Michael Jackson can literally be credited for what the half time shows have become today. He literally saved them from being cancelled because nobody used to watch that shit 🤣. My favorite is Prince btw, when it started raining I cried. Janet incident wasn't planned it nearly destroyed her career.

For Prince's show, the weather during the game had been rainy, and this inclement weather continued into Prince's performance, which took place during a downpour. This was the first occasion in which it rained during a Super Bowl halftime show. There was potential hazard due to the material the stage was made of, as it gets slippery when wet, and, adding to the risk, Prince and his dancers were wearing high-heeled shoes. Further hazard was that electric guitars were used. Prince asked if he could et electrocuted and was told possibly. His response? "Cool." Prince is said to have reveled in weather, with some involved in the show since reporting that Prince asked if the show-runners could "make it rain harder".

That story reminds me of the famous performance of "Glycerine" by Bush on MTV Spring Break in 1996. It was lightning and driving rain, and the band refused. But Gavin insisted on going out. He had to sign a waiver to not hold MTV responsible for death or injury. Iconic performances, both of them.

After the 2004 Wardrobe Malfunction debacle, the Super Bowl played it super safe and went with a string of old dude rockers: Paul McCartney, The Stones, Prince, Tom Petty, Springsteen, and The Who, in that order. It wasn't until 2011 when they went back to more modern music with the Black Eyed Peas. It's been pretty much all pop & hip hop since then. I'm actually surprised this list went with some of those old dude shows, since while I do really like most of those bands, I didn't think they (except Prince) were particularly entertaining for what the halftime show is supposed to be.

Prince and Bruce stuck out to me out of that group. Out of the last decade's more pop focused ones, there's been some great ones but also some disasters. Justin Timberlake's is considered by many to basically be the end of his career as a popstar, Maroon 5's was genuinely awful. But Madonna, Beyonce, and Bruno Mars were all great, while Coldplay and Katy Perry both were pretty solid too. This year's show would belong in the Top 10 in my opinion.
@dsfddsgh
@dsfddsgh Жыл бұрын
The modern music acts are just awful and except for the spectacle they all rely on their music is terrible and most can't play live. While the Super Bowl might not be the best for live performances Prince showed that if you are truly talented and not terrible like Katy Perry you can make it all about the music and not need the spectacle. To bad the Super Bowl was about 25 years behind the times when it came to the halftime show imagine if they had the modern music acts of the time in the late 60's or 70's doing the halftime show. In their prime Stones and the Who and Springsteen and McCartney not the old versions of themselves.

Janet was a mega star. Her and her family are legacies. Why would she need to resort to low budget gimmicks by exposing herself to millions of people?! There was a wardrobe change and apparently it wasn't double checked before the wardrobe malfunction. Justin Timberlake made a wise crack to the cameras when they rushed him to ask what happened. His comment was immature and made it seem like it was part of the show. He nervously laughed and said "Well, we like to keep you entertained " paraphrasing... instead of just saying a wardrobe accident happened and left it like that. She was mortified and the second it happened and they killed the lights, she rushed off the stage balling her eyes out and took off from the whole damn stadium. Male chauvinistic owner of the superbowl and a bunch of right wing conservative politicians did everything they could to destroy her career and have her black balled. He apologized years later for his part of damaging her career. But the damage was done. The owner basically wanted Janet to kiss his ass to see if she could get off the blacklist. When she didn't beg like he wanted but apologized to the public, Justin did...his career kept going and then he was invited back to the superbowl years later. It struck a cord with her fandom. The sexist behavior of her taking all the blame, hostility and backlash that halted her career was unfair, yet he was invited back and kept thriving. Janet has released a 4 part documentary of her career and talked about the incident. Trust me....that was not the type of attention she was looking for. As I said before, she was already a megastar like her brother. She was already on top of the pyramid. What's even more douchy of Justin is that when he wrote a song with Timberland and Nelly Furtado that was a dis track against Pop icon Prince, he had the audacity to perform a tribute to him after his death, when Justin got invited back to the superbowl. It was him trying to salvage his career, because social media pretty much cancelled him. The black community that helped his career get to stardom closed the doors on him. His writers and producers that helped make his career what it became, suddenly dried up and stopped calling. His career has not regained the popularity it once had. He spent his solo career imitating the black culture american style of music. Having features well known black artists, choreographers, producers that gave him his look and sound on a golden platter....when the well ran dry, suddenly he was doing down home country boy, lumber jack style albums. Supposedly going back to his southern roots.

I've been around for all but the 1st 2 Super Bowls. Football being my favorite sport, I've watched it every year and have yet to see a halftime show. I use the time to stretch my legs, use the john, grab some food and a cold beer.

The artists don’t get paid a large sum of month for the super bowl. They get union scale (the minimum). Their reward is exposure.

I like U2. Bono seems like a tool but I like U2's music. I actually think Katy Perry's Super Bowl should have been on the list. It was such a crazy spectacle and because of the Left Shark meme, also memorable beyond the performance itself.

@@theshadowfax239 He's come off as both pretentious and hypocritical in the past. Gotten involved in political issues but doesn't do anything to help, just beats his chest and tells people what to do and think. He seems arrogant and full of ego. Now, these are impressions and mostly built on events of past years, so I freely admit I could be judging him wrongly. But I don't just go around hating on celebs or something, that's not my style. So for him to have made this impression on me is actually fairly unique. I still appreciate his musical talent. I'm not as informed on what he has or hasn't done for charity as I should be, but I have the impression he talks more than he acts.

Just my opinion, but Katy Perry's absolutely deserves to be in the top 10. Decent cameos from Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott, and the set production, to me, was one of the best. She came out on a giant mechanical Lion, danced around with an uncoordinated "Left Shark" which was a fun meme, and had a lot of good energy. The exact opposite of the Maroon 5 performance.

i can't wrap my head around why you don't like U2. songs like PRIDE (IN THE NAME OF LOVE), SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY, ONE, NEW YEARS DAY, MYSTERIOUS WAYS, I WILL FOLLOW - these are just my favs off the top of my head. their true power is in their live performances - watch their LIVE FROM RED ROCKS concert videos. if it doesn't change your opinion i think it'll at least give you insight as to why so many love them.

Ive seen prince live and he sounds even better live. Best concert I’ve been to. The Janet Jackson thing I remember because that was the first time ever my team (Panthers) made it to the Super Bowl. I just remember turning to my gf at the time going “did her boobs just fall out ?”. We also has a streaker before the beginning of the second half 5 min later. My panthers didn’t win the Super Bowl but that was an eventful one

Beyoncé should have been higher, when you watch superbowl performances back to back hers is just superior. It’s insane the way she dances and sings live at the same time. And the songs are insanely hard to sing too. And then the stage design, transitions, pyro show and everything else. Her energy and charisma in this performance is off the charts. Michael Jackson was a better performer than Bey in general maybe, but her superbowl was by far better than his.

I've only seen the ones that I've watched personally so I never went back and watched Michael Jackson's or any the 90s and before ones. The most recent one was pretty good too.
