Robert Downey Jr. has a prolific singing reputation, appearing on soundtracks as far back as the early 90's. As a kid, I knew him as a singer long before his acting career's second wind made him relevant to me as an actor. When his 2004 album dropped, it was a huge deal for a few people I know who were huge fans of his voice. It may be a generational divide, but for a lot of people he's as much a singer as an actor, so it doesn't count. Hugh Laurie began releasing music fairly recently, well-into his mainstream success as an actor. The fact that this list pleasantly surprised me through his inclusion tells me why he's on here; I had no idea he could sing..

Aidith Foray A lot of the cast from Supernatural is musically talented and they regularly show that off at Supernatural conventions, just check out some of the videos from different conventions. I already knew Jensen could sing but the two that suprised me when I went to a convention was Rob Benedict (Chuck the prophet) who fronts a pretty awesome band called Louden Swain and Gil McKinney (Henry Winchester) who has a truly amazing voice but a lot of the cast members get up on stage and sing, Mark Sheppard (Crowley) even plays the drums!

I'd have to agree with this comment. Why leave Hugh Jackman out, but include Anna Kendrick and Oscar Isaac, for example? The reasoning that you've been hearing Jackman crooning for years is, I think, biased. I'm just watching another video of yours where you say that he was largely 'unknown before the superhero film' (X-Men) so I would say he became famous as an actor first. And then next to him, you include Anna Kendrick who started her career in Broadway, and Oscar Isaac who was once a vocalist for a Miami-based band. What?!?

For those of you who like old movies, I’d nominate Marlon Brando for this list. He first came to fame in the early 1950’s as an emoting method actor playing tough guys in movies like Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront, and then he played Sky Masterson in the movie version of Guys and Dolls, he did his own singing, and he was very good at it. I’d also include Jean Simmons, who played Sarah Brown in that same movie, and she did her own singing, too. Both known more for their acting than for singing, and both turned out to be pretty good singers.

Add Kevin Klein, who I saw on Bway in On The Twentieth Century and The Pirates of Penzance. How about Sarah Jessica Parker who started her career as a child actress on Bway in the original cast of Annie and co-starred with her husband Mathew Broderick on Bway in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. I suppose the biggest shock is Jason Alexander - yes George Costanza, who won a Tony for the Musical Jerome Robbins' Broadway (and he can dance) and the horrible TV version of Gypsy opposite Bette Midler. How many people know that Cary Grant started his career doing musical comedy on Bway (watch him sing to Jean Harlow in the film Suzy). The late Bea Arthur was a musical comedy star (Fiddler on the Roof among many other roles) before she was Maude and a Golden Girl. Tom Bosley, Rich Cunningham's father in Happy Days had a very long career as a Bway Musical Comedy performer before becoming a TV star.

Ignatz Mouse But Jerry Orbach was KNOWN for his voice. He was a Broadway actor - Chicago [Billy Flynt], 42nd St., Guys an Dolls (I think), etc. - and afterwards became an actor. This video was showcasing people who basically did things the opposite way and/or like High Laurie, from the UK, was known first, in the US, for his acting, and then later for his singing. That is to say, he sang and danced first, just not in the United States. Albeit, if people didn’t know about that, it would be surprising in this day and age of the internet. But anyway. Older people knew Jerry Orbach first as a singer, second as an actor. The same w’ Jesse L. Martin, who was known first as a famous singer, and then became an actor on the same show. It’s just that he’s closer in age and time to the now, so it’s not as surprising re his personal accomplishments. It’s just bc Jerry Orbach was older that ppl may have thought of him first as an actor instead of visa versa. (I mean, I only learned later that Jerry Orbach had been big in B’way - I didn’t know originally; but to be fair, that was his bailiwick until he started acting. ) I feel like RDJ should be on this list but I’m not sure which arena he shined in first - acting or singing - or both. Bc he was amazing in all but I’m not clear about which came first. I DO have this definite feel he should be on this list regardless bc he was totally awesome but not “known” in the same manner as actual Broadway singers. A shocking number of Avengers are actually good/great singers which I found surprising when I first found out just bc - what are the odds? - but anyway. I would have to erase my reply to find out when this video was made but apparently before Kevin Spacey was found guilty of molesting young boys bc they generally take out actors who have that type of resume (even while musically accurate) so as to not look like they are promoting sex predators on their site. It doesn’t erase their good work, but I generally stop watching what they’ve done. Like w Woody Allen and Mel Gibson, etc. [ive gone completely off-topic.]
