Me and my family went on the train there and took a bus tour. It was very long, almost 9 hours, but it was so worth it. We saw grizzlies, antelope, moose, and so much more. Once we got to this big group of cabins we panned for gold and took a flight back in a small Cessna over the glaciers and everything. We were in Alaska for a week and a half and went on a boat tour where we saw orcas and many whales. Such a great place.

Alaska is sooo beautiful! I'm so glad you saw lots of wildlife and I really Denali did it right by having buses instead of letting people drive in. Can you imagine lots of cars on that gravel road with cliffs? On our trip last year, we did Glacier Bay (on a cruise), Keani Fjords (boat tour), Denali (bus tour), and Wrangle-St. Elias (walking tour on the glacier). What a fantastic trip. The Cessna flight you did must have been really beautiful. Alaska was so beautiful we are going back this year! We will do the small plane thing and visit Katmai and Lake Clark this year. We had to get reservations for Katmai (Brooks Falls) hotel January of 2018. It's on a lottery system. Check out the video for each of the parks on this channel!

Good Tips! ! Plan ahead. Dress in layers, bring a jacket. Mosquitoes ( No joke, we called them Moose-quitoes when I lived in Alaska). The shuttle bus stops at bathrooms which are maintained nicely.

At about the 6:00 mark, the little squirrel was an arctic ground squirrel, and the brown and white bird was a ptarmigan (TAR-mih-gun), which change from brown in the summer to pure white in the winter. You kind of explained it, but for those who didn't catch it, the dogs in winter look like the dogs in the Iditarod, in that they pull dogsleds. In Alaska, the mosquito is (only half) jokingly called the Alaska State Bird. Another point related to the National Park people--due to the difficulty and expense getting there, you won't find people whose sole goal is to come, take an iconic picture and leave. The average stay at our national parks is a measly few hours. I have to echo the others below--beautifully done video. Thanks.

Great points. Alaska parks are difficult to get to and expensive. They are all so beautiful, larger than life. They really invite you in and stay a while and truly "commune" with nature. The lack of internet is actually a blessing in most cases.

@@petrushkim8061 They have different charms. If you are not into wildlife as much as our nutty family is, I would say that Iceland should be more appreciated by most "normal" people. The views on Iceland is absolutely eye watering! (Literally at Gullfoss when you walk down to it...) However, Alaska's mountains are magnificent, and as I have mentioned is the wildlife spectacular! We saw close to 10 bears, moose, caribou, dall sheep and golden eagle, to name some. And then, as I mentioned above, the train ride in Alaska was the best trip that I have made! Safe travel!

Thanks a lot!!
@JourneytoAllNationalParks
@JourneytoAllNationalParks 2 жыл бұрын
Denali actually does not have a lot of trails, especially given the park size. They do allow and encourage off-trail hiking for people who are skilled and prepared. While there are a few trails near the visitor center, they were just average. The Savage River Trail is the one we hiked and it was excellent and where many of the pictures from the video was taken. There are also trails at Wonder Lake and Eielson but they are deep into the park and you need to take a shuttle bus. We took the tour bus so there was no time for us to hike there but if you want to hike there, you need to plan so the shuttle bus is still running by the time you finish. As of 2022, due to a landslide, the buses only go to mile 43, which means Wonder Lake and Eielson are not accessible. It's slated to be closed through summer of 2023.

Thanks! Do Alaska mountains remind you of mountains in Nepal? When I visited Rocky Mountain National Park and Mount Rainier National Park, I found a Nepalese restaurant near each park. The owners told me they like to be near mountains in the US because it reminds them of home.

Marina, what’s really amazing is Denali isn’t even the largest national park in Alaska! Wrangell st Elias is over “twice” the size of Denali and even more remote.Imagine that! Research it.😉

Great tips, but what do you suggest as far as booking accommodations? Book them in advanced or book as you go?
@JourneytoAllNationalParks
@JourneytoAllNationalParks Жыл бұрын
Book ahead - accommodations are limited and alternatives are far away. However, with the main park road that's currently closed past mile 43 (in the summer), I don't know what the demand is for the park presently. We booked 6 months ahead, but that was a few years ago.

What are the Temperatures in August there? Is their RV Camping near there and what do we do with our Pets?
@JourneytoAllNationalParks
@JourneytoAllNationalParks 4 жыл бұрын
August is not bad, but Alaska weather is changeable very quickly so dress in layers. There are RV camp grounds nearby. See www.alaska.org/destination/denali-national-park/rv-parks-and-campgrounds Due to wildlife, bringing pets to the park is not a good idea. You may need to leave your pet in the RV.

McKinley Park, AK is a nearby town but a bit further up highway 3 is a cluster of hotels and restaurants just north of the Denali entrance where you will find the accommodations. There are campsites and I think a lodge deep into the park. See www.nps.gov/dena/planyourvisit/lodging.htm

Hi, i don't hike only like to see nature, want to see Anchorage, Seward, Talkeetna and Denali. Can i stay in Anchorage and come back everyday on bus and we have to do reservation in advance or not. Thanks
@JourneytoAllNationalParks
@JourneytoAllNationalParks 4 жыл бұрын
It's 4+ hours from Anchorage to McKinley Park (gateway town to Denali). If you try to do this in one day, you will not do Denali justice. The bus tour inside the park will take at least 4 hours. Look into booking a tour. They will book the hotel. Going to Talkeetna and Denali by train may be a good option. You can go from Anchorage to Seward by bus or train but you need to reserve time to go on the boat tour at Kenai Fjord National Park which is an all day tour. Anchorage to Seward is 2.5 hours and probably possible in one day with the boat tour. For example, www.alaskarailroad.com/travel-planning/day-trips/kenai-fjords-national-park-cruise

Info you need to know. At Denali we title the three types of buses as such: #1. TOUR BUSES = narrated bus trip into the park. #2. TRANSIT BUSES = non-narrorated bus trip into the park. #3. SHUTTLE BUSES = Free frontcountry shuttle only 15 miles. Savage river shuttle is free bus to transport you within the first 15 miles of the park, Ryley Creek shuttle is the first 5 miles within the park. These are frontcountry free shuttles. The TOUR BUS & TRANSIT BUS TAKES YOU INTO THE PARK, EACH HAVING ITS OWN COST. So you know thur difference, as it does confuse guests here in Denali. It's the transit bus that you can hop off to explore within the park from mile post 16 - 92. Thank you

What if you have an off road vehicle?
@SidneyChow
@SidneyChow 5 жыл бұрын
Anthony Murphy past a certain point, no private vehicle is allowed. Busses only. The gravel road is well maintained but narrow in places. Most of the park is a wilderness preserve, which means no motorized vehicles are allowed. If rangers want to do things, like maintain trails or build a small bridge, they have to move the material by hand or they stage the material in the winter with dog sleds and then hike in to do the work. Unlike Canyonlands, for example, I don’t think there are any provisions for off road vehicles.

Yes, you can. People have biked the entire length of the park road. Shuttle buses have racks on the front and you can stash your bike on it (space available) to ride the bus in and bike out.
