What is a Supporting Character in the Office? Here's my criteria:
- Not in the main cast of the show (I'd consider characters like Stanley, Creed, and Meredith in the main cast of the show)
- If the role was large, it had to only be for a brief run
- Had to be in two or more episodes.

I love Patrice but he couldn't help but shoot himself in the foot when it came to his work ethic. Dude just couldn't let anyone control him in any way. I remember an old O&A episode where Patrice discusses why he's so difficult. He felt bad about it, "no one gives a shit when you're 26th on the call sheet" was one of his most self aware moments I heard from Patrice when it came to the Hollywood thing. Same thing happened with Arrested Development, they wanted to use the character but he was such a dick to the cast and production where they essentially just tossed him aside because he was too difficult. I'm glad he had a resurgence with more people being aware of his O&A stuff and Black Philip because if it wasn't for that, a couple specials, bit parts in a couple TV shows and having comics from Boston saying he was savage wouldn't be enough for the everyday person to give a shit.

Even though he only appeared in one episode, I really liked Nick Figaro, Michael's boss at the call center in "Money". He seemed to really care about running his business properly, but did it in a sort of apathetic way, if that makes any sense. He was quick to call out employees who broke the rules, but did it without losing his cool. I still can't figure out whether he was an exceptionally good boss or a really poor one.

I didn't think the Cameraman was a bad or odd addition. The office is one of very few shows where the camera work itself has personality and several jokes throughout the series are motivated or punctuated by nothing more than a camera move or zoom. Some of the funniest or saddest moments were punctuated by the camera choosing to focus on someone in the background, or refusing to break the scene... etc. The only other show I can think of right now with funny camera work is maybe What We Do in the Shadows, the movie and the show both. I'm sure I could think of more if I wasn't super tired. Anyway... good inclusion.

She didn't have much patience when the staff kept going to her with their squabbles but she her heart to heart with michael was so sweet as was her instruction to give dwight an interview despite the fact he had fired a gun in the office

I loved the Charles Minor storyline. Because it showed that no matter how big and bad he was, and no matter how much experience he had in "business." He was taken down by a trio of Michael, Pam and Ryan because he knew nothing about what made Dunder Mifflin successful. Minor never did any work himself, he just told others what to do and thats why he failed.

As much as I dislike Robert California, that was an amazing gag. (I really wish the "proposed threesome with Jim and Pam" storyline was canon instead of deleted scenes. It would have made his departure so much better.)

The one i would disagree with though is Todd packer. Like his counterpart, finchy, in the British version, he is never humanised. He is just there as a marker to show how much michael has grown by outgrowing him. Roy, on the other hand is shown to grow as a character unlike Lee (Roy's equivalent in the British version). I think its a shame that Todd packer was not humanised in the same way Roy was. We even see him walk in to hear pam say what an awful person he is. Never thought I'd feel sorry for packer but that scene did it for me.

I totally agree about Charles Minor! I loved him, he’s very underrated. And I agree about David Wallace, he’s one of my favorite characters. I also totally agree about Lonnie, I wish he was in it more, he was hilarious, and I had no idea his actor died. That’s so sad! :( Also I DISAGREE about Nate.. he is one of my least favorite characters in the show, I find him very annoying. Thanks for the video! I still don't recall who nate is. Left no impression on me whatsoever. Loved Robert california. Took me a while to realise it was James spader. Lol 30 years since I last saw him. The baby story is very much on the lines of Irish comedian dave Allen who would tell scary stories. Still never figured out why he didn't want his wife working at the company? Heard some gossip about James spader not really fitting with the cast and not being good at improv but as far as I was concerned he was a good addition to the cast. My other supporting faves were also on this list - David Wallace (definitely the most patient and understanding character ever). Thats what made him so likeable. The scenes where he's hanging out with his son also showed us another side to his character. Third is of course mose and that same loveable eccentricity can be seen in michael schurs other creation - the good place. I often wonder though, with dwight and mose how much was mocking of such characters? In the UK there was a similar mocking feel about rural characters (the league of gentleman and withnall & i) just because they were rural and so, naturally, a bit "weird". Just one question - why no jo? Kathy bates was excellent as the no nonsense straight talking southern boss

The actor who played Nate got his break after making up a character named Kenny Strauss who was a yo yo master/environmentalist and went onto local morning news channels in Wisconsin and throughout the Midwest. Look up K-Strass Super Compilation on KZbin, one of the funniest videos ever.

Devon: Genius character in that he appeared to be the mystery character who suddenly exists so when Michael fired him we wouldn't lose an actual one... only to realize while watching earlier shows that he was there the whole time. Robert California: He was a brilliant character in the episode that introduced him. I was seriously rooting for him to be the choice for new boss (even better getting the higher position!) when that first aired. He was a genius con man who really got into peoples' heads, even the cameraman/audience. Lots of potential there. Except... the show didn't seem to know what to do with him after that. His character took turns that were all over the place, never revisiting that potential he had - except in his last appearance which was satisfying. If only the middle parts added up.

I didn't mind that RC was all over the place. His first appearance gave the impression that he was a slick talking con man who could probably run the company into the ground for his own personal gain, but he later on showed both real competence as an effective manager and weaknesses (namely, his relationship failures, first with his wife and then with Nellie) getting the best of him.

Robert California always bugged me. Not sure what it was about the character. Maybe that was the point. I just don’t like many of the episodes where he plays a big part. Bob Vance probably should be on this list. Another one on my list would be Vikram. I would have probably gotten rid of cameraman (who admittedly deserves an honorable mention) and the Patrice O’Neal character. I would move Vikram into 10th spot and Bob Vance into probably 7th or 8th. You could also make the argument for their time on the show, Robert California and Karen Filllipelli were main characters.

I honestly love and hate different characters with each watch.. I recently watched the show again and my new hated character is Erin and my new favorite supporting character would have to be Creed. I have just been laughing every time he comes on camera. Even if he doesn't say anything.. There is a scene where is puking and he's just slurping noodles. Too good

I never understood why Jim's tux was such a big deal. All he had to say was "I am going to a function later and had to dress appropriately." That or just downplay it. This felt off for Jim, a guy who usually is known for his resourceful nature.

I loved Mose and I thought David was excellent. I always liked Karen but, I also knew why her character was there and that it was much better to keep Pam and Jim from getting together way too soon. Actually I would have liked it if they did not get together for another season or so. I agree with your list. Maybe not in the same order but, I agree. Even Todd Packer - who I hated. Just hated. But, I knew he was important to the character of Michael and his behavior
