didn't make any sense. However if Hollywood decides to do another Wizard of Oz, they should call it The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which is more faithful to the original books, and Dorothy having the Silver Slippers instead of the Red Slippers. One other thing I forgot to add, there was an animated Sequel to the Wizard of Oz in the 60s, and Liza Minnelli voiced Dorothy.

Into the Woods with more dark side this story, of course Cats, Man of La Mancha (one of the favourite soundtrack but movie is bad), Camelot (?), Dear Evan Hansen - I saw this twice and it's full package od bad decisions and maybe new version of The jazz Singer (original used black face). New Jesus Christ superstar because it again and again have new stage versions. I think Cabaret with new/modern version like London version from this year maybe it's good idea too. Ironically, when it was made, Hollywood columnists berated "The Wizard of Oz" for not reusing the script and songs from the then-still fondly remembered 1902 stage version, and suggested Fred Stone reprise his role as the Scarecrow. Stone was 62 at the time, and was no longer in any shape for such a physical role. "The Wizard of Oz" had also been made as a silent movie two or three times, and a cartoon a few years earlier, but the 1939 version made everyone forget even the book it was based on.

The movie "Oklahoma" always STUNS me - when you consider the line "where the Wind comes racing.." and then remember that the show was written less than a decade after Oklahoma turned into the Dust Bowl... There are so many layers to that Musical that we lose because we are so far removed from it. ALSO Oklahoma was "Indian Territory" with NOT A SINGLE Native American... Problematic doesn't BEGIN to describe it!

@@michaelodonnell824 Broadway not long ago did a re-imagining of "Oklahoma" where Ado Anne (the "girl who can't say no") was played by an actress in a wheelchair, and one of the romantic couples was played by 2 performers who were openly transgender. (Some wits dubbed the show "Woke-lahoma", but that wasn't even the real problem.) I saw a local production of this by the same director, which skipped the stunt casting but had some scenes performed in total darkness, others with stark green overhead lighting for no apparent reason. Worst of all, the whole cast was onstage throughout, including scenes with only a couple of active characters. The dormant actors, instead of getting the hell offstage, sat motionless in lunchroom chairs, by rows of lunchroom tables, staring into space like robots that were de-activated until needed. Spoiler alert, at the end the "good guy" groom murders his rival in cold blood, and the cast sings "Oklahoma" as the bride stands aghast, her whole dress and face spattered with blood. It was non-sensical, and hideous. I "get" the temptation to "modernize" a play from 1952, but this was the worst. And by the way --STILL no Native Americans.

With every improvement that Spielberg made to West Side Story (making New York City a main character first & foremost) I still wish he would have left it alone. As much as I enjoyed the re-imagining of Jerome Robbins' choreography (changes that must have been a legal headache), and the stellar vocal performances, it still lost something in the translation. I will continue to recommend the original. As a result I agree with your entire list. Just because we can refresh classics doesn't always mean we should. Spielberg did it for his dad, so I'll cut him some slack. One of your better videos ladies.

Considering the wealth of entertainment Mr Spielberg has given us over his career, I'd say we allow him this far more personal project. There WAS a reason why it was made, but not everything is about you or me. Jerome Robbins choreograhy remains the only steps you will see in stage productions (of which I've seen dozens of variants over the decades). I agree that I would have prefered it not being re-made, but at least it was remade by an acomplished film maker with real love for the source material.

Alan Cumming in Cabaret would be worth seeing. And that particular production had some interesting twists that made it worth seeing, as well. Full disclosure: In the late 1990s I had house seats and saw him on Broadway in his Tony Award winning performance as the Emcee. In this particular production, when Act II started he walked into the audience and announced "it is the dreaded audience participation time" to nervous chuckles all around. I thought "I hope he doesn't pick me, I hope he doesn't pick me." Guess what, he picked me! My Broadway debut. We danced cheek to cheek for a moment while he cracked some jokes and returned me safely to my seat. But I promise you that doesn't affect my opinion here at all! He was a revelation in the role. Sadly, Natasha Richardson is no longer with us to reprise her role as Sally Bowles.

I hope I never ever see a remake of 'Hello Dolly' from 1969. No one could ever top the stellar cast in that movie musical; Barbra Streisand, Walter Matthau, Michael Crawford, Danny Lockin, Tommy Tune, Fritz Feld, Marianne McAndrew, E. J. Peaker and Louis Armstrong (whose recording of the title tune had become a number-one hit). The film won three Academy Awards for Best Art Direction, Best Score of a Musical Picture and Best Sound and was nominated for a further four Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Perhaps by then Hip Hop will have evolved entirely, perhaps they’ll be a new craze and it’ll be based on a music that belongs entirely to the future. W/Moulin Rouge, you forgot it also creates one of the greatest Ice Dance Programs of all time. I still say the Olympics was very lucky that Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir were the final skaters in both the Team & Ice Dance Free Skates, because every time they skated, I would’ve been prepared to swear the ice they’d just performed on was melting. 😁. Just thought I’d mention that. 😊

I agree with all the choices listed here (well, perhaps I have my doubts about “A Star is Born”), although not necessarily with the order in which they are listed, but since you DO have an "Honourable Mentions" section, I believe you could have included any of the following: “Evita”; “Godspell”; “Guys and Dolls”; “Hello, Dolly!”; “Jesus Christ Superstar”; “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”; “Kiss Me, Kate”; “Little Shop of Horrors” (the musical version, of course); “Man of La Mancha”; “My Fair Lady”; “Oklahoma”; “Porgy and Bess “; “Show Boat”; “South Pacific”; “The King and I”; “The Music Man”; “The Phantom of the Opera”; “The Tales of Hoffman”; and “Victor/Victoria”. Some of them HAVE been remade, but none of those versions are as good as the classic ones. Still, all in all, a very decent list.

Interesting that you mention Porgy & Bess. From what I understand the Sam Goldwynn estate will not release the rights to this movie so I wonder if they control the rights to a remake???

@@infonut Interesting question. I have never seen the movie, only extracts thereof. Problem is that I don't know (or can't remember) whether some of them were scenes from the film or from some stage version of the opera itself. Don't think, though, that Goldwyn's estate could prevent a remake: their rights to the story passed away a LONG time ago. They may control the distribution of the 1959 film, but certainly not of the opera, which is still being produced regularly on stage.

I would've expanded this list to a Top 20 list - in order to fit in a couple of top Astaire/Rogers musicals like Swingtime & Top Hat - as well as more Gene Kelly like On the Town, Cyd Charisse with Astaire in The Bandwagon and a couple of Rita Hayworth musicals like You Were Never Lovelier, Cover Girl, Pal Joey, You'll Never Get Rich. Kiss Me Kate had some great dance numbers with Ann Miller. White Christmas from the 50s should never be remade either.

Actually there is & it's the 2nd remake .. the original was in 1960, fallowed by the 1986 version.... There's one in the works with Scarlett Johansson.

@@86forever Oh yes, I forgot about the 60s film. However, the 1960 film wasn't a musical so I guess that you could count the 1986 film, as the first movie musical film for Little Shop of Horrors.

I am now feeling like singing in the rain. I love that movie!! And although 7 brides for 7 brother's is a bit problematic for obvious reasons 😂😂😂😂 I do love that one, too!! I mean, they try to take then back because of... TRUE LOVE!!😍😍😍😍😂😂😂😂 Love it!!
