Let's put it this way, while in Task Force K-Bar (SOF task force with 8 different nations in 2001-2002 in Afghanistan), Commander of TF K-Bar Rear Admiral Robert Harward (US Navy SEAL captain) openly said that JTF2 was his first choice for direct action missions. That means he chose JTF2 over US Navy SEALs, German KSK, New Zealand SAS, Australian SASR, Norwegian MJK/HJK and Danish Jaegers for any mission he needed a strike team for.

I've heard that the Israel's special force: Yamam beated SAS and is now 1st and SAS 2nd. And yes, GIGN should be at the top 5... What I think about SWAT is that they should be at top 15.

A couple things about this list. Any of these well respected groups will tell you that there are typically other special counterterrorism personnel on the ground in a target location long before the SEALs or SAS show up, but those personnel aren't SEALs or SAS. Infiltrators, brokers, and provocateurs, as well as hard target squads. These people are often on site having done the mission prep, and perform missions right along with the special forces units.

1- That was from the first missions. 2- It was a HR mission, not a CT. 3- The unit was shutdown after this missions then restored later. 4- Their later mission were perfectly done, but you won't find their later mission on Wiki. You'll find it only on a few pages in Arabic.

as for the shayetet 13 operations there was the green island raid, they succeeded in their mission, but to begin with they thought they were discovered and opened fire, this led to most of them being killed but they still achieved what was needed but it was a costly mistake.

The 75th Army Rangers are one of the premier US light infantry regiments however they are not considered special forces. They provide support for the JSOC (Joint Special Operations Command) when one of their operations go awry in the form of a QRF (Quick Reaction Force). One of the main reasons people consider the SAS as number 1, is because most other special forces units such as SFOD-D and the French GIGN

clean record of NSG:- December 1999: Terrorists hijacked Indian Airlines flight IC814 from Nepal, and landed in Amritsar, Punjab. Within minutes of landing, the Crisis Management Group (CMG), which authorised the use of the NSG, was informed. But the CMG wasted precious hours and by the time the go-ahead was issued, it is too late. On the other hand, the NSG team on alert was elsewhere and no other team was raised during the delay. The plane landed in Afghanistan where one hostage was killed.

Agree. But units like the ones you have mentioned have other capabilities too.NSG engages in missions like in bomb disposal and VIP protection(SRG).GIGN is trained in performing HALO, assault of ships etc.Yamam can perform operations like raids in civilian areas. And GSG-9 or Grenzchutzgruppe 9 itself means Border security unit...like the Indian BSF.There is no force which can perform CT and nothing else.

or it could be that i look at those special forces because ive always been interested in the UK's SF and that interest has led me to also look at Europe, America and Israel as they work together, train together etc. my mind isn't closed its focused on what i want to learn about. also its not just the UK and France. Poland, Germany are also well known for having good SF.

Don't know who is n°1 as such things don't really exist, but regarding history, experience and number of missions accomplished, GIGN should at least be in the top 3. For instance it has seen way more action than the EKO Cobra, or the GSG9 that the GIGN trained (i guess that if the more experienced unit usually from the less experienced, not the other way around) . They are OFFICIALY the reference for intervention in planes, and form every other units on the planet concerning that precise type of intervention. While not being dedicated to usual special forces task (they don't perform sabotage or elimination of targets unlike SAS or its sister, 1 RPIMA) they are certainly the more experienced team when it come to counter terrorism, hostage rescue, and among the best close quarter unit.

be the most effective way of crippling the enemy, they used this when they were founded back in 1941 by David Stirling, small man groups could easily infiltrate the German lines and decimate aircraft, ammunition etc. They proved to be so useful they racked up a reputation throughout the war, but due to secrecy nobody knew they existed until around the time of the Iranian Embassy siege and the famous Bravo Two Zero. At the height of Communism Vietnam war, the British SAS alone fought secret wars

and it might not be compulsory but its unlikely you'll get in without going through them first, of-course they can make exceptions but its very rare you'll get in any other way, and most don't. its also because royal marines and paras are held to a higher esteem so would get more of a look in and have closer ties to the SAS and SBS. so it may not be compulsory but you probably wont get in any other way.

I think you are referring to the battle of Mirbat in 1972 during the Dhofar Rebellion - it is part of SAS lore. a BATT (British Army Training Team) of 9 SAS personnel and a small number of Omani soldires in a nearby fort (who did not fight) took on 200 - 300 communist "Adoo" fighters. Two of the most famous SAS men were the mighty Fijians Labalaba and Sekonia who at various stages in the battle were blasting single-handed with a 25 pounder artillery piece at the enemy at point blank range.

and the operation they failed was when they infiltrated Beirut harbor and had to retreat and another time when they failed was in the six day war where 6 were taken prisoner. apparently some other operations during the six day were also ended in failure due to them not being well enough trained to deal with what was asked of them.

CT-HR skills can be totally different from other skills. I know its impossible, but i try to be as accurate as possible from whatever i get from available sources.. Delta has couple of failures too, so does SBS. Didn know about Op Redwings, thanks. and its not compulsory to be in a Paras or Marines, but generally people who make it to the British SFs are from that background cause there Para/Marine trainin gives them an edge during selections.

Sorry but this is something you should have known. The FIRST special forces were the Italian frogmen the COMSUBIN (aka Decima MAS) they were the model for all special forces from WWII onwards. Who do you think in WWII sunk HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Valiant in Alexandria Harbor ? And who also sunk two Austrian battleships in WWI ? They trained the US Seals at their inception. Assisted in starting equipping and training Israel's Shayetet 13. Among other equip made first bubble free rebreathers.

Alpha isn't responsible neither for gas attack in Nord-Ost in 2002, nor in rash deployment in Beslan in 2004. Those were the "big people's" mistakes, Alfa did their job well. I think it deserves at least 3rd place in rating.

The Only other MASS Hostage Taking situation was 26/11 Mumbai. It was different kind of Mass hostage taking as from Moscow theatre offcourse and both should not be compared with each other, but still this one had a different set of challenges. 3 Locations were taken over by 10 Terrorists simulatenously. The terrorists were well armed with Ak-47s and Grenades and some of the best training. Over the entire Operation(Op Black Tornedo) in 50 hours, 800 out of bout 900 hostages were saved.
