The thing about Wolf Walkers is that when the characters are “wild” or in the forest, the animation has the construction lines underneath and you can see the raw frames pretty much, and it’s very smooth. When they’re in Kilkenny, the animation style is very blocky, chunky and the character designs are a lot more one dimensional and basic. The fact that some designs were rigid and some weren’t was very intentional!

The “inconsistent” animation of the towns folk and town itself in wolf walkers was purposeful, to show the main characters disconnect from the towns way of life. She doesn’t feel at home there, hence the the town and it’s inhabitants have more simplistic designs in contrast to the beautifully animated forest and its wildlife.
@sandradelgadoleon18684 жыл бұрын
Also the lack of literal perspective on the city setting is purposeful, making everything look artificial and like a trap, like Robyn mentions she feels when she’s there. Everything was incredibly designed to fit the narrative and the contrast between the two settings

The reason for Wolfwalker's inconsistent animation is because Cartoon Saloon had two separate art styles in mind for the film. The forest is loose and free with more rough sketches, while the town and its inhabitants are more blocky and geometric, symbolizing how orderly and strict they are. You can also see Robyn subtly shift from one style to another depending on her situation.

I personally wouldn’t call the animation in wolf walkers to be inconsistent. The townspeople are always super geometric with clean precise lines whereas the wolves and Mebh have rough sketch marks. Robyn gets more and more of this art style as the movie progresses, but characters like the protector guy are always rigid and stiff. I think it’s a really cool visual motif that separates the two groups

Eyyyy, Wolfwalkers!!! I always get excited seeing Irish stuff online :) as for what you said about its style sometimes being weird, when I watched it it reminded me a lot of old Irish and English artwork, between the Celtic swirling wolf animation and the tapestry style of the castle. I actually thought it worked to accentuate the differences between the two clashing countries!

I can actually explain the way Wolfwalkers looks! (Because I literally wrote a paper on the artistic direction of Cartoon Saloon) It's an intended stylistic choice based on traditional English and Irish art, specifically using English woodblock printing for the town and insular Celtic art for the backgrounds. They're intentionally flat and lack a focal point because that's the style they're trying to emulate. If you look at traditional examples of insular art, you'll see a huge focus on shape and pattern, and a complete lack of depth in the composition of the images. It's a really interesting style that Cartoon Saloon uses to give it's films a really unique visual style.
@jimllc4 жыл бұрын
The wide shot you used with the weird angle as a probable example of "shots not knowing what the focal point is" is a pretty common Cartoon Saloon trope to establish an entire room or setting that a scene is taking place in. Or also just to showcase the scale of a town/city.

I think there’s potential in a Borat anime where he goes to Japan and meets several anime characters. Like imagine if he met Class 1-A from My Hero Academia or Class 3-E from Assassination Classroom. Imagine if he tried a VRMMO with Kirito and got banned. There’s a lot of potential interactions he could have. Also Cartoon Saloon did Skunk Fu!

Hey Schaff, I know someone has already mentioned it to you probably, but I'll go for it anyway. The reason that some of the scenes in Wolfwalkers look so weird compared to other scenes is that the animators I assume were trying to give you contrasts between the two primary locations within the movie, the woods, and the town. The town is meant to be sort of medieval in a way, not only to its ideals throughout but through the art/animation as well. Many of the scenes within the town are composed without vanishing points, the biggest one I noticed that I didn't figure out at first was the town. But there are other examples, the lord's chambers that you showed, even Robyn's house has some very awkward geometry (the table for example). But no, it's exactly how they wanted it to look, crude and boxy. This contrasts with the woods, where everything feels new, colorful, and flowy (adore the first Wolf scene with Robyn). I would highly recommend watching it again if you haven't already because I did not pick up on it as well on the first run through. But damn, what a great movie. Definitely deserved its spot on the list.

Wolfwalkers ftw and that's that. Oh and the contrasting art styles in Wolfwalkers is to illustrate the restrictive and repressive nature of the puritan Brits coming in and cutting down the wild Irish woods around Kilkenny in which the wolves live. It's intentionally blocky and reminiscent of wood cut imagery in the town and the woods are much freer and looser and organic, to symbolise the wildness of nature. There are a number of great interviews with Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart which mention this. The story is also rooted in a specific time period in Anglo Irish history and when looked at through this particular lens, the animation styles make a lot of sense, from an Irish perspective anyways.

I personally really liked “Unpregnant” and “Words on bathroom walls” I believe they’re both from 2020 and they’re pretty good. Unpregnant is also about teen pregnancy and friendship and Words on bathroom walls is about a boy with schizophrenia which was really refreshing to see being handled at all, although I’m not sure it’s entirely realistic it was still fun to watch.

Ayo there! Biggest Wolfwalkers fan here! 1. The character designs was like this on purpose. Its actually a whole topic on how they used geometry and designs to fit the story. Its very fascinating if you look into this but, long story short, pretty much everything connected to the town has rectangular shape - people designs, objects, even such stuff as fire at the end and the whole town that is shaped like a square. This is made to represent how their citizen cant stand for anything out of the ordinary and ready to destroy anything that can damage their own plans. In contrast, everything from forest has more of a circular design, often not having straight angles. That is Meb’s hair, leaves of the trees, other animals and wolf gang itself that often moves in the shape of a tear. (This is not my theory, this is very confirmed info) 2. The protagonist has 2 sets of similar conflicts even at the start (1 set with her father and 1 with citizen of town). This makes stakes fly so high closer to the part than things cant keep peaceful anymore. For me, it was legit one of the most intense and dramatic experience I’ve seen in the movies, let alone animated ones. 3. This is the most surprising one and probably no use to you guys. Just wanna share this info. And it is that I understand why you dont rank it as high and its because, weirdly, english version sucks SO much. I am russian and I originally watched it in russian and afterwards rewatched in english. And this is the weirdest thing I have seen but actors are acting like 400% better. They add so much drama and charisma to the characters. The father sounds like he actually cares about Robyn. Robyn is rememberable by something outside of accent. Also, this really disturbed me but why is the phrases in english so quiet compared to music? Idk man. But, as a man that has fallen into depression 3 times over past 2 years just over this one movie, if you know russian, I would really recommend watching it in russian. Idk about other languages tho sorry but cant help here…
