A surprisingly good anime is the (1990) first season of Chibi Maruko-chan (that spanned 142 episodes until 1992). The series depicts the simple, everyday life of Momoko Sakura, a 9-year-old girl everyone calls Maruko, and her family in suburban Japan in the year 1974. The show is funny and charming and steadily fan-subbed by MaruChanSubs. Series 2 (1995-present) is unwatchable with poor animation and the most cringe dub you ever heard on KZbin, but the first series is great and well worth a watch.

In my personal opinion i think Welcome to the NHK is a masterpiece. Steins Gate is great too; Another favorite of mine. I just love anime(s) that just suck you in from the start.
