This started to be a list of mistakes others make when they are starting up with Photo Printing At Home.
But as I went into it further, I realized that I have made many more mistakes than these folks.
SO.... here are my top 15 ( plus one ) mistakes I have committed in my time as a home photo printer since year 2000!

Another good tip (having had issues raised by one of my customers) You do not need a rainbow selection of multiple papers when you are starting out. Start with a few packs of the manufacturers own papers until you know what you are doing (we all do a variety of finishes). Then, and only then begin experimenting, you can often get sample packs, and swatches from the manufacturer (both Awagami, and Hahnemuhle have been quite good to me in that respect for their new papers for alternative processes). Pick perhaps 2 or three, then get proficient with them - different images/styles lend themselves to different papers - e.g. Fotospeed's Platinum Baryta lends itself well to black and white images, Permajet's ultrapearl paper is great for general use, and proofing (can also be alkward for people to scan).

I just want to say, thanks for all your information about printing. I just bought canon pro-100s and Epson Ecotank 7750 (will send back the one which causes the most problems). Thought that the ecotank would be better choice because of the cheap dye but seeing you talking about refilling the cli-42s opened my eyes a bit . Especially since the epson is giving me odd problems such as totally weird saturation, colours and dye not staying on the paper (I'm getting proper Epson paper soon.) First two prints were fine with Epson but then some problems occured, Canon is working as expected (I was using canon's pro platinum which came with the canon's printer). The only shame thing is that I live in Eu so I cannot get the precisioncolours ink, so I think I have to use the octoink's ink Still thanks for making and sharing your information about printing. Keep up with the good work.

Nah. The pro-10 is one excellent printer. Just use it as it is meant to be used. Every few days and it will reward you with lots of excellent prints. There are money saving options to consider as well so you can still produce top quality prints at the lowest cost possible. Check out my PRO-10 playlist and specifically the test results of the signature edition inks from precisioncolors.

Hello Jose, I love to watch your vlogs about the printers! My question is; I'm considering to by a Canon Pro 100s (in Holland $500 no rebate) or a Canon IP8750. They are both Dye printers. The 8750 has 1 color less. I wil print once a month a A3+ and now and then a A4 photo. What is your advice. Or maybe a other brand Epson 15000 or 960 or P400 or ........ Love to hear from you. Thank you!
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 6 жыл бұрын
Either printer is good,The PRO-100 is over all better. Once a month will not work so well as you really need to print something before every 60 hours pass to avoid huge cleaning cycles that the printer will initiate if you go without printing after 60-120-240-480 hours. Each larger than the previous one. Put your inks on paper rather than the ink waste pads.

Well you would either buy profiling equipment and produce your own or... Have a profiling service do that for you. You have to print special files using zero color management on your printer and paper then ship the prints to the profiler for scanning and creating the profile. I do that for only in the USA.

You would need specially inkjet coated aluminum and a printer that allowed a straight feed path from the front. Printers such as the old 3800 and 3880 from Epson have often been modified for similar work. Other ha. That I have no idea how accomplish this type of printing.. There might be some video demonstrating is type of printing a d you may be able to see the printer. The problem is those printers have been extensively modified and can not just be purchased ready to use.

Jose, newbie here, but you say to use ink on paper and not waste it on the machine doing a routine cleaning cycle as I understand it. What if your print doesn't use all the colors? I assume the machine will push all eight (Canon Pro 100) cartridge nozzles. I'm starting to realize what I have gotten myself into. Yikes!
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 5 жыл бұрын
All colors even when printing BW images will use all colors. Not as much as when printing in color but your very limited available colors are used by compositing and can produce over 16 million colors and hues in all densities. So print and print some more so you actually produce prints. Maintenance cycles will occur regardless of what we do. That ink produces nothing tangible. It simply maintains your print head clean.

I would pick something along the lines of a Epson P600 or Canon PRO-100. Both capable of 13x19" prints. Both easy to use out of the box. But regardless, you need to first learn the basics of a color managed workflow depending on what your editing app is. You are on a Mac and that alone can be a problem when it comes to managing color as the mac driver tries to do it all for you. Sometimes not exactly what you will need. I know very little about Mac printer drivers. They just do not match the user interface of what I am currently using windows 10. There are videos on KZbin for Mac users that will be helpful!

Yep those two wireless printers were on the top of my list. Is it true the Epson does a better job with matte finish, because I prefer matte vs glossy?
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 7 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. The PRO-100 can indeed produce very good results even on matte media. I have a video on that subject and show actual results. But remember it is a dye printer, so ere is no such thing as dye matte black. The P600 being pigment based contains both PK and MK but has to do the black ink switch.

@cheo1949
@cheo1949 6 жыл бұрын
That sounds like something mechanical that canon should address. Platinum is extremely glossy and smooth and depending on the conditions of your rollers that may be a cause. Try a Roller Cleaning utility on the maintenance tab and then try again.
@767Marcello
@767Marcello 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for the quick response Jose. I did the roller cleaning before I wrote you, and maybe because the printer has been off for a few months, after trying over 20 times, finally the paper was coming through.I guess the smooth paper could be the cause, although the profile IS within the specs. What about the off centered prints. Its driving me crazy. Could it be conflicting instructions the managers from driver vs. app? How can I fix it ?
@767Marcello

Downloaded ICC profiles and Canon Pro Print... apparently all is fixed !! The canon Platinum still won't go through, but I printed on Epson Metallic Glossy, which seems smoother, with outstanding results.

I'm confused regarding colour management... in my version of lightroom/photoshop you either let the application manage the colour or the printer, i don't see how you can end up with both conflicting with each other? and besides there doesn't seem to be a obvious option available to turn off the printer colour management independently?... @@cheo1949 Thank you for the reply, you must be very busy!... i'm on windows actually but can't find an obvious way to check that the driver isn't interfering with the apps colour management except to say my results are really quite amazing when printing either way!... still it would be nice to know where to look, just for peace of mind.
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 4 жыл бұрын
Sure you can. On a Canon printer you would have to go to the printer preferences and then on the main tab page click on color / intensity manual adjustment then the matching Tab and then choose none or choose ICM. It depends whether you want to have the printer control color or not interfere at all. When you choose none then you allow the application to control color. On an Epson printer it would be a similar but easier way. There you just basically disable color management either on or off but never both the driver and the editing application.

Why I see dots on my prints? specially on skin areas? and Epson SureLab D700 (Lab Printer) - res: 1440x720dpi, Droplet Size:2.5 pl, Ink Set: 6 colors. will it print better than a home photo printer like "Epson Expression Photo XP-8500" - res: 5760x1440 dpi, Droplet Size:1.5 pl, Ink Set: 6 colors. Jose, I am using the Pro 100 , and I have ordered my precision profile inks and am ready to start my reloading, but I while reviewing one of your prior vidoes from 6/2/2016 on how to reset and refill cartridges, you said that after you refill, you could or should ? use the precision color profiles when printing. But , does that mean that I will not use the profile I have downloaded such as the Red River profile for say their gloss paper? Does precision color have profiles for all manufacturers papers?. I am sure I am confused and misunderstanding, but I know you can clear this up for me.Thanks in advanceLove your videos.
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 7 жыл бұрын
It will take you about 2-3 refills to assure that you are now printing with 100% PC inks. Prior to that you will still have a mix of the two inks sets in the sponge. EXCEPT FOR YELLOW! Once you have filled about three times then you can use the D50 profiles for the papers listed. Don't forget to turn off Color Matching to NONE in the PRO-100 driver as I show in the videos. If you are on a MAC and you tell your Editing APP to control color it will automatically turn that off in the driver. At least I think that's how it works on a MAC. If on Windows, you have to turn it to none manually.
@paulbeerman6736
@paulbeerman6736 7 жыл бұрын
I see, so use precision color profiles D50 for the papers they have profiles for, and I assume for the ones not listed, use the ICC profiles I downloaded from their paper site. I ask, because per your suggestion on prior video, I have bought a number of different sample paper packs to try that are not listed on the precision profile list. Thanks for the response. I will be spending a few hours over the next few days, refilling my carts as you outline in your videos.
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 7 жыл бұрын
D50 is your standard, notice that there are other profiles that have been adjusted to compensate for different illuminant's color temperatures. So use the D50 once you are printing with 100% PC inks. For papers that are not listed, you really can not expect to get perfect results using the manufacturer's profiles as those were created using OEM inks. Regardless of any claims, NO third party ink set can match OEM 100% if they did they would be guilty of patent infraction. So for any"OTHER" papers you would need a custom profile to get a good match for that paper.
@paulbeerman6736
@paulbeerman6736 7 жыл бұрын
go toI see, but for papers without a Precision Color profile, where would go to download a custom profile? Or, perhaps, just use the company's profiles in that case, and have one less thing to be concerned about until/and if my 'eye' can differentiate colors and resolution differences resulting from using precision color ink rather than OEM inks?
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 7 жыл бұрын
You have to make it yourself which means you will need a tool like the X-Rite Colormunki Photo. Using PC inks has nothing to do with the apparent resolution of your prints. But rather the color matching and that can only be achieved through the use of the correct ICC profile. So as long as you are using the papers for which PC provides free profiles for ( and custom made profiles can cost you from $25 to $100 from private Profile producers ) are made you can be assured to have a good match and result. But remember that nothing is or will ever be perfect.
