I was a Volvo tech until just after CMA XC40 came out. We still saw a pretty even mix of P1, P2, P3 and SPA. We start salivating when P2 comes in! Lots of gravy on those! I fix Ford now but I miss Volvo. It’s nice memories when i work on my S40.

I used a GROM Audio kit in my 04 XC90. Adds Bluetooth, USB, and aux via the CD players optical sensor. Makes a little *snap* noise when connecting but otherwise works better than my buddys new Ford Raptor 😁
@VanillaLibrarian
@VanillaLibrarian 2 ай бұрын
Yep! There's the GROM MST4 and the Mr12Volt P600 which will work on a lot of P1s, but they are quite expensive, and they don't work on some of the 2004 models that don't have a CD changer. However, there is another beautiful piece of kit that should (almost?) always work... The bluetooth and aux modules sold by JustTech on Tindie. They are installed inside of the radio itself (a little bit of technical confidence but no soldering required), and they hijack the signal going from the disc reader to the radio motherboard. Two drawbacks: they do not display the track name on the infotainment display, and although the bluetooth module supports steering wheel controls in theory, the add-on board required for that is perpetually out of stock. However, an FM transmitter doesn't have those features either, and the sound quality is a MAJOR improvement. I have one of the earliest 2004 V50s that I considered a total loss when it comes to modern audio compatability, and this module is an absolute blessing.

I can relate to the absolute idiocy of gripe #2... My S40 is currently in the shop for a replacement long block after I seized my original motor from coolant loss. Not only was there no warning for the low level, the temp gauge did not warn me of an overheating condition! I don't understand this at all.

The only good thing with having a 1.6D Drive E except for the great fuel economy, is that the Fuel filter is super easy to get to and located in the engine bay, this is a good thing as fuel filters on diesels need to be replaced more often then fuel filters on petrol powered cars. The oil filter how ever is a b*tch to get to as you have to remove the intake hose between the air box and turbo to get to it (also on the Peugeot engine the intake and exhaust sides are flipped compared to the Ford and Volvo engines) you have to put in the new oil filter perfectly or the oil filter cap won’t go on right and you will have a nice engine oil fountain under your hood. Changing the cabin filter isn’t that hard if you changed a couple of them, i was able to do it for my first time on a P1 with out any significant changes, keep in mind the fact the i have worked as an apprentice at a Volvo and Renault Authorized dealer/shop. So i have changed a lot of Y2/P3 and SPA cabin filters. Renault are much worse when it comes to changing cabin filters believe me.

Indeed the oil filter placement is the most stupid thing i have ever seen, and has annoyed me for as long as I have had my C30 R-design 1.6d. But at least the engine comes to life with a remap as it pushes around 140hp and it actually pulls all the way to redline at 4500, which most diesels don't do.

As a "petrol head" I would say that coolant is as with oil, any car owner should naturally check the coolant level of their car, but the wiper fluid is almost more important because it can seriously affect the view if you need to clean the window, so that's a security question.

Getting non-halogen bulbs to work reliably in headlights. Too hit or miss whether they just work like mine did, or keep breaking like in Jame's car. Also whoever decided to put the shroud over the drivers side axle so you need to get it onto a lift to get proper leverage to pop it out needs to try to pull an axle while the car is on the ground.

2005 V50 with 247K -- I'm surprised no one has mentioned the front sway bar bushings. Volvo makes it impossible to get at them without dropping the sub-frame. Mine have been clunking badly but it costs more than $1,000 to replace a $5 part. I'll just continue to live with it. On the positive side, I drive salt covered roads 5 months of the year and there is no sign of body rust. Volvo does (or at least did) a great paint job. I've replaced all other front suspension parts and they're fairly easy to do.

If it’s not an archaic vehicle made by the big 3, then parts have to be shipped in from all over the US, Poland, Switzerland, Lithuania, etc. Very time consuming when you’re trying to perform repairs or preventative maintenance on these vehicles.

I haven't done the transmission flush yet because I don't know how to obtain or what Vida is really like, but I think it does not matter much since my S40 and C30 don't have more than 85,000 miles. Btw, I am really very grateful for your attention.

I bought this s40 totaled in 2008 with 35k on it. When I started to put it back together I found that even the steering column is serialized to the car. The sunroof drains are junk. The cem has always been a pain. Left side of car doesn't unlock randomly. I gave it to my daughter and she replaced a dead battery while the key was locked in and probably on. Now there is a whine inside of the intake and nothing else. Not sure if the cem or ecu is at fault. My scantool gets no connection. I'm betting that cloning either one requires Vida software and an interface that I don't own. This car may be headed to the scrap yard.

Unable to adjust the rear wheel cambers. They are stationary and flared out which causes inner wear over time. After a few tire rotations from front to back vice/versa, it completely alters the steering and ended up turning more than ever with very little axis, feels sort of like 4-wheel steering!

So, i am a relatively new owner of an 04 S40 with the high-performance audio pack. That one 30€ Bluetooth adapter does NOT work because of the trunk-mounted Amp. There is no AUX-in offered by volvo for that specific model. Now from what i can tell, there are 2 options: Either get an Android-based Navigation replacement, although i havent found ANYONE that used those in europe so far so thats a little off-putting, or the bluepower unit, which is just expensive. Do you have any other ideas?

Mr12Volt makes Bluetooth adapter that works well. Tested the Grom unit initially and was not impressed with the Bluetooth audio quality. The Mr12Volt does require removing the GPS from the audio loop of the car is equipped with it. At least that’s what I had to do on my 2006 V50 with premium audio/GPS to get it to work consistently.

@@daverichards1832 I unfortunately learned that my S40 was in a relatively severe side-impact before and is most likely a write-off because it most likely wont pass the next inspection... Gonna try to fix her, if it doesnt work in a reasonable way, im getting a facelift T5 next. and at that point, the cheap bluetooth adapter is gonna be an option. Thanks for the tip tho, if i can keep her, ill look into that.

The B-pillar / door length issue comes with a car being 2 or 3 door version. Any car that needs rear passengers to use the front door needs the longer door, it's that simple. Nothing to do with Volvo design.

You can do the software reset with Vida. These AW55 transmissions are fairly bulletproof and can handle some serious power. I've even seen these transmissions last upwards of 250k miles without ever having the fluid flushed, though this is not advisable.

All P1 Volvos are the same (C30, S40, V50, C70), so a lot of my content could be considered a review of these vehicles. Be certain to reference this video when shopping for a P1: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGLdf2CDl8xgp5o&ab_channel=MyNameIdeasWereTaken No difference between pre/post facelift other than redesigned lights, bumpers, and tunnel consoles. The facelift did have the R-design trim option, which was just a cosmetic package with a slight quicker steering rack. But the steering rack improvements are only truly noticeable in back to back comparisons. There were a few infotainment benefits to the later model year cars. I personally prefer the styling of the pre facelift for all P1 models. But I suggest shopping based on the options that you want and the condition of the car, regardless of the model year.

@@MyNameIdeasWereTaken Thanks man, I’d keep these at the back of my mind while checking reviews. Both the S40 & S60 are top of of preference list, not sure how suave & sharp the R-trim is compared to ///M or AMG from the German brands, so I think I’d just stick to the regular variant of these cars.

A coolant level sensor is absolutely important. I don't care if you inspect the coolant level before every drive, if something happens and you lose coolant during your drive, you risk overheating the engine and immediately warping the head.

@MyNameIdeasWereTaken
@MyNameIdeasWereTaken 3 жыл бұрын
Any mechanical reason why you chose to replace the transmission? Difficulty engaging gear? Grinding noises? It could simply be low fluid. But for a warning message, there must be a stored fault code as well. Did you clear any codes and reflash the ECU for the new transmission? If not, that could be why the warning has come back. But there may be another sensor or fault that is causing this error.
