Or in 2009 I think it was when Andy schleck was in the lead and he was in front together with Contador and on a descend Andy’s chain sprung off and so he had to stop but Contador went on to win the stage and take over the yellow jersey!

Respect the yellow jersey is a ridiculous rule (unwritten or not). Bad luck can fall on anyone. I'm not slowing down for anyone. The leader of the race is (theoretically) the one most capable of catching back up so why should I feel obligated to make it easier for him?
@jcl22759 жыл бұрын
halffulltome Euh.. yeh? I think this rule applies to every GC contender. You just don't do it.
@ViaticalTree9 жыл бұрын
***** I am pretty friendly, thanks! But I don't know what that has to do with doing your best during competition and fair play. I've always been taught to do my best in whatever I do. Why should I reduce my effort for the benefit of my competition? And how is it fair to extend this "courtesy" to one competitor and no one else, when the same bad luck can fall on ANY rider? Sorry, but this unwritten rule just doesn't make any sense to me.
@ViaticalTree9 жыл бұрын
Jean-Christophe Lagace You mean when ANY rider has a flat or mechanical or something you're supposed to slow down to let him catch back up? "You just don't do it." You don't do what? I was confused by that part.
@woodyeckerslyke9 жыл бұрын
halffulltome I think the point is to win by being a better rider not by having better luck. This is honourable. It doesn't apply to all riders because only a handful have any real chance of winning the race. It's not that different from football/soccer teams kicking the ball out of play when an opposition player is injured.
@ViaticalTree9 жыл бұрын
***** Sorry, this still doesn't make sense to me. You haven't explained how it's fair to extend this "courtesy" to one rider over all the others. Why does it matter that it's the race leader? I've never heard of anything like this in any other sport. It's a time based competition, right? I'm going for the best time. Why should I get a worse time than I'm capable of because someone else had some bad luck that was totally unrelated to me? Sure, that person will feel bad, frustrated. Guess what! That's part of competitive sports! I play tennis, if I break a string and I lose a point because of it, my opponent is not going to give me the point because poor little me had some bad luck. How about F1 or NASCAR racing. What happens when the race leader wrecks or has a flat? Does the rest of the field slow down while he gets his car worked on and then let him reassume his lead? Of course not. Your argument is that you're supposed to put feelings (mental health) over fair play. That's not part of any other competitive sport I know of.

Number 4 is not a rule that's enforced. I think 2016 or 17 had a stage that over 100 riders should have been knocked out, but they let it slide. A rule that should be forced. No break away or pushing the peleton whilst GC contenders are going for a slash (Ok, Sanchez).

The rule about "Respect the Yellow Jersey" really needs to be rethunk. REALLY people, it's a race, the idea is to win and beat the competition. I get the gentlemanly thing to do, but winning the stage and of course the whole tour is the goal. If misfortune hits the Yellow wearer, well, sorry, that's racing. When any race, car, bicycle, plane, marathon, TRIATHLON, you name it, nobody says "ahh, sorry, let me wait for you."

I wonder how long rule 8 (respect the yellow jersey) will continue to be an unwritten rule. When the past generation of yellow jerseys have consistently used it to abuse the peloton or gain personal advantage...I'm of the opinion that the rule should die. It should be about gentlemanly respect for the other teams and the fairness of the race. It shouldn't be a 'get out of jail free' card for the race leader when he gets unlucky. Perhaps the compromise should be, "Respect the GC leaders"?
@dakilangwaiter9 жыл бұрын
What exactly is the rule for when riders are taking a piss? Or for when the yellow jersey takes a piss?

You ride out infront of the peloton, signal that you need to answer natures call, sprint ahead and do what you need to do. If you're in the GC one or two of your team mates might stop to wait for you. And if you're in yellow then the whole peloton slows down.
