Yes, apparently you're not familiar with the history of My Fair Lady. Audrey did do the songs in the movie. However, the studio execs decided they weren't happy with her voice and had it dubbed by Marni Nixon. Audrey didn't find out about it until later. She was very unhappy. There was nothing wrong with her voice. She had sung in previous movies like "Funny Face" and "Breakfast at Tiffanys". Of course, Julie Andrews was unhappy about the movie as well since she starred in the stage version but they didn't even consider her to do the movie.

I am so surprised that Phoneix did not get the Oscar with Reese. People keep complaining about his bad singing voice, but come on, his impression was spot on. He sounded like Johnny Cash to a T. That is my opinion anyways. I was shocked by how well Helena Bontham Carter could sing and now learning this was her first musical, even more astonished of her talent considering the complexity of Sondheim. Wow!

He hasn't sung in a movie (yet), but Jake Gyllenhaal has a fantastic voice. He was cast in "Little Shop of Horrors" at the Public Theater, and with no history of being a trained singer, delivered Broadway-caliber vocals. Then he went on to star in "Sunday in the Park with George." I know he bought the movie rights to "Fun Home," but I don't think they've announced yet if he'll actually be starring in it. I hope so.

Good point. There are some people who can just do it naturally, but they are very, very rare. Your voice is an instrument and you have to learn to use it. Most people can't just sit down at a piano and suddenly play; singing is the same way.

@mervyngreene6687 2 жыл бұрын
I believe that this was one of the most infamous incidents that has fueled the debate over dubbing voices in movies. And, it probably is the reason Julie Andrews won the Academy Award for "Mary Poppins." I think that a more tragic example was Natalie Woods. It has been frequently reported that she truly believed that she could sing. And that she recorded all of Maria's songs during the production of "West Side Story." The legend also claims that she found out that they had used Marnie Nixon's voice at the premier. I believe that she might have lost the Academy Award for what was arguably her best performance -- "Splendor in the Grass." I think that these issues are the best examples of how the stage and film are such different artistic media.

Good choices. Under honorable mentions you have Katherine Hepburn for "My Fair Lady". It is my understanding her voice was dubbed with Julie Andrews voice for that movie.

Wrong Heburn. Its Audrey. and she wasn't dubbed by Julie but Marni Nixon, who also did the singing voice of lead characters for several other musicals. Julie did originate the role but was not asked to have anything to do with the film. She then went to make Mary Poppins.

@@aislingopal7802 Which, admittedly, I am glad she was passed on reprising her role in the film version My Fair Lady if it allowed her to get cast as Mary Poppins. I just can’t imagine any other big name actress at the time as the original Mary Poppins and I don’t think any of them would have been as good as Julie Andrews.

Sorry, but the first place should have gone to Renée Zellweger. I am not a big fan of hers and I was very skeptical about her capacity to play Garland, but she did an amazing job. Most of the others, including Garfield, were creating characters. Zellweger had to actually capture Garland's voice, style and pain. I still don't know how was she able to capture all that. It's almost supernatural stuff.

You lot had missed my number one choice: Emma Watson as Belle in Beauty and the Beast (2017, Disney, Bill Confon, Alan Menken). Yes, in all candour (if a bit after the fact), I have a poignantly sentimental bias (well, it's poignant to me!). Also, I have not seen the other contenders herein. I love this topic, though wistful pangs temper my delight. I wish I could find a good voice coach--I have an extraordinarily wide vocal range!--and an agent for my writing. This would be where I truly would shine. Both would be outstanding!

@@carr0760 Furthermore, she spent months training prior filming way back in 2017 to learn singing lessons for that role and even got mentorship and being coached from Paige O'Hara (the original actress who voiced Belle in the 1991 animated original film) in getting that singing right. That statement of saying that she was being autotuned was preposterous uncalled for, let alone that accusation HAD NO BASIS at all, and holds no water at it.

@@ajpat9620 uh....the autotune is blatantly obvious to anyone with ears. You can actively hear it changing the notes, and creating a robotic sound. It's out of control. I also provided multiple links to video analysis which prove it.
