The reason dead space isn't scary for a lot of people is because you always have a gun in front of you to protect you, in my case, I played dead space 1 and 2 for the first time when I was 10, didn't scare me that much. It felt like doom but with some horror.

Silent hill 2 is one of my personal favorites of all time. It would be brilliant if they would remake the game from the ground up with the original team silent at the helm. Konami should sell the rights for silent hill to kojima. We already saw what kojima-san can do with 1 L shaped hallway.

You get used to weird monsters. The thing is Clarke is not unequipped to deal with the situations. It's different in a game like Thief: The Dark Project where the player is not armed to the teeth.

You get used to anything, adapting is one of the strengths of living creatures. Besides, having a way to defend yourself makes things scary in a different way, resource management weights on your mind every time you take a hit or shoots something, and even when you get the hang of it it's still scary when you mess up and stuff spirals out of control.

The very first clip in this video, that moment when you come across the first zombie in the OG Resident Evil. I'll *never* forget that moment. I'd rented a playstation and RE for the weekend. All I knew about the game was that it was a "survival horror" a genre I'd never heard of. I hadn't even imagined that a zombie game *could exist.* I was equal parts delighted and horrified. I don't think I'll ever be *that* caught off guard by a game again. It's a different world now. We're all a bit more jaded. I mean, I can still get scared. I can't even finish RE7 vr, but I'll never be that caught off guard by a game again the way I was on the original Resident Evil.

Then you haven't played DayZ much I guess. Never had as much adrenalin-pumping nervous breakdown moments similar to the ones in DayZ. Monsters aren't scary, however everchanging unknown situations with another players in a MASSIVE open world with changing daycycles (lasting many hours), need for resourcemanagement and collecting and a permadeath looming over where you can effectivly loose days of accumulated gear and the unpredictability of when or how or IF an engegement will ever happen is seriously straining on the psyche.

Masked Guy There are still graphical issues and audio issues (along with graphical and audio changes) in both versions of the game. If you know the the originals well enough, you'll notice these issues and changes a lot more easily. Issues that the originals never had. Not to mention the new voices... It's certainly better post-patch, but still nowhere near the originals. Maybe you got lucky with your copy?

I played Dead Space when I was like 15, and it was definitely scary, but only for so long. The scares and atmosphere got repetitive, and as you get more powerful, you don't really feel as vulnerable anymore. Everything becomes familiar, and you get comfortable with it.

David Well... dude to programming/data contraints at the time, I'm sure they decided to not have voice acting in order to have more game content. Back then they had limited space to work with on the Playstation discs, and there was SO much game content. Especially when you count all 100 floors of the Sears Tower. That was a whole lot of game at the time. They probably couldn't have accomplished that had they added in voice files.

P.T is the scariest piece of media I've ever experienced, including movies. The sound engineering in the game is what evoked that awful sense of tension and fear. If only it had come to fruition..and in VR as I think it was heading for.

Doom III was way more scary than some of the games on this list. Spawning enemies behind you in areas you thought you'd cleared combined with incredible sound design. And Slender Man is probably the most terrifying gaming experience ever made.

Man, when my friend was playing Resident Evil back in the day, it was a nightmare for me just to go back to my home at night. I remember jumping on my bike and going as fast as I can just to avoid getting attack by zombies (that was in my imagination, but man that game gave me chills). Silent Hill, same thing. Nowadays, Dying Light at night is pretty fun and scary, but strangely, the game that gave me the most anxiety is Subnautica with their Leviathan. His Growling ... man !

Fatal Frame is a horror game that was actually too scary for me when I first saw it and I couldn't keep watching it. I was just creeped out by the ghosts and I just hate being jump-scared.

The setting is definitely a huge plus for Dead Space but it does lose its edge about halfway through as it gets more repetitive. Revisiting the Ishimura in Dead Space 2 is scarier than anything in the first one imo but I do love both of those games.

The Dead Space series is honestly scarier. I'm a fan of Alien Isolation too though, especially because the environment is remarkably faithful to the movie. I wish the gameplay had been a bit less repetitive in AI, but what are you going to do.

These are all great, especially the Silent Hill series, but I think Condemned criminal origins should be included. That game had some serious scares.

I've played quite a few horror games but Kholat is the most unpleasant in terms of giving me constant chills. Not that I don't know where I am on the map, but also those dark apparitions are lurking everywhere.
