Okay, already seeing "envy" and "jealous" in the comments.. check this out. If i WANTED to be like them.. than i would have just stayed there WITH THEM, working my life away like a SLAVE like many are.. the fact I moved to ALABAMA... means i have NO DESIRE to be rich.. or be around "fancy" things.. I just wanna shoot my gun, hear the crickets not the engines. Obviously, I am retiring early from the rat race.. with the money we used to buy our home, fix it and other things we did.. we could have lived in a gate community for many years before we would have to think about making another dollar. MANY of these "rich" people are just in DEBT to there eye balls and end up divorced when the money dries up... I WANT NO PART in that mess.. they can keep it.

But, all in all, I left Florida because I no longer liked it. To me, Florida is over-crowded. Real estate has become over-priced. Cost of living has become over priced. There are so many generic channels by realtors where you can go and hear relentlessly upbeat and positive talk about FL. The cons they list are always the same : The humidity! The bugs! The traffic! Always general stuff that tells you very little about what it’s actually like to live there day to day. At least when it comes to Florida, it seems your class is not half empty, it has a hole in it. I'm a Hispanic guy that grew up under very difficult conditions in Harlem, NY. Today, I am one of the most successful people in my immediate family. It's not where you come from but what decisions you make later in life when you become an adult. You can complain, fret about people that are doing better, blame the system, or stop making excuses and move yourself forward. Not all successful people are exploiters of people that destroy the environment. BTW: I lived in Puerto Rico for many years and have seen the natural beauty of the island protected by some (of all income levels) and destroyed and abused by others (of all income levels). I do agree with you that many places are getting over built. There are many complex factors that lead to that.

@@last7509 well, I’ve seen many such stories. I’m not just the exception. Those that fail to learn from their mistakes, strive to make better decisions, improve themselves and grow, and fall for the excuses always say this. You remind me of an article about a retired couple from Boston that sold their house and moved to Florida to enjoy their dream retirement. Their dream was not their reality because the husband wanted to play golf during prime hours when the golf course required the use of a cart due to the high number of other retired northerners who also wanted to play during the same peak times. He whined he couldn't take time and walk to get his exercise. The litany of their whines about "too hot" and "too crowded" etc. etc. went on and on. The last and most laughable whine was that they wanted to just sell out and move back. They had sold their house in Boston for $400,000 when they retired. The house they bought for $200,000 when they moved to Florida was now worth $236,000, but then they discovered that the house they had sold in Boston was now back on the market and the seller was asking $650,000. Back in 2009, I was in Florida for some time taking care of my father, who was in rehab following his second stroke. I was in Ocala, which I enjoyed very much -- it's a really beautiful area of Florida. Still, I noticed that Florida was severely economically segregated. The working class. poor people and most POC are relegated to interior areas of Florida, either north (Lake City over to Tallahassee), or farther south (central part of the state south of Lakeland). If you're over on the coasts, traffic congestion is simply un-doable, pretty much 24/7. Something which wasn't discussed were the cold snaps in winter. Because Florida is a peninsula, the humidity is extremely high year-round. If the temperature drops into the 30s or the 20s (which will happen), that cold will chill you to the bone. I have been more comfortable in Indiana when it was 0 degrees than I was in Ocala when it was 30. Florida drivers are some of the rudest I've ever experienced. Now, I'm going to preface by saying I'm from Texas, now living in Indiana, and I'm used to people in Austin, D/FW or San Antonio driving a Lexus at 80 to 85 mph and flipping people off. Florids drivers are unpredictable, but I've noticed a tendency for Florida drivers to drive 15 mph below the speed limit in the left (passing) lane, or cutting people off, or driving two feet from the rear bumper of my car on freeways. It's bad enough that they do this in Florida, but there are few things I dread more in Indy than seeing a Florida license plate on IH-65 or IH-70. It would be nice if Florida drivers would either not drive at all in winter weather up here, or learn how to drive in winter weather -- but I'm not holding my breath waiting for this to happen. I'll visit Ocala. I'll visit Tampa/St. Pete. I'll visit Tallahassee. You couldn't pay me enough to live in Florida.

Lived in Clearwater/St Pete for 20 yrs, moved there from Atlanta still in my 20s. Exciting, fun, adventurous- I thought- for several years. Finally got tired of the 4 seasons of summer, literally cooling off to 90 at 2am. EVERYTHING you say is totally true- came to understand this after a few years. Now living in mid-Tennessee for last 16 yrs and just love the 4 sesasons with mild winters- you don't like the weather, just wait 3 months it will change. In FL it took all day to just to get out of the state to go somewhere else. Here, I can be all over in a few hrs: Atlanta, St Louis, Indianapolis, Cincinatti, Chicago, Louisville, etc etc. People are plesant and friendly. It's just a nice and normal living. I could write essays on the differences. Thank you for the informative video- people who want to move to FL need to consider all the negatives.

I never understand why no one mentions rats. They are a big problem here. When I first moved to Florida, the apartment I rented was infested. The locals were like, oh yeah, that happens. I was ready to leave immediately. I know it’s swampy and low lying, but I wasn’t ready for that reality. Stores always have the bait boxes along their sides and back. It’s gross. I’ve never seen anything like it. And mold. Every place I have lived so far has had a problem with mold. A little mold ok, but no, it’s invasive. And predatory landlords. My gosh. It’s awful. I haven’t totally broken up with Florida but I’m getting there. I don’t see how people don’t recognize sea level rise + porous limestone+ population explosion+overdevelop is just disastrous.

Florida has ALWAYS been the Retirement State for the eastern part of the USA. For most of the 20th century, Florida was a cheap place to live for Seniors on Soc. Sec. I'm 75 but even back in the early/mid 1950's the older members of our NY church were retiring down to "St. Pete" and such. My sister-in-law, moved to Florida right out of college, and even in her 40's and 50's still couldn't adjust "all the old people who take too long to cross the road". Being surprised that Florida has a huge elderly population, is like being surprised that a lot of gamblers live in Las Vegas :-)

Last time I visited Florida we were in Orlando, and on the day we were leaving I drove us back to the airport and I damn near had a panic attack with these morons and maniacs driving around me, cutting each other off. And heaven help you if you’re in Orlando during 5 o’clock evening traffic.....ugh; It’s a damn mess. I was raised in Boynton Beach, FL and lived in FL for 32 years. I must agree with you about most everything you're saying in this video. When I graduated from University, I left Florida as fast as I could. What you have there are nothing but the 5 REs: REtail REsidential REtirement RElaxation REcreation As a result, there are these things that I couldn't stand: People - rude, inconsiderate, no sense of urgency, too old, phony, fly-by-nights running from something Culture - there is none. Because everybody is from somewhere else, very few people know that much about the history of the area. There are no good "difference makers" from that area or, what ones there ever were, left. Economy - There is no industry in Florida which is why you can't find a decent paying job. You can't find good quality labor which is why the service is so poor. You're either a have, who has it all or a have-not, who barely stays afloat in squalor. The state relies on people bringing money from somewhere else and spending it there; the state economy is a false economy. Outside of some agriculture (sugar, oranges, etc.), the state doesn't produce anything for consumption by other regions. Weather - Too humid. Noone ever talks about this because the temperature is always the first thing people think about (go figure, it's all snowbirds and northern transplants). On a summer day, you'll sweat profusely by the time you get in to the supermarket your car. It's miserable Cost-of-Living - Waaay too expensive. In Boynton Beach, they don't want rental properties; everything is about the wealthy who come from somewhere else. Local ordinances are set up to cater to them. I'm sure it's like that in a lot of cities there. The "Gold Coast" has gotten increasingly liberal over the years and it shows all over the place. Quality of Life - The traffic, the lousy people, the poor service and a big police presence everywhere you go as well as nothing (for younger people) to do all adds up. If you want to do anything, you'll have to spend a LOT of money on something that, if you're young, you might not enjoy that much anyway. Bottom line. Visit Florida (in the winter time) BEFORE you decide to move there. Take note of what you see and don't see.

Great analysis of South Florida. Many people I know relocated to Central & North Florida, which are very unappealing compared to South Florida for a variety of reasons. The asshats that relocate to Florida from up north were LOSERS from where they came, so they take their inferiority complex out on the natives. F**k South Florida, I am in the process of relocating to Nevada. It's not perfect here, but people here are far more pleasant.

We are starting to look for states to retire in and thought since we already owned a lot we would start there but considering everything we have heard from the locals I think this will just help us to decide what to do about this property as well as a vacation. In my experience SW Florida is one of the best places on Earth to live. This video demonstrates that you can't please all the people all the time... Florida may not be right for everyone, but moving to SW Florida 25 years ago from the Northeast was the best decision I've ever made in my life. I started a business, my wife purchased an existing business, and we've been very successful and beyond happy living here. Most people are very friendly. My 'clients' have become my friends. My neighbors are nice and we love where we live. Take everything in the video with a grain of salt. This one opinion is not a widespread reality. The vast majority of it WILL NOT apply to you. If you want to enjoy life and succeed, Florida is a great place to work hard and enjoy the 'fruits' of you own labor. And, under current circumstances, Florida is the MOST open state in the country! Virtually ZERO restrictions. We have a Great Governor...!

For shits & giggles I checked it against how much it would have been in my home state. $15. Want to register an out of state car? It will cost you a small fortune. Oh yes, we don’t have yearly inspections for cars. Just don’t get in an accident against one of those folks. Professional licensure and certification has no reciprocity in FL which means you basically have to retake your schooling. Then the wages for these jobs are horrid. Teachers salaries are either 45th or 49th in the country. Our governor has turned into a dictator in these past 2 years. I’m one who does her homework before making a move and I found your video to be very informative. My sister lives in south Florida and my parents are moving there to be close to her and her husband. I’m being recruited to move there soon to be closer to them. Not rich, despise traffic, and don’t love heat or humidity but I’m considering the move because I love my family and don’t want to be far from my elderly parents. Although I’m not happy with where I’m at, living in one of the top 5 most expensive states in the US, you’ve given me a lot to think about. Didn’t know there were so many cons for living in Florida. Nailed it, lost my high paying job due to Coronavirus and unable to come close to pay. I was transferred from NYC and lucked out, lived very well in Southwest Ranches a very ritzy area between Miami and Ft Lauderdale. Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) lived 1/2 mile down the road. Loved the 4 years there, purchased a lovely 4 bedroom home with an inground pool and gated community about 10 miles from the ocean. This guy is 100% correct, the cost of living is insane. Comparable to NYC, real estate is beyond affordable and comparable jobs are paying me half of what I was making. Beautiful place, great neighborhood, good schools, heavy Latino population, but pay and cost of living don’t match. You need to have your own business or be well off to live here. Moved 2 months after being laid off because of Covid, in 2 months landed 1 job paying me less than half of what I was making. Moved to Pennsylvania and had 6 offers in 1 week with less of a drop in pay. Don’t get me wrong the beaches, party life, views, and fast pace is great but the cost of living is insane. Most people only last 2-4 years in Florida and head back home, especially the younger people who move to Miami Beach and see reality. The moving company rep told me that for all the New Yorkers moving in double Floridians are moving out -NC and SC.

As a native Floridan who liked growing up in Miami many years ago, it has changed for many of the reasons you listed. I am planning on leaving as well. Naples is not a valid example, it has been the city with the richest per capita city in the country. Not a city for the average person. If you live in Miami, Dade area you better be Latinos because "whites" have been driven out. You must be bi-lingual. To get your Alabama vibe you have to live in the interior or north interior Florida. I agree with terrible land use development. Around Ft. Myers they built over wet lands so when it rains heavy they flood. Humidity, bugs, and all the rest is true. The people had to pass an amendment this November to raise minimum wage to $15 hour by 2024. Wages are terrible for average people. GREED should be the state motto for the rest. Florida has been exploit by land developers to Disney. It was a nice place once to live even with the other shortcoming but no more.

Jarvis, I live in Northern Indiana. Median priced homes are $150K to $200K. We moved back here two and a half years ago from the Tampa Bay area.. At this time, the economy is great in the RV Industry and they can't find and keep help . The pay keeps up with the cost of living. The big part of the economy is that a gallon of milk here cost 1.89. In Tampa Bay, we paid 3.89 for that same gallon. Eggs are 1.69 here for a dozen... in Tampa Bay? 3.69. Car insurance in Tampa Bay? 400.00 plus a month. Where we live now? $139.00 a month. Taxes here just went up to $1,200.00 a year here for us with a small farm and six acres. In Tampa Bay they were $5000.00 a year for a $2500 square foot home on a postage stamp lot. And the list goes on and on.

We are also leaving Florida, not just for the price of the housing but for the price of home insurance. Many, many insurance companies have pulled out of the state because of the hurricanes. They do not want to insure houses older than 20 years. A couple we know bought a 19 years old home and got home insurance for $1900 a year. A house we were buying was 25 years old and the cheapest home insurance we could get a quote on was $5200 a year, so we rescinded the offer. There is a crisis of home insurance here and it will only continue to get worse as more companies pull out.
